Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Dover

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Dover often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Dover may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

In Dover a quality metal roof typically lasts 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles usually last 15–25 years depending on quality and maintenance. Dover’s climate—about 45–47 in. of annual precipitation and roughly 50–53 in. of snow—means significant snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofing materials and flashing. Being on New Hampshire’s Seacoast also brings higher coastal moisture and salt air exposure that can accelerate corrosion on some metals and roofing components. Homeowners in Dover often choose durable systems—standing seam metal, heavy underlayment, reinforced snow guards—because they resist snow weight, ice dams, wind and moisture better than asphalt. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminum and include a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection in these local conditions.
Metal roofs in Dover generally cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but price varies with roof size, pitch, complexity (hips, valleys), tear-off, flashing, skylights, and local labor rates. Durable metal systems can lower lifetime repair and replacement costs. Dover has cold, snowy winters with an extended snowy season and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofing materials, increasing value for durable metal options. Annual precipitation and coastal-influenced humidity can also accelerate corrosion and require quality coatings and flashing details. Expect local construction factors (permit requirements, accessibility, disposal) to affect final bids. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value—higher initial cost for metal often pays back in fewer repairs and longer service life. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value rather than competing as a low-cost roofing option.
Metal vs asphalt in Dover depends on priorities. Metal roofs typically last 40–70+ years versus 15–30 years for asphalt shingles, so metal wins lifespan and long-term value for owners planning to keep a home long-term. Maintenance: asphalt needs more frequent inspections, shingle replacement, and flashing repair; metal needs occasional fastener and finish checks. Durability: metal resists wind, sheds heavy New England snow and ice better, and tolerates freeze–thaw cycling that accelerates shingle wear—important given Dover’s snowy winters and winter thaw periods. Long-term value favors metal for fewer replacements and better protection in snow/ice conditions, though upfront cost is higher. Homeowners who prioritize durability and long-term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals because interlocking panels resist snow/ice intrusion, improve wind performance, and provide lasting architectural curb appeal.
Many people in Dover, NH think metal roofs are noisy when it rains, but that’s a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking and underlayment do not sound like barn roofs. Sound depends on the roof assembly: insulation, attic air space, underlayment, and sheathing greatly reduce impact noise. Quality installation—proper fastening, seams, and insulation—also matters. When installed as a complete system, metal roofing is typically similar in sound to asphalt shingles or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed and installed as complete residential roofing systems, including decking and underlayment, to minimize noise and provide long-lasting performance.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Dover, NH. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, reducing summer heat gain and cooling loads; high‑solar‑reflective finishes further lower roof surface temperatures. Overall energy performance depends on the full roof assembly: underlayment, insulation levels, airtightness and attic ventilation control heat flow in winter and summer. Dover’s climate—cold winters and warm, humid summers—means reflective metal helps cooling while proper insulation and ventilation are critical for winter comfort and to prevent ice dams. Homeowners researching roof replacement focus on energy efficiency to lower heating and cooling costs, improve year‑round comfort, meet local codes and incentives, and increase resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
In Dover, NH, roofs face nor’easters, heavy snow and ice, coastal storm-driven wind, periods of heavy rain, and occasional hail. Local hail maps note storm hail and wind gusts near 60 mph at times, which can damage shingles and soffits. Metal roofing performs well: it sheds snow/ice, resists water intrusion, and when specified for impact and rated for uplift can withstand hail and high winds. Actual performance depends on system design (profiles, underlayment, attachment), installation quality, and material durability/thickness. Homeowners consider weather resilience to protect the structure, reduce long‑term repair costs, minimize downtime, and help with insurance and resale value. Selecting thicker gauges, impact‑rated panels, quality coatings, and proper underlayment improves hail resistance and corrosion protection. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance.
Corrosion and rust resistance are key for metal roofing in Dover, NH. Metal roofing performance depends on the base metal—steel, zinc, copper, and aluminum each behave differently. Some materials (galvanized or zinc‑coated steel, copper, aluminum) are naturally more corrosion‑resistant; aluminum in particular performs well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide layer and resists saltwater damage. Homeowners should consider corrosion resistance to avoid premature deterioration, leaks, higher maintenance, and costly replacement. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection and long‑term durability against the region’s moisture and salt exposure.
Metal roofing in Dover, New Hampshire is generally a low‑maintenance choice thanks to durable materials and long service life. That said, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should perform periodic inspections—after storms and at least once or twice a year—to spot loose fasteners, damaged panels, or compromised coatings. Remove leaves, branches, and roof debris; keep gutters clear to prevent water backup. Check flashing, seals, vents, chimneys, skylights, and other penetrations for gaps or corrosion and reseal or tighten as needed. Seasonal debris, heavy snow, ice dams, or high winds can affect performance, so address issues promptly. Overall, a properly installed metal roof offers strong, low‑maintenance protection for Dover homes.
In Dover, NH, metal roofing can increase home value because buyers often prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs that withstand New England weather. Premium materials improve curb appeal and can make a property stand out in local markets. A long lifespan reduces near‑term replacement concerns, boosting buyer confidence and perceived resale value. Architectural style matters within Dover neighborhoods—matching the home’s character preserves appeal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles to suit local styles, including slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam, and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper. For buyers in Dover, a well‑selected metal roof can be both an aesthetic upgrade and a practical investment that supports higher offers and quicker sales.
Yes—Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing – New England. In Dover, cold, snowy winters with heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, plus coastal-influenced humidity, can affect roof longevity, so roof lifespan is important when adding PV panels. Homeowners should plan for future solar when replacing a roof because long-lasting materials reduce the need to remove and remount panels; Interlock systems are solar-compatible and engineered to support solar mounting solutions with professional brackets. When comparing materials locally, long-life metal roofing is often preferred for lower lifecycle cost and better performance under Dover’s snow and moisture conditions.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

Review: April 24, 2026

Completion: November 9, 2017

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Portland, OR Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Safety Anchors Installed (2019)

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Metal Shingle Roof Review in New Bedford, MA — Interlock (Installed 2005)

Review: March 10, 2026

Completion: February 5, 2005

We had our whole house done by Interlock in 2005, we've only had one issue (wind damage) and they came out the next day to repair the damage. At the time we left a small overhang undone with plans of removing it, however our plans changed and the roof had deteriorated with the passing of time. I called and they were very receptive to coming out to inspect and then replace. The work was done quickly, on time and to my complete satisfaction. I highly recommend Interlock, you wont be sorry!

We had our Interlock Metal Roof installed in 2011 and recently experienced some damage to the flashing. I called and spoke with Cheri, the Office and Service Department Administrator, who promptly scheduled Brad to assess the issue at the next available time. Despite one of the coldest winter days, Brad repaired the flashing efficiently and at no charge. I may be biased, but every time I pull into our driveway, I truly believe we have the best roof on our street. I would highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd.

Beaverton, OR Aluminum Shingles Repair Review — Gutter Pulled Corner Flashing, Fast Response

Review: January 20, 2026

Completion: August 10, 2001

Fast response and excellent work. The technician drop by within couple of days, found the cause, and provided quote. The price was reasonable for the work scope. They were able to secure the work slot as soon as the raining season was over and kept me informed on the schedule. In addition, they inspected remaining roof as well. Note: the leak was due to gutter pulling the corner flashing. The 10+ year Interlock roof tile remained good.

Toronto, ON Metal Roof Review: Excellent Service & Solar Vent (2023)

Review: December 17, 2025

Completion: November 29, 2023

Had a metal roof installed a couple of years ago and love it. Had some issues lately and Ken (service technician and great guy) came to see the problem. He checked the roof and found no issues there. He then asked if he could go into the attic to have a look. When in the attic he noticed a few things including some missing insulation over the area that was having the issue. He re-spread the insulation and did a few other things as well which he thinks may resolve the problem. They also suggested adding a solar vent to move more air in the attic and came the next day to install it. Hopefully the problem is now resolved and I know that the roof is secure and also know that should I need more service they will promptly return. If considering a metal roof, contract these good folks!

Oakville, ON Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock Aluminum PVDF (2024)

Review: December 16, 2025

Completion: September 11, 2024

I have a new roof installed by Interlock and very pleased with the professionalism and aesthetics. My builder roof lasted 12 years and I needed something more durable. I spent months talking to steel roof installers and the thing that bothered me most, is whether the company will be around long enough to support warranty issues. The coatings were also prone to fading and I was looking for a worry free product.

My research led me to select aluminum roofing with PVDF coating for durability and resistance to Color fade. The lifetime transferable warranty and fact that Interlock has been in business for over 40 years led me to contact the company.

Interlock staff are courteous and Bruce gave a very fair price with a no pressure quote. My roof has some features that could affect aesthetics and Bruce arranged for special considerations at those locations. The installers were very courteous, and took the time necessary to do a great installation. They respected my views as a home owner and provided regular updates on progress and solutions. The installers cleaned up debris at the end of each day and coordinated with my neighbours to minimize impact from the roofing job. When rain was in the forecast the crew worked tirelessly to complete roofing sections that would be vulnerable to rainfall.

Overall I am pleased with everyone’s efforts and now hope the roof will be durable for many years.
