We had our Interlock Metal Roof installed in 2011 and recently experienced some damage to the flashing. I called and spoke with Cheri, the Office and Service Department Administrator, who promptly scheduled Brad to assess the issue at the next available time. Despite one of the coldest winter days, Brad repaired the flashing efficiently and at no charge. I may be biased, but every time I pull into our driveway, I truly believe we have the best roof on our street. I would highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd.

I am very unhappy with the quality of the service i recieved and the quality of the product compared to the roof that was i stalled by Interlock on my main house 2 years ago. The capping is different. I was never informed of this before signing the contract. I was never even given the oprtunity to pay for an upgraded capping so the existing roof would look like me addition. Communication as to product change.

Review: September 25, 2021 Completion: September 7, 2021

I talked with several roofing companies and this is the only one that proposed to install it correctly. Others wanted to leave the old shingles on, and use wood strapping that would rot. Overall, there were too many problems with this installation and too much hassle in getting it resolved to recommend this company. At the end of the installation, I was pressured to sign a Customer Completion Certificate immediately. It was a Sunday evening. I had just finished dinner and I needed to walk the dog. I hadn't even seen the completed roof but I was supposed to immediately sign a form saying I had received all of the materials and services, all debris was removed and was completely satisfied with the product and workmanship. When I asked to review the roof and area with the installer, he complained that he had already put away his ladder and I SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM I wanted to see it before he put away his ladder. The installer should review the installation with the customer to show that the roof was correctly installed, there are the right number of snow guards, the area is clean, etc. I wanted to go on the roof to review to check the skylight installation, the general installation, and the eaves. This could be done with a good set of pictures instead of going on the roof. I shouldn't be made to feel like verifying the installation is a big hassle or pressured to sign a form immediately without being able to review the install. The debris should have been cleaned better. I found several large pieces of aluminum, and a lot of other debris. There was debris in the eaves that probably would have plugged the downspouts. This recently happened at my rental property and caused water damage in the basement. I had to argue with the installer that the eaves should be cleaned. He said they were already dirty and he doesn't do that. I was most concerned about metal that would plug downspouts but Maurice kept arguing about how much gravel was already there. I paid for the installation after the installer grudgingly reviewed the install with me minus the legal 10% holdback that is law in Ontario. I should not be hassled (by Maurice) for following the legal payment for construction services in Ontario. I shouldn't have to argue with the installer or be told that they are coming back immediately for the rest of the money. I had issues that were not resolved but the installer made it very clear he was upset that I put "NO" on the completion certificate for question 2 and 4. This interaction really bothered me. Again, I shouldn't have to argue to have my questions answered or issues heard. Maurice should have listened to my concerns. He did that very poorly. Mostly, he just seemed to tell me I was wrong and didn't want to understand what my complaints were. Quite often, he was talking about something different than what my actual complaint was. The workmanship of the skylight installation was poor. The dimensions of deck box was incorrect and were out by 5/8" in one place, and the skylight was installed crooked. I can understand that a wood cut could be out by 1/16" and maybe 1/8", but not 5/8". There are many angled screws poking into the living area inside that look like they are supposed to be attaching the deck box to the roof, but attach to nothing. I am not even sure if the deck box is secured to the roof.

These folks are fantastic! From our initial meeting with John to installation by Moses and David they have been great. The roof looks great and their attention to detail was impressive. I thought I had an issue with a trim piece coming loose and called. Within a day the service fellow was here and it turns out the trim came from a skylight...nothing to do with the roof. They fixed it anyway. Spectacular product and even better service! Services Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Kitchener

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Kitchener, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Kitchener.

How does a metal roof handle Kitchener's snow and ice buildup?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface prevents adhesion — especially important here where you average about 107 cm of snow annually. The four-way interlocking panels create a unified, seamless plane that doesn't trap moisture in seams or under shingles. Interlock's warranty covers snow load performance, and the standing seam profile is engineered for maximum shedding in freeze-thaw cycles, of which Kitchener sees roughly 88 per year. Snow guards are available if you want controlled release for safety.

Will freeze-thaw damage hurt my metal roof over time?

No. Aluminum's crystalline structure actually becomes stronger with thermal cycling — it doesn't expand and contract like asphalt or absorb moisture that causes cracking. With around 88 freeze-thaw days per year in Kitchener, this matters: the material remains stable while asphalt shingles split and curl. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in every Interlock panel is designed to handle this abuse without degradation. That's why the Guardian Warranty covers splitting and cracking — the roof simply won't do it.

Why should I choose aluminum over steel metal roofing?

Steel rusts; aluminum cannot. Steel requires a protective coating that eventually fails, exposing bare iron to Kitchener's 779 mm annual rainfall and winter moisture. Aluminum forms a micro-thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, stopping corrosion before it starts. Add Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF coating applied to both sides, and you're protected 30 years against chalking and fading. Even in salt-air environments far harsher than central Ontario, Interlock panels outlast steel by decades.

Can a metal roof stay secure in Kitchener's wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), and Kitchener's typical gusts reach about 115 km/h. The four-way interlocking design means each panel locks to its neighbors horizontally and vertically, distributing wind load across the entire roof surface rather than relying on fasteners alone. That redundancy is why the ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 certifies these panels for high-wind zones, and why the warranty is unconditional — they're engineered for what this region actually throws at them.

Do I need to reinforce my house before installing a metal roof?

Almost never. The Mediterranean Tile profile installs at roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft — about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile — and can go directly over most existing roofs without structural work. Kitchener homes built to handle asphalt shingles have far more than enough capacity for metal. The Slate profile is even lighter at around 0.41 lb/sq ft. This lightweight advantage eliminates expensive framing upgrades, speeds installation, and lets you install over your existing roof, saving tear-off costs and keeping material out of the landfill.

Will a metal roof keep my home cooler and lower energy bills?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat rather than absorb it: solar reflectance reaches up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity is 0.84, meaning less heat enters your home on sunny days. With about 2970 annual sunshine hours in Kitchener, that reflection adds up over the cooling season. Asphalt roofs absorb this same energy, raising attic temperatures and forcing air conditioning to work harder. The Cool Roof Rating Council verifies these values, and some utilities offer rebates for qualifying installations. Metal outlasts asphalt by decades, so savings compound.

How much upkeep does a metal roof need?

Almost none. Asphalt shingles need regular inspections, missing-shingle replacement, gutter cleaning to prevent buildup, and eventual full replacement every 15-25 years. Metal roofs need occasional gutter cleaning — the same as any roof — and that's it. The Alunar coating resists chalk and fade for 30 years, and the aluminum substrate never rots, splits, or loses impact resistance. With 107 cm of annual snow and 779 mm of rain, your roof sheds water aggressively, and the hard surface prevents moss and debris accumulation. You simply maintain your gutters and enjoy the roof.

How long does metal roof installation take, and can you install over my old roof?

Installation typically takes 2-5 days depending on roof size and complexity. Unlike asphalt, which requires a full tear-off, Interlock panels often install directly over your existing roof if the deck is sound and free of major damage. This saves labor, eliminates disposal costs, and reduces on-site disruption. The installer confirms your roof's condition, measures for panels, and secures them to the deck using industry-standard fasteners. The four-way interlocking design speeds the process because each panel secures to its neighbors, not just the deck. Kitchener's local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd., has been installing these systems since 1998.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?

Yes, when you calculate the full 50-year lifecycle. Asphalt costs less initially but requires replacement twice: once around year 20 and again around year 40. Metal costs more upfront but lasts 50+ years with a lifetime limited warranty — non-prorated for the original owner and transferable 50 years for the next. You also save on maintenance, repairs, energy (via reflective coatings), and disposal. Current promotions include interest-free financing for 3 months and savings of at least $2499 on installation. Over 50 years, metal becomes the last roof you buy, eliminating the tear-off-and-landfill cycle three times over.

What fire protection does a metal roof provide?

Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and carries a Class A fire classification when installed to spec — the highest fire rating available. This matters for insurance and safety: aluminum cannot ignite, spread flame, or contribute fuel to a fire. Many insurers recognize non-combustible roofing and offer lower premiums. The ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms fire performance for building code compliance. In Kitchener, where fire safety codes apply to all residential and commercial structures, choosing non-combustible means passing inspection without exception and protecting your home during a worst-case scenario. Your policy and peace of mind both benefit.
