Ottawa, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Roofing Systems (Installed 2010)

Ottawa, ON

TL;DR: Ottawa Review Summary

Roofing installation in Ottawa: a large apartment building in the Glebe required a challenging roof replacement with close proximity to adjacent buildings, a short timeframe, and a high degree of difficulty. The owner praised Interlock Roofing Systems—salesperson Dave Brown, service staff Sheldon and Tony, and installation crew Rick, Sandra, Al, James and Sheldon—for professional, efficient, responsive work; they worked cleanly in pouring rain, wind and freezing temperatures, finished the massive job in a week, and reported an outstanding result.

Usually, I don't have the time to write testimonials or reviews of any sort, but in this particular instance, I felt that I need to do so. We all know how stressful and expensive home renovation projects can be. Roofing replacement is one of the most important and also one of the most expensive. As the owner of quite a large apartment building in the established Glebe neighbourhood in Ottawa, my project posed many challenges - proximity to adjacent buildings, a short timeframe and a very high degree of difficulty. Property management allowed me to surround myself with some exceptional trades, but "Interlock Roofing Systems" were unknown to me, just liked the product. The whole experience ended up being outstanding from the moment I met Dave Brown, the salesperson, Sheldon and Tony in the Service department. Professional, efficient, and responsive, but I must say that the crew that did the installation blew me away. Rick, Sandra, Al, James and Sheldon were among the nicest groups of people I've had the pleasure of dealing with in my property management and ownership experience. With their professional approach and respectful and knowledgeable conduct, Rick and the crew made me feel that I was getting outstanding work done by friends. Clean, fast, and efficient... worked in the pouring rain, wind, and freezing temperatures and finished a massive job in a week. We all know when someone goes that "extra mile," and that's what I end up getting from Rick and the guys. The result - OUTSTANDING. Thank you.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Ottawa

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Ottawa often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Ottawa may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

How long will a metal roof last in Ottawa, ON?

Metal roofs in Ottawa commonly last 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last 15–25 years depending on quality and maintenance. Ottawa’s climate — cold, snowy winters with heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, plus warm, humid summers — accelerates wear on roofing materials and can cause ice dams, corrosion and thermal movement that shortens asphalt life. Homeowners choose metal for its longevity, resistance to snow loads, better performance through freeze–thaw cycles, and lower long‑term maintenance costs. Metal also resists wind, occasional hail and UV damage better than asphalt. For Ottawa homeowners comparing options, a durable metal system reduces replacement frequency and coping with heavy winters. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and carry a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.

How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Ottawa, ON?

How much does a metal roof cost in Ottawa, ON? Metal roofing typically costs more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final price depends on your roof’s size, slope and complexity, tear-off and disposal, flashing and skylights, and labour. Local construction factors — Ottawa labour rates, permit fees, seasonal access and winter-weather considerations such as ice-damming prevention — can influence cost and installation timing. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value rather than initial price: metal roofs often have longer warranties, lower maintenance and greater longevity, which can reduce future repair and replacement costs. When evaluating quotes, review expected service life, warranty coverage and any energy or insurance benefits. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value and durable systems rather than competing solely as a low-cost roofing option.

Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Ottawa home?

Short answer: often, yes — but it depends on priorities. Lifespan: asphalt shingles typically 15–25 years; quality metal roofs last 40–70+ years. Maintenance: asphalt needs periodic shingle replacement, moss/ice-dam checks and granule-loss monitoring; metal usually needs less frequent upkeep. Durability: metal resists heavy snow loads, ice and wind better; asphalt is more vulnerable to freeze–thaw damage and UV-driven brittleness. Ottawa has long, snowy winters (annual snowfall ~220–260 cm) and more frequent freeze–thaw swings, which stress roofing materials. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal often pays off via longer life and lower replacement frequency; asphalt is cheaper initially but may incur more repairs/replacements over time. Homeowners who prioritise durability and long-term protection in Ottawa often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because they combine robust, interlocking panels for weather-tight performance with strong architectural curb appeal and long service life.

Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Ottawa?

This is a common myth: metal roofs in Ottawa are not inherently noisy. Modern residential metal roofing installed over solid decking and with proper underlayment, insulation and an air-filled attic generally do not sound like old barn roofs. Sound depends on the whole roof assembly—insulation, attic space, underlayment and fastening method—as well as installation quality. A high-quality install with appropriate insulation and ventilation results in rain noise comparable to asphalt shingles or tile. Poor installation or mounting directly to open purlins can increase noise. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are supplied and installed as complete residential roofing systems designed to control weather and acoustic performance.

How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Ottawa?

In Ottawa, a metal roof can be energy efficient. Metal roofing can reflect sunlight, reducing heat gain in summer, while coatings and light colours improve reflectivity. Overall energy performance also depends on the full roof assembly—insulation levels, underlay, and ventilation—which control heat flow and moisture year‑round. Ottawa’s cold winters and warm summers mean benefits vary by season; reflective roofing helps summer cooling, while proper insulation and air sealing matter most for winter savings. Homeowners researching replacement often prioritise energy efficiency to lower heating and cooling costs, improve comfort, reduce maintenance and extend roof life, and qualify for rebates or higher resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.

How does metal roofing in Ottawa, ON withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?

Ottawa homeowners face cold, snowy winters, freezing rain and ice storms, spring/fall high winds, and warm‑season thunderstorms that can produce hail and strong gusts. Metal roofing performs well in severe weather: when designed and fastened correctly it resists wind uplift, sheds snow and ice, and—especially in heavier gauges and impact‑resistant profiles—offers strong hail protection, though very large hail can dent some panels. Performance depends on roofing system design (profile, underlayment, fastening), installation quality, and material durability (gauge, alloy, coatings). Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to reduce storm damage, leaks, insurance claims and maintenance in Ottawa’s variable climate. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance and deliver best results when properly specified and installed.

Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Ottawa's wet climate?

Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depend on the metal type and any coatings used. Some metals—such as galvanized steel—offer basic protection, while others like aluminium naturally resist corrosion and won’t rust, making them well suited to Ottawa’s wet and winter climates. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to avoid leaks, structural damage and higher long‑term maintenance or replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection against moisture and environmental contaminants. Choosing a corrosion‑resistant system reduces maintenance, preserves appearance and extends service life, giving better value and peace of mind for Ottawa homes.

How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Ottawa?

Metal roofing in Ottawa is generally considered low maintenance due to durable coatings and materials that resist corrosion and ice buildup. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should perform seasonal inspections—after storms and in spring and fall—to spot loose fasteners, damaged seams or deteriorated sealant. Remove leaves and branches that trap moisture, keep eaves and gutters clear, and check flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights. Pay attention to roof penetrations (vents, stacks, solar mounts) and fastener integrity. Severe weather, heavy snow, ice dams and seasonal debris can accelerate wear or cause localized damage. Overall, metal roofing remains a durable, low‑maintenance choice for Ottawa homes when paired with occasional care.

How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Ottawa?

In Ottawa, ON, a metal roof can increase home value because buyers value durable, low‑maintenance roofs; premium roofing materials can enhance curb appeal; and a long lifespan can improve buyer confidence during resale. A well‑chosen metal roof that suits the street character often yields better returns, since architectural style matters in neighbourhoods—an industrial standing seam fits modern infill, while slate or cedar looks suit heritage streets. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles such as slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam, available in heavy gauge aluminium and solid copper. When installed to match local style and building codes, metal roofing frequently becomes a marketable asset for Ottawa sellers.

Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Ottawa?

In Ottawa, roofs must withstand heavy snow loads and increasing freeze–thaw cycles that raise moisture intrusion and stress on fasteners. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Before adding panels, consider roof lifespan — long‑lasting materials reduce the need to remove and reinstall arrays. When replacing a roof, plan for future solar so mounting and load capacity are optimised. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and designed to support solar mounting solutions, making them a sensible long‑term choice compared with shorter‑lived roofing options in Ottawa’s climate.
