Calgary, AB Metal Roofing Review ā Interlock Slate Look (Installed 2006)
Calgary, AB
TL;DR: Calgary Review Summary
Roofing installation in Calgary, Alberta: Interlock Roofing (Brad) replaced a large, steep 10/12āpitch roof with multiple ridges, valleys, skylights, chimneys and vents, installing a black slateālook system in early 2006. Despite initial skepticism and concerns about winter removal of old pine shakes, the crew completed the job with no upfront payment, used scaffolding and ropes to protect the roof in cold conditions, and after four seasons the roof has performed wellāwithstanding large hail without damage, enhancing the homeās appearance and earning the homeownerās recommendation.
When friends of ours, who had just had an Interlock Roof installed, raved about their new roof, we were skeptical, but invited Brad to make a presentation before Christmas, 2005. What he showed us about the roof and our unique requirements was right for us, so we gave him our order and work began in early 2006. No money up front and nothing until the job is completed to our full satisfaction was good enough for us. The roof is huge, a very steep 10/12 pitch and with a number of ridges and valleys, skylights, chimneys and vents. We were concerned about winter installation, and especially the removal of the old pine shakes in potentially inclement weather. Our concerns were unwarranted as they removed sections of the old roof and installed the new, during the winter, and without leaving it unprotected. Our compliments to the installers, who were very competent, taking great pride in doing it right, having to scaffold and secure by ropes, in some very cold and uncomfortable conditions. The results is a very beautiful black " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate look, which certainly enhances the look and value of our home. We have experienced four seasons of weather; cold, snow, hail, rain, wind and sunshine and it performed extremely well. We were concerned about hail but it withstood large hail without damage and the noise was no greater than the neighbourās cedar shakes. We have no hesitation in recommending Interlock Roofing, Brad and their installers, and we are confident we have a roof that will outlive our needs.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary
Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.
How long will a metal roof last in Calgary, AB?
Metal roofs in Calgary commonly last at least 50ā75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically have much shorter lifespans (often 15ā25 years), so asphalt usually needs replacement sooner. Calgary lies in āhail alley,ā exposing roofs to frequent damaging hailstorms that accelerate wear and denting for weaker materials. The city also sees pronounced freezeāthaw cycles, heavy winter snow loads and strong Chinook winds, all of which favour impactāresistant, lowāmaintenance roofing systems over softer, heatāsensitive materials. For Calgary homeowners comparing options, metal roofing offers superior longevity, snow shedding, hail resistance and lower lifecycle costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavyāgauge aluminium and come with a lifetime limited 50āyear transferable warranty designed for longāterm protection.
How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Calgary, AB?
FAQ ā How much does a metal roof cost in Calgary? A metal roof usually costs more upfront than asphalt shingles because materials and skilled labour are pricier. Final cost depends on roof area, slope and complexity (hips, valleys), tear-off, flashing, skylights, underlay, finish and labour. Local factors ā frequent summer hail and strong winds, plus regular winter freezeāthaw cycles that stress materials ā make durable metal systems particularly valuable in Calgary. Homeowners often compare lifetime value rather than initial price: a higher-quality metal roof with good coatings and warranty can reduce repair and early replacement costs. Expect suppliers to quote by area and complexity; warranties, fasteners and underlay quality materially affect long-term performance. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value rather than competing as a low-cost roofing option.
Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Calgary home?
Short answer: yes ā often, for Calgary homeowners who prioritise long-term durability and protection. Lifespan: metal roofs commonly last 40ā70+ years versus 15ā30 years for asphalt shingles. Maintenance: metal needs occasional seal/fastener checks; shingles require more frequent replacement and patching. Durability: metal resists hail, ice and wind better; shingles are more likely to crack or lose granules in severe hail and freezeāthaw events. Calgary sits in Canadaās āhail alley,ā so hail risk is a key factor. Freezeāthaw cycles and heavy winter snow/ice can accelerate shingle wear and roof leak risk, favouring more durable metal systems in many cases. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal often pays back via longer life, lower replacement frequency and better insurance outcomes. Homeowners seeking durability, low lifecycle cost and curb appeal often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals for its long-term performance, tight fit against wind/hail and refined architectural look.
Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Calgary?
This is a common myth: modern residential metal roofs do not sound like barn roofs during rain. When installed over solid decking with appropriate underlayment, insulation and an attic space, metal panels transmit little more sound than asphalt shingles or tiles. The roof assembly (decking, underlayments, insulation and ventilation) and installation quality strongly affect perceived noiseāpoor fastening or gaps can increase sound. Properly installed metal roofing is typically similar in sound to other materials in normal rainfall. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered and installed as complete residential roofing systems, including panels, flashings and recommended underlayments, to meet performance and acoustic expectations for homes in Calgary, AB.
How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Calgary?
Yesāmetal roofing can be energy efficient in Calgary, but benefits depend on the full roof system. Metal panels and high-reflectance finishes can reflect sunlight and reduce summer heat gain, while a wellādesigned roof assembly, sufficient insulation and proper attic ventilation are critical to overall energy performance and preventing ice dams in cold months. Calgaryās climateācold winters, fairly sunny summers and frequent Chinook eventsāmeans heating demand often dominates, so insulation and air sealing usually matter more than reflectivity alone. Homeowners researching roof replacement consider energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve comfort, extend roof life, meet building requirements and boost resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support longāterm home performance when combined with correct assembly, insulation and ventilation.
How does metal roofing in Calgary, AB withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?
Calgary roofs face frequent severe thunderstorms, Chinook winds and damaging hailāsometimes golfāball sizeāplus strong gusts and heavy precipitation that challenge roof systems. Metal roofing can perform very well: correctly designed and installed standingāseam or interlocking panels resist uplift in high winds, shed water and snow, andādepending on gauge and profileāprovide good impact resistance to hail. Performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability; thin gauges or poor fastening increase risk of denting or failure. Homeowners consider weather resilience to minimise repair costs, avoid leaks, meet insurance and code requirements, and extend roof life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance.
Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Calgary's wet climate?
Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depend on the metal used. Different metals and alloys perform differently: steel can corrode without proper coatings, while aluminium and stainless steels are inherently more corrosion-resistant. Aluminium performs especially well in wet, humid or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide layer. Homeowners should consider corrosion resistance to ensure long service life, lower maintenance, fewer leaks, preserved appearance and to protect their investment and warranty. Choosing corrosion-resistant materials is especially important in Calgary, AB, where winter salts and freeze-thaw cycles accelerate deterioration. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems use aluminium construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are finished with the proprietary Alunar Coating System for extra protection against weathering, salt and moisture.
How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Calgary?
Metal roofing in Calgary, Alberta is generally low maintenance and highly durable, resisting rot, insect damage and many weather impacts. No roof is completely maintenanceāfree; periodic checks are recommended, especially after storms or seasonal changes. Homeowners should inspect for accumulated debris, clear gutters, and check flashings, sealant and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights). Look for loose fasteners, minor corrosion, or sealant deterioration and address them promptly. Heavy snow, ice buildup, freezeāthaw cycles, wind and hail can cause damage or dislodge debris, increasing risk of leaks. With routine inspections and simple upkeep, metal roofing remains one of the most durable, lowāmaintenance choices for Calgary homes.
How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Calgary?
Yes, metal roofing can increase a Calgary homeās resale value. Many buyers prioritise durable, lowāmaintenance roofs that withstand Albertaās seasonal extremes, and premium materials can significantly enhance curb appeal. A long service life, excellent weather performance and transferable warranties improve buyer confidence, often making properties more competitive. Architectural style matters: a metal roof that complements the character of the street and neighbourhood will add more value than one that looks out of place. Interlock Metal Roofing systems provide multiple architectural profilesāslate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seamāavailable in heavyāgauge aluminium and solid copper, letting homeowners match heritage or contemporary styles while gaining the longevity and lowāupkeep benefits of metal roofing.
Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Calgary?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., and the system is designed to support solar mounting solutions. In Calgary, frequent freezeāthaw cycles and periodic hailstorms can shorten weaker roofs, so choose a roof with long lifespan before adding panels; roof lifespan is critical because panels outlast many coverings and are expensive to remove and reāinstall. If you plan solar later, select durable, hailāresistant, freezeātolerant materials nowālongālasting metal interlock systems are often preferred to protect your solar investment.
