Review: August 8, 2017Completion: July 6, 2017

We had a little problem getting the materials delivered, and getting the scheduling figured out. We live in a rural location and the trucker that brought the materials didn't have a truck that was designed or authorized to go on the gravel road. we figured it out, but somewhere along the line, someone missed that detail. That could have delayed the project several days. Some of the roofing materials weren't installed as accurately as they should have been for roofing. The aluminum plates needed to be done more accurately, but they did come back and replace them, so we're good.

Review: August 4, 2017

They were excellent but the price was highly non-competitive by double. The gentleman made an excellent presentation. My architect and I were extremely impressed. If they were a few thousand dollars less than I would have gone with them.

They could improve the clean-up by the crew. The scheduler and installation manager need to be on the same page. I am happy overall.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chimacum

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Chimacum, Washington. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Chimacum.

Does a metal roof handle Chimacum's snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's smooth surface sheds snow and ice far better than asphalt, and it won't crack or curl during Chimacum's typical 14 freeze-thaw days per year. The four-way interlocking panels create a unified structure that flexes safely as temperatures swing; unlike wood shake or concrete tile, aluminum has no grain to split and no porosity to absorb moisture. With about 33 cm of annual snow and temperatures hovering around 10°C, your roof stays dry underneath while the surface self-clears. Optional snow guards can be added if you prefer controlled runoff.

Will heavy rain cause leaks in a metal roof?

Metal roofs are among the most water-resistant options available. Chimacum receives roughly 1078 mm of rain annually, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap continuously—water has nowhere to go but down and off. The sealed overlap design, combined with proper underlayment and our installer's flashing techniques, means rain runs off the moment it lands. Unlike asphalt shingles, which can develop splits that trap water, or wood shake, which swells and warps, aluminum panels stay dimensionally stable through every wet season. Leaks occur only if installation is faulty, so working with a certified local installer is your guarantee.

Can Chimacum's wind gusts damage a metal roof?

No. Chimacum sees typical daily winds around 19 km/h with gusts up to 138 km/h, and Interlock roofs are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors on all sides, creating a structural net that won't blow apart or lift. By contrast, asphalt shingles can tear at the nail line, and loose shingles invite wind underneath. The UL testing behind metal roofs includes adhesion and lift testing far beyond what Chimacum's windiest days demand, so your roof stays secure through Pacific Northwest gusts.

Do I need to reinforce my home's frame for a metal roof?

Not at all—and that's a major advantage here. An Interlock Slate or Shingle roof weighs just 0.41 to 0.58 pounds per square foot, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Your existing roof framing can support it without modification, and in many cases you can install a metal roof directly over your current asphalt shingles, avoiding tear-off costs and waste. Chimacum homes built to standard load codes handle metal easily. Compare that to slate or clay tile, which demand engineered beams and bracing, and you see why aluminum lets you upgrade to a premium look without a contractor rewiring your home's skeleton.

Will a metal roof rust in Chimacum's wet, salty climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron, and it's the iron in steel that corrodes. Instead, aluminum develops a transparent oxide layer the moment it's exposed to air—and this layer heals itself when scratched or damaged. Chimacum's salt-air and wet climate, combined with 14 freeze-thaw cycles per year, would devastate uncoated steel, but aluminum thrives. On top of that, Interlock panels have a Alunar® PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) applied to both sides, giving extra defense in coastal and damp regions. Your roof will never rust, rot, or need rust treatment—a promise steel roofing simply cannot make.

What happens if hail damages my metal roof?

Interlock roofs carry the highest hail rating available: UL 2218 Class 4, which means they withstand 1.5-inch hailstones without perforation. The warranty covers hail damage, so if a storm hits, you're protected. Chimacum's average climate doesn't favor severe hail, but springtime Pacific Northwest storms can surprise. Because metal roofing performs so well in impact tests, many insurance companies recognize it as damage-resistant and offer discounts—something they rarely do for asphalt. Check with your insurer; a metal roof can sometimes pay for itself partly through lower premiums, especially over a 30, 50, or 70-year lifespan. It's peace of mind backed by physics, not luck.

Does metal roofing help with heating and cooling costs?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they reflect heat that dark asphalt absorbs and radiates into your attic. In Chimacum's mild 10.3°C climate with 3042 annual sunshine hours, a reflective roof reduces cooling load in summer and works alongside your insulation year-round. The metal itself conducts heat evenly, preventing hot spots that age roofing faster. Over decades, lower HVAC cycling saves energy and extends your system's life. It's not a substitute for insulation, but it's a measurable efficiency gain—especially when your roof lasts 50+ years instead of 15, so you're not re-roofing and re-insulating every generation.

How much upkeep does a metal roof really need?

Almost none. Unlike asphalt shingles, which need inspection and patching every 3-5 years, or wood shake, which requires regular treatment against rot and splitting, Interlock aluminum panels don't degrade or invite maintenance. Chimacum's 1078 mm annual rain and 14 freeze-thaw days won't crack, curl, or separate the roof. Simply keep gutters clear and brush off debris after storms—that's it. The coating is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. No algae grows on aluminum, no wood fibers splinter, no tar cracks in freeze-thaw cycles. Most owners report doing nothing for decades except the occasional visual check. That's why it's the last roof you buy: it doesn't demand your attention or your wallet for repairs.

What's the real warranty on an Interlock metal roof?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and impact-resistance loss—basically everything that fails on other roofs over Chimacum's 14 freeze-thaw days and 1078 mm rain. If you sell, your buyer inherits a 50-year transferable coverage, which means two generations can live under a roof knowing it's genuinely protected. No other roofing material offers non-prorated lifetime coverage; asphalt is 20-25 years prorated, wood shake 15-25 years with conditions, and tile carries no rust or rot clause. The coating itself is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking. This is the peace of mind that comes with a product made in Delta, BC since 1998 and installed from coast to Antarctic research stations.

How long does installation take and can you install over my old roof?

Installation timing depends on roof size and weather, but most Chimacum homes take 2-5 days with Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc., our regional installer since 1997. Yes, you can install directly over most existing asphalt roofs—no tear-off needed. Because Interlock panels weigh just 0.41-0.58 lb/sq ft, you avoid the debris removal, labor, and landfill costs of stripping old shingles. The existing roof becomes your base, and new flashing and underlayment seal everything. Your home stays protected during installation. The local team knows Chimacum's weather patterns, codes (ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance), and can time work around the region's typical rainfall. Right now, you can qualify for no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or get 10% off, making the upgrade affordable.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Chimacum’s climate?

Yes. Chimacum averages about 33 cm of snow, 1078 mm of rain, roughly 14 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 138 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
