Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Carol Stream, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |

What our customers are saying:
Clarity in final payment
Our new roof is beautiful! We have received so many compliments and inquiries since our Interlock roof was installed four weeks ago. John delivered on his promise with a quality product and set up the stage for what was to come, answering all our early questions and showing us the information we were looking for to make a confident decision. He provided us with installation pictures of previous jobs, the product specifications, color and type of samples, historical data on product performance and much more. Dal from customer service responded quickly with dates when the material was arriving and dates for the installation. After some concerns about having to travel for work and being out of town, Al communicated well, and they worked around my travel schedule my family appreciated this greatly. The roof is not any louder during several of the storms we have had already than before. Despite a few outside temperatures reaching the 80s and sunny, the inside of the house has stayed cool without needing to turn on the AC or ceiling fans. It really is a new experience to walk into our second-level rooms and not have it feel warmer than the lower level. The installation crew did a great job. They told us everything they were doing and answered all of our questions. The fire department even stopped by during the installation to ask what it was! The crew completed the job in 4 days, working over the weekend to finish before the next storm. They left the yard clean every night, and they cleared out the gutters from all of the debris. After watching the team install the new roof safely, we have come to appreciate the craftsmanship that comes with installing this type of roof. The crews are proud of the product, and their care shows in the installation. Putting on this new roof requires a lot of skill, a lot of hours, and experience that I think new owners won’t realize until observing them and going through it. Minimal waste scraps, efficiently making thousands of measurements and metal shaping to perfectly fit all the corners and bends is a testament to the experience our crew, led by Jesse and Sal, had. This Interlock company has been great and there have been so many people referenced here that have worked to provide us a great customer experience. To the whole team, great job, and thank you. We look forward to the many years this roof will continuously perform as it was designed and the many more times we will appreciate the beauty of it.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Carol Stream
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Carol Stream, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Carol Stream.
Will a metal roof hold up through Illinois winters with 82 freeze-thaw cycles a year?
Yes. Aluminum's oxide layer actually strengthens rather than degrades when exposed to freeze-thaw cycling. Unlike asphalt shingles, which crack and curl under repeated temperature swings, or wood shakes, which split, aluminum panels expand and contract uniformly without permanent damage. Carol Stream experiences about 82 freeze-thaw days annually along with roughly 73 cm of snow; Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 certified) and four-way interlocking design distribute stress evenly across the roof surface, so winter's temperature extremes pose no structural risk. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating remains flexible across the full temperature range, maintaining seal integrity season after season.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow and ice dams in the DuPage County climate?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because their smooth, hard surface prevents ice from bonding as aggressively, and the lower weight of Interlock panels (the Slate profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural strain from accumulated snow. With Carol Stream receiving about 73 cm of snow annually and wind gusts reaching 97 km/h, optional snow guards can be installed to manage slide-off safely without overloading your home's structure. The four-way interlocking seam design resists infiltration even when meltwater pools temporarily at panel edges, and the standing seam and shake profiles naturally channel water away from joints, minimizing ice-dam formation at eaves.
Will a metal roof stay secure during Illinois winter storms with gusts over 90 km/h?
Interlock metal roofs are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), well beyond Carol Stream's historical gust speeds of 97 km/h. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together at every edge, distributing wind load across the entire roof plane rather than concentrating stress on fasteners alone. This mechanical interlock system, combined with ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance, means wind uplift that would tear asphalt shingles clean away simply slides over the roof's unified surface. Installation to specification ensures each panel's four perimeter seams engage fully, so even extreme winter storms pose no risk to roof integrity or longevity.
Can a metal roof handle Carol Stream's annual rainfall without leaks?
The four-way interlocking design prevents water penetration through overlapping seams, and each panel's profile (Slate, Shake, Tile, Cedar Shingle, or Standing Seam) channels rainfall outward toward gutters. Carol Stream receives approximately 993 mm of rain annually; Interlock panels are installed over solid deck with underlayment, creating a dual-barrier system that mirrors asphalt roofing's proven water-shedding architecture. The interlocking seams create thousands of mechanical barrier points that even heavy downpours cannot breach. When installed to ICC-ESR-1790 specification, every seam is sealed and every fastener hidden beneath a panel overlap, so water has no path to your attic or living spaces.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing, and does salt air matter in Illinois?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron, the element that oxidizes and creates rust. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a transparent oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, providing permanent corrosion protection. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) coated on both sides with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. While Carol Stream is inland in DuPage County (not subject to coastal salt air), the dual-coat design ensures maximum durability. Steel roofing requires paint maintenance and eventual replacement as iron oxide penetrates; aluminum never degrades this way, making it the only roof material that improves with age.
Can my house support a metal tile roof, or will I need expensive structural reinforcement?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over most existing roofs without engineering modifications. This extraordinary lightness means you avoid the $5,000–$15,000 structural upgrades that traditional tile demands, and most homes can support Interlock tile immediately. The aluminum's minimal load distributes evenly across standard residential framing, even in Carol Stream's climate where about 73 cm of accumulated snow adds temporary weight. This weight advantage is unique to aluminum metal roofing and makes the tile aesthetic accessible to homes that could never structurally accommodate real tile.
Does a metal roof hold up to hail, and could it lower my homeowner's insurance?
Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty specifically covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum construction is more impact-resistant than asphalt, wood, or slate, making claims from hail impact rare or nonexistent. Some insurers offer premium discounts (typically 5–15%) on homes with Class 4-rated metal roofs because loss frequency is demonstrably lower. In Carol Stream's climate, where severe hail is less common than freeze-thaw cycling or heavy snow, the hail protection is an added safety margin. Contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating; many carriers recognize it explicitly in their rating algorithms.
What's the real lifespan of a metal roof, and does the warranty transfer if I sell?
Interlock offers a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty to the original owner covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty is one-time transferable to the next owner for up to 50 years from completion—far longer than asphalt (15–20 years) or wood shake (20–30 years). This durability reflects aluminum's fundamental resistance to the 82 freeze-thaw cycles and 993 mm annual rainfall Carol Stream experiences; the material simply does not degrade the way organic or iron-based roofing does. A metal roof installed today will outlive multiple asphalt replacements, and the 50-year transfer term means your home's next owner inherits major value without re-roofing, making it a final roof investment.
Will a reflective metal roof actually lower my cooling costs in Illinois summers?
energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they reflect a significant portion of the sun's heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt. In Carol Stream's 3,051 annual sunshine hours, this reflectance compounds across summer months, reducing attic and living-space temperatures. Studies show reflective metal roofs lower cooling demand by 10–20% compared to dark asphalt. The CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) rating confirms measurable energy savings. While Illinois winters are cold (mean 10.5°C), the roof's thermal mass means summer gains outweigh winter heating penalties in most homes, especially given Illinois's longer cooling season and rising energy costs.
