Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Richmond, British Columbia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |

What our customers are saying:
Last Christmas, our rental sprung a roof leak. Interlock was able to seal the leak immediately and to complete the installation in February. I have confidence that the new roof will be trouble free as we have an Interlock roof installed on our house ten years ago.
No hesitation recommending this firm to others. Especially when you need to get one firm to prime both the new roof and a solar addition on that new roof.
See my comments above Don't be afraid to ask to be first to present your offer to clients. If the client sees the value of the roof it won't matter what the other offers are. As mentioned previously, please pick up your lawn sign.
The product is excellent, but the installation of the flashing below a north-facing window was not installed correctly, resulting in leaks when it rained and wind was blowing from the north. The flashing was buckled and caused rain to pour in from the north side of the house, coming in through the pot lights in my downstairs family room. After a ridiculous amount of communication back and forth, it was finally fixed 2 1/2 years later! I had to pay for my own home inspection, which Interlock should have paid for. The final fix took approximately 45 minutes (from a part-time employee, who knew what he was doing). I would not recommend this company to anyone after the terrible customer service I received.NegativeResponsivenessServicesRoof installation
Interlock Roofing could better commit to starting the job on time.
They could have improved on coordination with the trades people. It has to do with where the container was dropped off and it should've been moved somewhere else. When the guys finished, they left a few tarps, extra flashing, and the old skylight, and I would like someone to come pick it all up. They indicated someone would come back to get it but they haven't come or followed up about it.
They have a good product, but they are too pricey
Thank you for this beautiful amazing roof and we love it so much...it is way more than what we expected!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Richmond
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Richmond, British Columbia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Richmond.
Why won't my aluminum metal roof rust like steel roofing can?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron — the element that oxidizes and corrodes in steel. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that protects the metal underneath; when scratched, this layer self-heals. For Richmond, where average annual rainfall reaches 1437 mm and salt air from the Pacific can accelerate corrosion in ferrous metals, this chemistry matters. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy, combined with the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, creates a two-stage defense that survives coastal environments from BC to Antarctica without the ongoing rust maintenance steel requires.
How does a metal roof handle Richmond's winter snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice effectively because their smooth, sloped surfaces reduce adhesion and allow meltwater to flow away — preventing the heavy ice-dam formations that trap water against asphalt shingles. Richmond receives about 57 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 38 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which is ideal for metal shedding. The four-way interlocking panels in Interlock's designs lock together so tightly that water cannot penetrate seams; paired with proper installation pitch and optional snow guards (which you can add to slow shedding on steep pitches), the system keeps moisture out while letting gravity do its work.
Will a metal roof hold up in Richmond's winter wind gusts?
Yes — Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Richmond's typical wind gusts reach about 114 km/h, meaning the roof is engineered with a safety margin well above local conditions. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together on all sides, distributing wind load across the entire assembly rather than allowing individual panels to lift. This mechanical connection, combined with proper fastening into the deck, delivers the kind of storm performance that has made metal roofing the choice for coastal and exposed environments across Western Canada for decades.
Does a metal roof protect against hail damage, and can it lower my insurance?
Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum construction and impact resilience have made metal roofing eligible for insurance discounts in many regions. Because the roof doesn't develop the splits, cracks, or loss of granules that hail causes in asphalt, insurance carriers recognize the lower long-term claims risk. Contact your insurer with Interlock's ESR-1790 evaluation report and UL rating; many offer premium reductions that partially offset the roof's upfront cost over its lifetime.
Can a metal roof actually reduce my cooling costs in a Richmond climate?
energy-efficient colors with high solar reflectance — up to 0.55 for Aged Copper Penny, and 0.84 thermal emissivity across the range — reflect sunlight that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates as heat into your home. In Richmond, with about 2927 sunshine hours per year and a mean temperature of 10.1°C, the benefit compounds over decades: a cooler roof reduces air-conditioning load in warmer months and can lower your energy bills. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification proves the reflectance; choose a light or cool-toned profile, and the metal surface works year-round to minimize heat transfer compared to dark asphalt, which absorbs and stores solar energy.
Is it true that metal tile doesn't need structural reinforcement like real stone tile does?
True. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft — roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile — so it installs directly over most existing roof decks without reinforcement. Real tile can weigh 15+ lb/sq ft and often requires structural upgrades costing thousands. For Richmond homeowners, this means a single retrofit can replace an aging asphalt or even slate roof with the authentic look of Mediterranean tile without removing rafters or adding posts. The aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio delivers durability (covered by the Guardian lifetime warranty) while the installation cost and timeline remain competitive with mid-range shingles.
How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof really need compared to asphalt or wood?
Aluminum roofing requires minimal maintenance — no algae treatment, no resealing, no granule rake-off. Asphalt shingles demand regular moss and algae cleaning in wet climates like Richmond (1437 mm annual rain), plus seal-coat applications every few years. Wood cedar shake requires annual inspection and treatment to prevent rot and insect damage. Interlock's non-porous, non-organic aluminum surface doesn't absorb moisture or host biological growth; a occasional rinse clears debris. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty against chalking and fading means you won't repaint it, and the Guardian warranty covers no prorated material defects for the original owner's lifetime — eliminating the hidden costs of ongoing upkeep that other materials incur.
Can metal roofing be installed directly over my existing roof, or does it require tear-off?
In most cases, metal panels install directly over your existing roof without tear-off — the light weight of aluminum (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, Shake at 0.58, Tile at 0.59) avoids structural strain that might otherwise require removal. A local installer from Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd., serving your region since 1983, assesses deck condition, fastening pattern, and local code (ESR-1790 compliance for IBC/IRC). If the existing roof is sound, the new metal roof installs as an overlay, saving the labor cost and landfill impact of tear-off. If removal is needed, the project timeline extends, but the installer will outline options upfront so you understand the full scope and can budget accordingly.
Is an aluminum metal roof actually more environmentally friendly than asphalt shingles?
Interlock aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable, and at end of life (often 50+ years hence), the panels return to the scrap stream as valuable aluminum — never ending up in a landfill like asphalt shingles do. Each tear-off of asphalt generates thousands of pounds of waste; over Richmond's 1437 mm of rain annually, asphalt degrades faster and requires earlier replacement. By installing a metal roof that lasts a lifetime and is fully recyclable, you break the replace-tear-off-landfill cycle. The Guardian's 50-year transferable warranty ensures the roof outlasts multiple asphalt replacements, reducing cumulative waste and manufacturing emissions per year of protection — a meaningful sustainability win for homeowners who care about their environmental footprint.
What does the lifetime warranty on Interlock metal roofing actually cover, and is it really transferable?
The Guardian lifetime limited warranty covers the original homeowner for rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance — with zero prorating, meaning you never face a percentage deductible as the roof ages. Upon sale, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for a 50-year term from completion, adding resale appeal. The Alunar coating itself carries a 30-year separate warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured). For Richmond homeowners, this means two distinct protections: the aluminum substrate (which cannot rust or rot due to its chemistry) and the fluorocarbon finish (guaranteed against UV degradation). Most asphalt roofs fail within 20-25 years; this single roof genuinely becomes the last you'll buy.
