Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Salem

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Salem often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Salem may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Salem commonly last at least 50–75+ years; asphalt shingles typically last 20–30 years depending on quality and maintenance. Salem has cold, snowy winters (about 59 in. of snow annually) and roughly 47 in. of precipitation, so heavy snow loads and repeated freeze–thaw cycles increase stress on roofing materials and flashing, while rain and humidity raise corrosion risk if finishes are inadequate. Those local conditions explain why homeowners choose durable systems: metal sheds snow and ice, resists wind and occasional hail, and requires less frequent replacement than asphalt—making it more cost‑effective over time. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminum and include a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
Metal roofs in Salem typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but many homeowners value their longer lifespan and lower lifetime maintenance. Actual price depends on roof size, pitch, complexity (changes in slope, valleys, skylights), tear-off and flashing needs, and local labor and permitting. In Salem, significant winter snowfall (about 59 in/year) and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that promote ice dams and added load are important considerations for material and installation details. Durable metal systems can reduce future repair and replacement costs by resisting snow, ice and thermal stress. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasizes long-term ownership value—durability, reduced maintenance and energy performance—rather than competing as a low-cost option.
Short answer: metal roofing can be worth it in Salem, but it depends on priorities. Salem averages roughly 47 in of precipitation and about 59 in of snow annually, with regular freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofs. Lifespan: metal 40–70+ years vs asphalt shingles 15–25 years. Maintenance: metal needs minimal upkeep; asphalt needs periodic shingle replacement and more inspections after heavy snow/ice. Durability: metal resists snow loads, freeze–thaw damage, and wind better; asphalt is more vulnerable to granule loss, ice-damming effects, and accelerated wear in snowy, wet climates. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower life‑cycle costs and often higher resale value; asphalt is cheaper initially but may require replacement sooner. Homeowners prioritizing durability and long-term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals in Salem because interlocking panels shed snow, resist uplift and freeze–thaw stress, and offer lasting architectural curb appeal.
Short answer: No — the “metal roofs are noisy” idea is a common myth. In Salem, with about 47 in. of rain and roughly 59 in. of snow yearly, freeze–thaw cycles and heavy snow loads influence durability more than acoustics. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking (not open purlins) don’t sound like barn roofs. Sound is affected by underlayment, insulation, attic volume and ceiling finish, and proper fastening and flashing—so installation quality matters. Properly installed metal roofs typically sound similar to architectural shingles or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Salem, NH. Metal roofing reflects sunlight to reduce summer heat gain and cooling loads, and its durability helps with snow shedding during snowy, freeze–thaw‑prone winters in this area. Overall energy performance depends on the complete roof assembly: quality underlayment, high‑R insulation, and balanced attic ventilation control winter heat loss and help prevent ice dams. In Salem, the clearest benefits are summer cooling from reflective coatings and reliable thermal performance when paired with proper insulation; winters require attention to R‑value and ventilation. Homeowners compare materials mainly for lifecycle energy savings, year‑round comfort, and lower utility costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Metal roofing performs very well for Salem homeowners when built for local conditions. Salem experiences cold, snowy winters with regular freeze–thaw cycles that stress shingles and fasteners, and seasonal heavy snowfall that increases roof loads. It also sees gusty winds and storm systems that can drive rain and ice under poorly detailed edges and penetrations. Metal roofs shed snow, resist rot and freeze–thaw damage, and—when specified and installed correctly—offer strong wind and hail resistance. Performance, however, depends on roofing system design (pitch, underlayment, attachment), quality installation, and the metal’s gauge and finish. Homeowners compare materials primarily for longevity, leak resistance, and weather resilience; metal’s durability and low maintenance are compelling in Salem’s climate. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance when designed and installed to local codes.
Q: How resistant is metal roofing to corrosion in Salem, NH? A: Metal roofing performance depends on the type of metal—aluminum, stainless steel, zinc and properly coated steels resist corrosion far better than bare carbon steel. Salem’s snowy, wet winters and frequent freeze–thaw cycles (about 59 in. average snowfall and roughly 43 in. annual precipitation) increase moisture exposure and salt contact, so corrosion resistance matters. Aluminum performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer and won’t rust. Homeowners should prioritize corrosion resistance to maximize lifespan, minimize maintenance and avoid leaks or staining. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Salem experiences cold, snowy winters with regular freeze–thaw cycles and moderate annual precipitation (roughly 47 in rain and about 59 in snow), which influence roof wear and ice-dam risk. Metal roofing is generally low maintenance and highly durable in these conditions, but not maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect roofs seasonally and after storms, clearing debris, checking gutters, flashings, and penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights). Look for loose fasteners, paint wear, and gutter blockages that promote ice dams. Strong winds, heavy snow, or tree debris after storms can increase maintenance needs. Compared to other materials, metal offers excellent longevity and resistance to snow, ice and moisture when properly maintained.
In Salem, NH, heavy winter snowfall (roughly 50–60 inches annually) and frequent freeze–thaw cycles increase risks like roof snow loads, ice dams, and accelerated shingle wear, so choose materials that resist those stresses. Yes—metal roofing can increase home value here. Buyers value durable, low‑maintenance roofs; premium materials boost curb appeal; and a long metal roof lifespan gives buyers confidence. Architectural style matters by neighborhood, so match the roof profile to local homes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer slate, cedar-shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing-seam profiles in heavy-gauge aluminum and solid copper, giving both performance and style choices that appeal to buyers in Salem.
As a Salem homeowner comparing roofing materials, note Salem sees heavy snowfall, frequent freeze–thaw cycles and seasonal wind and rain that stress roofing systems. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installation with the installation of custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing – New England. Because solar panels add weight and are long‑term fixtures, roof lifespan matters—choose a roof that won’t need replacement shortly after PV installation. If you plan to go solar later, consider replacing your roof first with a long‑lasting material: Interlock’s metal systems are solar‑compatible and designed to support solar mounting solutions. That minimizes rework and protects both the roof and photovoltaic investment.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

Review: April 24, 2026

Completion: November 9, 2017

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Metal Shingle Roof Review in New Bedford, MA — Interlock (Installed 2005)

Review: March 10, 2026

Completion: February 5, 2005

We had our whole house done by Interlock in 2005, we've only had one issue (wind damage) and they came out the next day to repair the damage. At the time we left a small overhang undone with plans of removing it, however our plans changed and the roof had deteriorated with the passing of time. I called and they were very receptive to coming out to inspect and then replace. The work was done quickly, on time and to my complete satisfaction. I highly recommend Interlock, you wont be sorry!

Interlock Metal Roofing Review — Kitchener, ON (Installed 2011)

Review: January 29, 2026

Completion: July 8, 2011

We had our Interlock Metal Roof installed in 2011 and recently experienced some damage to the flashing. I called and spoke with Cheri, the Office and Service Department Administrator, who promptly scheduled Brad to assess the issue at the next available time. Despite one of the coldest winter days, Brad repaired the flashing efficiently and at no charge. I may be biased, but every time I pull into our driveway, I truly believe we have the best roof on our street. I would highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd.

Beaverton, OR Aluminum Shingles Repair Review — Gutter Pulled Corner Flashing, Fast Response

Review: January 20, 2026

Completion: August 10, 2001

Fast response and excellent work. The technician drop by within couple of days, found the cause, and provided quote. The price was reasonable for the work scope. They were able to secure the work slot as soon as the raining season was over and kept me informed on the schedule. In addition, they inspected remaining roof as well. Note: the leak was due to gutter pulling the corner flashing. The 10+ year Interlock roof tile remained good.

Toronto, ON Metal Roof Review: Excellent Service & Solar Vent (2023)

Review: December 17, 2025

Completion: November 29, 2023

Had a metal roof installed a couple of years ago and love it. Had some issues lately and Ken (service technician and great guy) came to see the problem. He checked the roof and found no issues there. He then asked if he could go into the attic to have a look. When in the attic he noticed a few things including some missing insulation over the area that was having the issue. He re-spread the insulation and did a few other things as well which he thinks may resolve the problem. They also suggested adding a solar vent to move more air in the attic and came the next day to install it. Hopefully the problem is now resolved and I know that the roof is secure and also know that should I need more service they will promptly return. If considering a metal roof, contract these good folks!

Oakville, ON Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock Aluminum PVDF (2024)

Review: December 16, 2025

Completion: September 11, 2024

I have a new roof installed by Interlock and very pleased with the professionalism and aesthetics. My builder roof lasted 12 years and I needed something more durable. I spent months talking to steel roof installers and the thing that bothered me most, is whether the company will be around long enough to support warranty issues. The coatings were also prone to fading and I was looking for a worry free product.

My research led me to select aluminum roofing with PVDF coating for durability and resistance to Color fade. The lifetime transferable warranty and fact that Interlock has been in business for over 40 years led me to contact the company.

Interlock staff are courteous and Bruce gave a very fair price with a no pressure quote. My roof has some features that could affect aesthetics and Bruce arranged for special considerations at those locations. The installers were very courteous, and took the time necessary to do a great installation. They respected my views as a home owner and provided regular updates on progress and solutions. The installers cleaned up debris at the end of each day and coordinated with my neighbours to minimize impact from the roofing job. When rain was in the forecast the crew worked tirelessly to complete roofing sections that would be vulnerable to rainfall.

Overall I am pleased with everyone’s efforts and now hope the roof will be durable for many years.

Codys NB Metal Shingles Review — Leak-Free, Repair-Friendly Roof Install

Review: December 4, 2025

Completion: December 8, 2025

These wonderful folks managed to fit my new roof installation in right at the end of the year on a short timeline so that I could get solar panels installed as well. The team on site were friendly, professional, and clearly took a lot of pride in their work. The new roof looks great (and no longer leaks!). The metal shingles give me a lot more peace of mind, especially since they don't require removing an entire metal sheet to repair
