A small shingle came off of our 12-year old roof from around the furnace chimney during a recent rainstorm. Janer came out and put it back in adding some additional fasteners to make sure it doesn't come loose again. He was quick, efficient, knowledgeable and very pleasant to work with. Overall we are very pleased with our roof. It is standing up well to the weather we get in Calgary. We had some additional snow guards installed last fall to help protect our gutters from the snow slides (originally we only had them installed over entrances and our deck which didn't give protection to all of our gutters). I would recommend not skimping on snow guards during an initial install. **Positive: **Quality, Professionalism **Services: **Roof repair for storm & wind damage

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

How long will a metal roof last in Calgary, AB?

Metal roofs in Calgary commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically have shorter lifespans (often 15–30 years). Calgary’s climate—cold winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles, significant snow loads, periodic hail and strong chinook winds—puts stress on roofing materials and can shorten less durable systems, especially asphalt roofs that can crack, lose granules or fail under repeated ice and impact. Homeowners often choose metal for its resistance to snow load, hail damage and thermal cycling, plus lower maintenance and longer service life, making it cost-effective over time. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and include a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.

How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Calgary, AB?

Metal roofs in Calgary typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but many homeowners choose them for long‑term value. Final price depends on roof size, slope and complexity, tear‑off and disposal, flashing and skylights, choice of metal profile and finish, and local labour and permit costs. Calgary’s climate — heavy snow, freeze‑thaw cycles and wind — can affect installation methods and material choices, which influences price. Rather than only comparing initial cost, consider lifetime value: durable metal systems often lower future repair and replacement expenses and can improve resale value and energy performance. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value: we prioritise durable assemblies, quality installation and warranties rather than competing as the lowest‑cost option, so clients pay more up front for reduced maintenance and replacement risk over the years.

Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Calgary home?

Metal roofing typically lasts 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles usually last 15–30 years. Maintenance is lower for metal—periodic inspections, clearing valleys and checking fasteners—whereas shingles often need more frequent repairs or section replacements after storms. Metal is more durable overall: it tolerates heavy snow loads and repeated freeze–thaw cycles better and resists wind uplift; large hail can dent metal but often causes more catastrophic shingle damage—Calgary is known for frequent large hail and intense freeze–thaw weather, which increases shingle wear. Long‑term value favours metal if you plan to stay long term or prioritise low‑maintenance protection despite higher upfront cost. Homeowners who prioritise durability and long‑term protection often choose metal roofing. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because their interlocking profiles and concealed fasteners provide watertight, long‑lasting performance plus architectural curb appeal.

Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Calgary?

Common myth: metal roofs are noisy in rain. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. When fitted with proper underlayment, insulation and an attic or air space, a metal roof’s acoustic profile is comparable to asphalt shingles or tile. The roof assembly — underlayment, insulation, deck stiffness and ventilation — strongly affects how sound is transmitted, and poor installation can increase noise. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to other roofing materials. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed specifically for residential homes, incorporating the components above to control noise and performance.

How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Calgary?

Metal roofing can be energy efficient in Calgary because metal panels can reflect sunlight, reducing heat gain in spring and summer. Actual savings depend on the whole roof assembly — underlayment, insulation levels and ventilation all strongly influence performance — and a reflective finish alone won’t offset poor insulation. Calgary’s climate (cold winters, warm summers, strong solar exposure) means benefits vary by season: reflectivity helps cooling loads, while good insulation and airtightness control winter heat loss. Homeowners replacing a roof often weigh energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, meet building codes or rebates, and boost resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance through durable finishes and compatibility with appropriate insulation and ventilation strategies.

How does metal roofing in Calgary, AB withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?

Calgary, AB experiences frequent severe hail, strong thunderstorm winds and fast-moving storm systems that have caused widespread hail and wind damage in recent years. Metal roofing performs well in wind (interlocking panels resist uplift), sheds water and snow, and — when specified for impact resistance — withstands hail better than many shingle products. Actual performance depends on roofing system design (panel profile, gauge, fastening and underlayment), installation quality (sealing, flashings, correct fasteners) and material durability (steel/aluminium grade, coatings). Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to reduce repair costs, insurance claims and downtime after storms. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, but benefits are realised only with proper system selection and professional installation.

Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Calgary's wet climate?

Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depend largely on the metal type and protective finishes. Some metals—such as aluminium, stainless steel and zinc—are naturally more resistant to corrosion than untreated steel. Aluminium performs especially well in wet or coastal climates because it forms a protective oxide layer that resists rusting. Homeowners in Calgary should prioritise corrosion resistance to extend roof life, reduce maintenance and avoid staining or leaks that can lead to costly repairs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, improving durability, colour retention and long-term performance in Alberta’s variable climate.

How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Calgary?

Metal roofing is generally considered low maintenance, offering long service life and resistance to rot and insect damage. However, no roof is completely maintenance-free. Homeowners should inspect their metal roofs at least twice a year and after major storms. Check for accumulated debris, blocked gutters and downpipes, loose or corroded fasteners, damaged flashing, sealant deterioration, and compromised roof penetrations such as vents, chimneys and skylights. Clear leaves and branches promptly to prevent trapped moisture. Heavy snow, hail, wind and seasonal debris can dent panels, dislodge fasteners or damage seals. Overall, metal roofs are a durable, low-maintenance choice that performs well in Calgary’s climate when given periodic, targeted attention.

How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Calgary?

Metal roofing can increase home value in Calgary. Buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs that lower future repair and upkeep costs. Premium roofing materials also enhance curb appeal, making a property more attractive on the market. The long lifespan and strong warranties typical of metal systems improve buyer confidence and can justify a higher asking price. Architectural style matters within neighbourhoods—roofs that complement local character retain more value than styles that clash. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles such as slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam, available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, so homeowners can choose a premium look that suits Calgary’s diverse neighbourhoods.

Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Calgary?

Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are solar‑compatible: Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. supplies custom solar brackets made to fit their profiles, allowing secure PV attachment. Calgary roofing must resist frequent large hail and rapid Chinook-driven freeze–thaw cycles (and significant winter snow), so choose brackets and panels rated for impact, wind uplift and temperature swings. Roof lifespan is important when adding solar—PV is easier and cheaper on a long‑lasting roof—so homeowners should plan future solar during a re‑roof. In Calgary, long‑life materials like Interlock’s metal profiles are often preferred because they support solar mounting solutions and reduce the need to remove panels for roof replacement.
