Portland, OR Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Safety Anchors Installed (2019)

Portland, OR

TL;DR: Portland Review Summary

Roofing installation in Portland: the homeowner, who’s had their roof for about 7 years and been very pleased with it, contacted Interlock Metal Roofing after a gutter-cleaning contractor flagged safety risks on a wet, slippery roof. Interlock’s Ivan assessed and determined anchor locations, returned about a week later to install the safety anchors (Product), offered to paint them black to be less conspicuous on the dark roof (Colors: black), provided photos and explanations, and the homeowner described the service as very professional, prompt, and excellent.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Portland

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Portland often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Portland may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Portland commonly last 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last much less (often 15–30 years depending on quality). Portland’s climate—cool, wet winters with about 35–37 inches of annual precipitation and only ~4–4.5 inches of snowfall—creates persistent moisture and elevated humidity that accelerate moss/algae growth and asphalt deterioration. Metal resists moisture, rot and moss, sheds heavy rain and occasional wind-driven storms better than asphalt, and isn’t harmed by the city’s light snow loads. Homeowners in Portland often choose durable metal systems to reduce maintenance, extend service life, and avoid premature replacement from moisture-related decay. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminum and come with a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection in this kind of wet, temperate environment.
Expect a metal roof to cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but many Portland homeowners weigh that against longer service life and lower maintenance. Local conditions — cool, rainy winters with roughly 36 in. of annual precipitation and persistent humidity that encourage moss growth and faster shingle wear—make durability an important factor when comparing materials. Final price depends on roof size, slope and complexity, tear-off and disposal, flashing and skylights, underlayment and labor; Portland’s occasional windstorms can also raise fastening and material requirements. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value (fewer repairs, longer warranty) rather than initial cost. A durable metal system can reduce future repair and replacement expenses. Interlock Metal Roofing positions its offerings for long-term ownership value, not as a low-cost bid.
Portland’s cool, wet winters and high winter humidity (about 36 in. annual rain) encourage moss and algae on shaded roofs, while snowfall is light (≈4–4.5 in.)—so constant moisture, not heavy snow load, is the main local concern. Lifespan: asphalt shingles typically last 20–30 years; metal roofing lasts over 50 years. Maintenance: asphalt needs more inspections, moss removal and periodic replacement of damaged shingles; metal requires less frequent cleaning and spot checks. Durability: metal resists rot, wind and moisture better; asphalt is more vulnerable to algae/moss and granule loss in rainy, shaded climates. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower life‑cycle and replacement costs for homeowners prioritizing durability and protection. Homeowners who want long-term performance and curb appeal often choose metal; Interlock Metal Roofing systems add weather‑tight interlocking panels, curb appeal and proven longevity for Portland’s wet climate.
This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with proper underlayment, attic insulation and ventilation do not sound like barn roofs. Portland’s cool, rainy winters (about 36 in./yr) mean frequent rain, and the region’s damp, shaded conditions encourage moss—both are maintenance and moisture concerns, not reasons metal is intrinsically noisy. Sound depends on the roof assembly (decking, underlayment, attic cavity, insulation) and installation quality; a well‑installed metal roof typically sounds similar to asphalt or tile from inside the house. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems designed to address those assembly and performance factors.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Portland. Metal roofing often has high solar reflectance, lowering summer cooling loads by reflecting sunlight. Overall performance depends on the whole roof assembly: adequate insulation, air sealing and attic ventilation determine heating and cooling savings. Portland has cool, rainy winters and about 35–37 inches of annual precipitation, so heating‑season performance and moisture management matter for year‑round efficiency. Persistent moisture and shaded conditions also encourage roof moss, which can reduce reflectivity and drainage over time. Choosing a light‑color finish or reflective coating and regular maintenance preserves reflectivity and maximizes savings. Homeowners compare materials to cut energy bills, improve comfort, and boost resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Portland’s roofs deal with long, wet seasons (about 36 in. annual rainfall) with only light snow, creating persistent moisture and frequent moss growth, plus occasional Pacific storms and gusty winds that can stress roofing systems. Metal roofing performs well in wind, hail, and heavy rain because it sheds water quickly, resists rot and moss when coated, and — when engineered with proper clips, seams, and fasteners — offers high wind uplift resistance and improved hail performance. Actual results depend on roofing system design, installation quality, and material durability (gauge, coating, warranty). Homeowners consider weather resilience to reduce leaks, maintenance, insurance claims, and long‑term costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are specifically engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance, making them a strong option for Portland’s wet, moss‑prone climate when properly specified and installed.
Portland’s climate has frequent rain and long damp periods that keep roofs wet, increasing corrosion risk for susceptible metals. Shade and tree cover also promote persistent moss growth that traps moisture against roofing surfaces. Metal roofing performance depends on the metal: some (uncoated steel) can corrode faster, while others (aluminum, stainless, well‑coated steels) are more corrosion resistant. Aluminum performs especially well in wet or coastal-like environments because it forms a protective oxide layer and resists rust. Homeowners in Portland should prioritize corrosion resistance to avoid staining, fastener failure, leaks, and shortened roof life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction for strong corrosion resistance and are protected further by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Metal roofing is generally considered low maintenance and performs well in Portland’s wet climate. But no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect metal roofs seasonally — check for debris, clear gutters, and inspect flashing, seams and penetrations (vents, chimneys) for sealant or fastener issues. Persistent Pacific Northwest rain and shaded, tree‑covered roofs promote moss and prolonged dampness, and seasonal leaf and needle debris can clog gutters and retain moisture. After storms, look for loose panels or damaged fasteners. Overall, metal resists rot and UV better than shingles, making it a durable, low‑maintenance choice for Portland homeowners.
Yes — in Portland a metal roof can increase home value. Buyers here favor durable, low‑maintenance roofs because Portland averages roughly 36–44 inches of rain and long, damp winters that accelerate shingle wear. Shaded, moist conditions also encourage roof moss and algae that shorten traditional roofing life. Premium materials boost curb appeal and the long lifespan and resistance to rot, moss and freeze‑thaw cycles improve buyer confidence. Architectural style matters by neighborhood, so match the material to local character. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing‑seam profiles in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, giving both aesthetic and longevity advantages when comparing roofing options.
As you compare roofing materials in Portland, remember wet, mild winters and many rainy days promote persistent moisture and moss growth, so roofs need good drainage and corrosion resistance. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installation with the installation of custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Roof lifespan is important when adding panels: solar is long‑term and adds load, so long‑lasting materials are often preferred. If you plan solar in the future, choose a durable roof now to avoid replacing panels or roof later. Interlock systems are solar compatible and designed to support solar mounting solutions.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

April 22, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

April 15, 2026

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

April 14, 2026

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Burnaby, BC Metal Roofing (Installed 2024)

April 13, 2026

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

April 12, 2026

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Willowbrook, IL Metal Roof Review — Interlock Roofing (Installed 2016)

April 11, 2026

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
