We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sudbury

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Sudbury often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Sudbury may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically have a much shorter service life and often need replacement every 15–30 years depending on exposure. Sudbury has long, snowy winters with high annual snowfall and pronounced freeze–thaw cycles—conditions that stress roofing materials through heavy snow loads, ice-damming and repeated thermal cycling, which accelerate asphalt wear but are well handled by metal roofing systems. Summer heat and UV are moderate but still contribute to asphalt deterioration over time. Because of Sudbury’s winter snow loads and freeze–thaw cycling, many homeowners choose durable metal systems for longer life, lower maintenance and better snow shedding. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminum and carry a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection in these local conditions.
Metal roofs in Sudbury generally cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but they offer longer service life and lower long‑term repair/replacement costs. Final price depends on roof size, slope and complexity, tear‑off, flashing and skylights, plus local labour and permitting. Sudbury’s heavy snowfall — often well over 250 cm some years — means roofs must be specified for higher snow loads and ice dam resistance, which can raise cost. Strong freeze–thaw cycles and cold winters also increase the need for robust flashing, underlayments and ventilation to prevent ice dams and premature wear. Many homeowners therefore compare materials by lifetime value, not just initial price: a durable metal system can reduce future repairs and earlier replacement. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value rather than competing as the lowest‑cost option.
In Sudbury, heavy snow and frequent freeze–thaw cycles matter: average annual snowfall is roughly 265 cm, and winters are long and cold, so ice dams and repeated thaw/refreeze are common. Lifespan: metal roofing lasts over 50 years; asphalt shingles typically last 15–30 years depending on quality and installation. Maintenance: metal needs occasional fastener/seal checks; shingles need more frequent inspections and replacement of damaged areas. Durability: metal resists snow loading, ice and wind better and sheds snow to reduce ice-dam risk; shingles can suffer granule loss, water ingress and accelerated wear from freeze–thaw. Long‑term value: metal has higher upfront cost but lower lifecycle replacement and repair costs, so homeowners prioritising durability and long‑term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals in Sudbury for its long service life, strong weather resistance and architectural curb appeal.
Short answer: No — that metal roofs are noisy is a common myth. Sudbury has long, cold, snowy winters with significant annual snowfall (about 263 cm) and frequent freeze–thaw cycles; those local conditions make proper decking, insulation and snow/ice detailing important for performance and noise control. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with underlayment, attic insulation and ventilation do not sound like barn roofs. Insulation, attic space and the full roof assembly affect sound, and installation quality (fasteners, clips, underlayment) matters. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound similar to asphalt or composite shingles. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes.
Yes. In Sudbury’s climate—cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze‑thaw cycles and significant snow loads—a metal roof can be energy efficient. Its reflective finish reduces summer heat gain, while the roof assembly, proper insulation and continuous ventilation determine winter heat loss and condensation control. In practice, metal’s reflectivity gives modest cooling benefits in Sudbury’s milder summers, but the biggest energy wins come from a well‑insulated, ventilated assembly that prevents heat loss and limits ice‑damming during freeze‑thaw cycles. Homeowners replacing a roof often prioritise energy efficiency to lower heating bills, improve indoor comfort and reduce moisture problems that shorten roof life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance by combining durable metal panels with detailing that complements insulation and ventilation.
Q: How does metal roofing stand up to Sudbury weather? Metal roofs perform very well against Sudbury’s heavy snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles—local averages are around 260 cm of snow a year—and long cold winters, which drive ice dams and thermal cycling. Properly designed metal systems shed snow, resist moisture and limit ice buildup; they also offer strong wind and hail resistance when specified for local conditions. Performance, however, depends on system design (pitch, snow guards, underlayment), installation quality (flashing, fasteners, ventilation) and material durability (gauge, finish). Homeowners weigh weather resilience to reduce leak, ice-damage and maintenance risk. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability with enhanced hail protection and tested wind resistance, making them a strong option for Sudbury properties when paired with correct design and professional installation.
FAQ—How corrosion‑resistant is metal roofing in Sudbury, ON? Greater Sudbury gets heavy winter snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, so roofs face prolonged moisture, ice and meltwater exposure that accelerate corrosion. Metal roofing performance depends on the metal: steel can rust without good coatings, while aluminium and stainless steels resist corrosion much better. Aluminium performs especially well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide layer. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to avoid leaks, fastener failure and premature replacement in Sudbury’s snowy, freeze–thaw conditions. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Comparing roofing options for a Sudbury home: metal roofing is durable and generally low‑maintenance, shedding snow better than many materials. Sudbury averages roughly 260–265 cm of snow annually, which stresses roofs during winter. The humid continental climate brings long, cold winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles that can promote ice dams and wear, so periodic checks are important. Inspect roofs after winter and storms: remove debris, clear gutters, check flashing, fasteners and penetrations (vents, chimneys). Weather events and seasonal debris can cause damage, but with simple periodic maintenance metal remains a very good, low‑maintenance choice for Sudbury.
In Greater Sudbury, heavy winter snowfall is common, which increases snow-load stress on roofs. Frequent freeze–thaw cycles and seasonal ice dams also accelerate wear and roofing seal failure. Yes — metal roofing can increase home value here. Buyers often pay more for durable, low‑maintenance roofs; premium materials boost curb appeal; and a long lifespan improves buyer confidence. That said, architectural style matters in neighbourhoods — choose a profile that suits local homes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles (slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam) and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, letting you balance aesthetic fit with superior performance for Sudbury’s climate.
As a Sudbury homeowner comparing roofing materials, remember heavy snowfall and pronounced freeze–thaw cycles increase snow loads and thermal movement—these affect roof anchoring and fastener longevity. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Roof lifespan matters—solar arrays increase service life expectations, so long‑lasting materials (like metal) are often preferred. If you plan to add solar later, consider it when replacing your roof to avoid premature removal. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions, minimising rework and protecting warranties in Sudbury’s snowy, freeze–thaw climate.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

Review: April 24, 2026

Completion: November 9, 2017

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Portland, OR Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Safety Anchors Installed (2019)

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Metal Shingle Roof Review in New Bedford, MA — Interlock (Installed 2005)

Review: March 10, 2026

Completion: February 5, 2005

We had our whole house done by Interlock in 2005, we've only had one issue (wind damage) and they came out the next day to repair the damage. At the time we left a small overhang undone with plans of removing it, however our plans changed and the roof had deteriorated with the passing of time. I called and they were very receptive to coming out to inspect and then replace. The work was done quickly, on time and to my complete satisfaction. I highly recommend Interlock, you wont be sorry!

We had our Interlock Metal Roof installed in 2011 and recently experienced some damage to the flashing. I called and spoke with Cheri, the Office and Service Department Administrator, who promptly scheduled Brad to assess the issue at the next available time. Despite one of the coldest winter days, Brad repaired the flashing efficiently and at no charge. Review: January 20, 2026

Completion: August 10, 2001

Fast response and excellent work. The technician drop by within couple of days, found the cause, and provided quote. The price was reasonable for the work scope. They were able to secure the work slot as soon as the raining season was over and kept me informed on the schedule. In addition, they inspected remaining roof as well. Note: the leak was due to gutter pulling the corner flashing. The 10+ year Interlock roof tile remained good.

Toronto, ON Metal Roof Review: Excellent Service & Solar Vent (2023)

Review: December 17, 2025

Completion: November 29, 2023

Had a metal roof installed a couple of years ago and love it. Had some issues lately and Ken (service technician and great guy) came to see the problem. He checked the roof and found no issues there. He then asked if he could go into the attic to have a look. When in the attic he noticed a few things including some missing insulation over the area that was having the issue. He re-spread the insulation and did a few other things as well which he thinks may resolve the problem. They also suggested adding a solar vent to move more air in the attic and came the next day to install it. Hopefully the problem is now resolved and I know that the roof is secure and also know that should I need more service they will promptly return. If considering a metal roof, contract these good folks!

Oakville, ON Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock Aluminum PVDF (2024)

Review: December 16, 2025

Completion: September 11, 2024

I have a new roof installed by Interlock and very pleased with the professionalism and aesthetics. My builder roof lasted 12 years and I needed something more durable. I spent months talking to steel roof installers and the thing that bothered me most, is whether the company will be around long enough to support warranty issues. The coatings were also prone to fading and I was looking for a worry free product.

My research led me to select aluminum roofing with PVDF coating for durability and resistance to Color fade. The lifetime transferable warranty and fact that Interlock has been in business for over 40 years led me to contact the company.

Interlock staff are courteous and Bruce gave a very fair price with a no pressure quote. My roof has some features that could affect aesthetics and Bruce arranged for special considerations at those locations. The installers were very courteous, and took the time necessary to do a great installation. They respected my views as a home owner and provided regular updates on progress and solutions. The installers cleaned up debris at the end of each day and coordinated with my neighbours to minimize impact from the roofing job. When rain was in the forecast the crew worked tirelessly to complete roofing sections that would be vulnerable to rainfall.

Overall I am pleased with everyone’s efforts and now hope the roof will be durable for many years.
