Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for West Chicago, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Interlock Roofing – Chicago was very professional. They came and got the job done in a neat way, didn't leave any debris afterward, and everything got done as I needed it. Over the years, as I have worked with different people, every once in a while you find a group of folks where you can give them a job to do, walk away, and when you come back, it is going to be done as well as if you did it yourself and these guys performed that way. It was really nice! I thought they did a great job, but if anything, it was pretty close to a year from the time we initiated until it got done, so if that could have been done a little faster that would have been nice.
I will mention the issue regarding the use of gutter guards. If the both the salesman and the roofing foreman knew that the their standard method for a roof over would interfere with the install of gutter guards, the problem could of been addressed. If the old flashing was removed, rather than going over with the new flashing, there would not have been an issue.
Delivery of the material There was some confusion with the initial delivery date of the materials. We were not told that the materials were being delivered, so no one was home. The second incident was with the shipping company, because when they delivered they did not have all of the materials.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in West Chicago
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in West Chicago, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in West Chicago.
Will a metal roof handle West Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?
Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but its oxide layer doesn't degrade through freeze-thaw; it self-heals when scratched. DuPage County experiences about 82 freeze-thaw days per year, where wood shingles crack and asphalt becomes brittle. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels accommodate movement without splitting or curling. Your roof moves with the weather rather than against it, which is why Interlock panels installed in Antarctic research stations endure the same cycle intensity your home faces annually—just more extreme.
How does a metal roof perform with West Chicago's snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofing sheds snow efficiently because the smooth, hard surface doesn't trap moisture the way asphalt does. West Chicago averages about 73 centimeters of snow yearly across roughly 3,051 sunshine hours, so snow melts faster under winter sun. The Alunar coating resists ice bonding better than shingles. If snow guard brackets are installed—a simple add-on—you control slide timing. The real advantage: no ice dams that force water under your eaves, because the panel system drains completely and freeze-thaw cycles don't loosen fasteners like they do with nailed shingles.
Do metal roofs leak in the heavy rain West Chicago gets?
The four-way interlocking panel design, combined with proper underlayment and solid deck installation, creates a water-tight seal. West Chicago receives about 993 millimeters of rain yearly. Unlike asphalt, which degrades under UV and rain exposure, the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted 30 years against degradation. When panels interlock, each joint overlaps—water can't pool. Your existing roof structure acts as the deck; we install directly over it. Heavy rain runs off fast because aluminum doesn't absorb water. Combined with code-compliant flashing per ICC-ES ESR-1790, leaks are a non-issue when the system is installed to specification.
Can a metal roof handle the wind gusts we get here in DuPage County?
Yes, without question. West Chicago experiences gusts reaching approximately 97 kilometers per hour in typical weather events. Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panels don't rely on nails alone; each panel locks to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than stressing individual fasteners. Asphalt shingles fail under sustained wind because nails back out; aluminum panels ride the wind. This is why we guarantee it even during severe weather.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust like steel, and does that matter in Illinois?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. When exposed to air, it develops a microscopic oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath—and if that layer is scratched, it self-heals. Steel roofing rusts because iron oxidizes and flakes away. DuPage County's 993 mm annual rainfall and 73 cm snow bring moisture year-round, creating the exact conditions where steel would corrode. The Alunar coating on both sides of our panels adds 30 years of warranty protection against chalking and fading per ASTM testing. You're not fighting corrosion chemistry; the material simply doesn't do it.
Is a metal tile roof heavy enough to need structural upgrades to my home?
No structural reinforcement needed. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 pounds per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Your home's framing supports asphalt shingles easily; metal tile weighs less. Because it's so light, we install it directly over your existing roof without stripping shingles, which saves labor and disposal costs. The Slate profile is even lighter at 0.41 lb/sq ft. Concrete tile requires engineered beams and sometimes foundation work. Aluminum tile doesn't. That weight advantage means you get the authentic tile appearance, the durability, and a faster install—all without touching your structure.
Will a metal roof reduce my insurance costs after hail damage I've had before?
Metal roofing earns a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available. The warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this rating and offer premium discounts; you'll need to check with yours, but the track record is strong. West Chicago doesn't see frequent hail, but when severe weather hits DuPage County, impact-resistant roofing reduces claims. The Class 4 rating means your roof survives impacts that total other materials. Document the rating when you get quotes; some insurers apply immediate discounts, others recognize it over time as claims don't materialize. Either way, your roof won't leak or degrade from impact—which is what insurance actually cares about.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood shakes?
Virtually none. Asphalt requires periodic sealing, debris removal from granule loss, and nails backed out by wind and temperature swings. Wood shakes need treatment to resist rot and splitting, especially in climates like West Chicago's with 82 freeze-thaw days annually. Metal roofing is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. The Alunar coating resists fading and chalking for 30 years. You don't seal it, don't replace shingles, don't treat it. Rain and snow clean the surface naturally. Gutters need cleaning like any roof, but the metal itself requires nothing. Over a 50-year lifespan, that's decades of no repairs, no preventive work—just an inspection every few years to confirm flashing and fasteners are sound.
What's the difference between a metal roof warranty and a typical asphalt warranty?
The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited, non-prorated for the original owner, and one-time transferable—the next owner gets 50 years from completion. Asphalt warranties are prorated, meaning coverage dollars shrink each year, and end around 25 years. Interlock's warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—material failure, not wear. A non-prorated warranty means you pay nothing for a defect at year 10 or year 40. The transferable term matters: if you sell your home in West Chicago, the buyer inherits a 50-year warranty, which boosts resale appeal. You're essentially buying the last roof you'll install on that home.
Is a metal roof cheaper than asphalt over the life of the roof?
Yes, when you calculate total cost over 50 years. Asphalt costs less upfront but requires replacement every 20-25 years, plus tear-off labor and landfill fees—that's two to three complete reroof cycles. Metal roofing costs more initially but lasts a lifetime with no replacement. Add maintenance: asphalt needs repairs, sealing, and shingle replacement; metal doesn't. Insurance savings on impact-resistant material (UL 2218 Class 4) offset some upfront cost. Over the decades you own your home in DuPage County, you're paying once for metal instead of three times for asphalt plus repairs. The transfer value—your buyer inherits a 50-year warranty—increases resale value. It's not the cheapest first choice; it's the cheapest last choice.
Is a metal roof a good choice for West Chicago’s climate?
Yes. West Chicago averages about 73 cm of snow, 993 mm of rain, roughly 82 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 97 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
