We built our house 25 years ago from plans I found in Country Living Magazine. It is a perfect blend of the “new” house my husband wanted and the “old” farmhouse that I wanted, nestled at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, it was a perfect place to raise our kids. We still love it just as much as we did then…but it was in need of some updates. It was time to replace the original roof, and why not repaint too? This has been the summer to do it all. We looked at asphalt shingles, but nothing wowed me. Some colors were “close,” but it was still a lot of money to spend on something that was just o.k. I kept thinking about a metal roof, but my husband wanted something traditional. Thank goodness an advertisement popped up on my computer one day. We loved the look but wondered how they would really look. I did a little research and made the call. We were impressed!!! Not an easy feat! The colors were fabulous! A perfect blend of what we were both wanting. After months of discussions and searching, we bought our roof that night. I so wish we had started with Interlock! Thankfully because of when we ordered, there was a few weeks wait time… Just enough to get the painter in to paint, and enough time to change the porch pillars too. Jesse was our crew leader for installation; he was great, and so were all members of our install crew. They were so polite and kept the area cleaned up on a daily basis. I love the new look! And knowing that this roof will last a lifetime, literally, is very comforting. Thanks for a job well done.

The truck showed up to deliver roof with no appointment - my 68 year old husband had to help unload and break down the pallet - my calls to the area coordinator and headquarters were largely unanswered - I incurred international call fees because I was calling BC almost daily - our project was projected 8 - 10 weeks, install 13 weeks - which is ok except that he communication was so poor. the roofing materials killed the grass in our yard it laid there so long. We love the roof, glad we did it. The heat on our second floor inside was immediately mitigated with the roofing system. Overall we would buy the product again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Seward

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Seward, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Seward.

How does a metal roof handle the snow and ice we get in Seward, Illinois?

Aluminum's smooth surface sheds snow and ice faster than asphalt, reducing dangerous accumulation on steep pitches. Seward averages about 77 cm of snow annually across roughly 84 freeze-thaw cycles, which can crack and curl traditional shingles—but aluminum's oxide layer self-heals from stress and temperature swings without degradation. The four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist 120 mph wind gusts, so snow guard brackets install securely to control slides safely. Your roof won't rot or split from ice-dam moisture, the main threat to wood and asphalt in freeze-thaw zones.

Will freeze-thaw cycles damage an aluminum metal roof?

No—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw climates because it contains no iron, cannot rust, and expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or curling. Seward experiences roughly 84 freeze-thaw days per year, a condition that degrades asphalt within 10–15 years but leaves aluminum unharmed. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against fading and chalking, remains flexible across temperature swings. Unlike slate or concrete tile, which can shatter from internal ice pressure, solid aluminum panels absorb stress and keep their structural integrity year after year, even in your region's 77 cm annual snowfall.

Can an aluminum roof rust? What about in wet Midwest climates?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; it forms a self-healing oxide layer that repairs itself when scratched, even in salt air or acidic rain. Seward receives about 838 mm of rainfall annually—enough moisture that steel roofs would corrode within years. The Alunar fluorocarbon finish (applied to both panel sides for extra protection) adds a 30-year warranty against coating failure, so you're protected from both material corrosion and finish breakdown. This matters in climates with frequent moisture and freeze-thaw stress; a steel roof would require expensive maintenance or replacement, while your aluminum roof simply resists oxidation by nature.

Is a metal roof safe in wind? Do the panels stay put in storms?

Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to interlock tightly and are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Seward's typical wind gusts reach about 95 km/h (59 mph), well within that threshold, so your roof will perform confidently through normal weather and strong seasonal gusts. The UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating (the highest available) demonstrates the same impact-resistance engineering that makes panels grip each other during wind stress. Installation over a solid deck with nails into rafters creates a unified system—not loose shingles that lift and blow away. Your roof stays locked in place.

Does a metal roof get damaged by hail? Can it lower my insurance costs?

Aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This proven durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance premium discounts because the roof resists the damage that asphalt and wood cannot. Seward's 3,120 annual sunshine hours and moderate hail exposure mean you're investing in damage prevention. Unlike asphalt (which dimples and loses granules), aluminum dents minimally and does not lose performance. Check with your insurer about discounts for Class 4 rated roofs; many carriers recognize the reduced claim risk and reward you in your premium.

Can a metal roof actually cool my home in summer or reduce energy bills?

Yes—Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, measured by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Reflective coatings bounce heat that asphalt absorbs, lowering roof surface temperature and reducing air-conditioning load. In Seward, with 3,120 sunshine hours per year and warm summers, a reflective metal roof measurably cuts cooling costs compared to dark asphalt. The benefit compounds over decades; while your home benefits year-round, your heating costs remain stable because the roof's light weight and thermal properties work in all seasons. energy-efficiency qualification means real performance, not marketing claims.

How long does a metal roof last, and what does the warranty actually cover?

Interlock's Guardian Warranty is a non-prorated lifetime limited warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, giving your home extraordinary residual value. The roof's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy and dual-sided 70% PVDF coating are engineered for 25+ years minimum, but because the material does not degrade like asphalt, wood, or tile, most roofs last 50+ years. After 25 years of Seward's 77 cm annual snow, 838 mm rain, and 84 freeze-thaw cycles, your roof will still be performing when traditional roofs have been replaced three times.

My home is older—do I need to reinforce the structure to support a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is required. The Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it retrofits over most existing roofs without adding structural load. Even the Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft, while Slate is 0.41 lb/sq ft. Your home's rafters and trusses, built to handle slate or tile weight years ago, will support aluminum roofing with ease, making retrofits straightforward and affordable. This weight advantage is crucial in older Seward homes where structural upgrades would be cost-prohibitive and logistically complex.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shakes?

Aluminum roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no annual inspections for granule loss, rot, or splits like asphalt and wood demand. Rain and snowmelt naturally clean your roof; in Seward's 838 mm annual rainfall and 77 cm snow, periodic flushing happens automatically. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating resists chalking and fading for 30 years, so repainting is never necessary. Asphalt requires periodic repairs, wood shakes invite moss and rot, and tile cracks from freeze-thaw stress; your aluminum roof stays intact across all Seward's 84 annual freeze-thaw cycles, eliminating costly service calls and extending your investment indefinitely.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Seward, and do they understand our local weather?

Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Kendall County region since 2001, with deep familiarity with Seward's snow load, freeze-thaw patterns, and moisture conditions. Our local installers understand how to size snow guards for 77 cm annual snowfall, detail panels for 838 mm yearly rain, and secure the roof to resist 95 km/h gusts—all specific to your climate. They install to ICC-ES ESR-1790 specification (reissued 2025 for IBC/IRC code compliance), ensuring your warranty is honored and your roof performs through every Seward season. Local expertise means faster service, familiar faces, and installers who live in the same weather you do.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Seward’s climate?

Yes. Seward averages about 77 cm of snow, 838 mm of rain, roughly 84 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
