Review: May 11, 2017

Our new roof is beautiful! We have received so many compliments and inquiries since our Interlock roof was installed four weeks ago. John delivered on his promise with a quality product and set up the stage for what was to come, answering all our early questions and showing us the information we were looking for to make a confident decision. He provided us with installation pictures of previous jobs, the product specifications, color and type of samples, historical data on product performance and much more. Dal from customer service responded quickly with dates when the material was arriving and dates for the installation. After some concerns about having to travel for work and being out of town, Al communicated well, and they worked around my travel schedule my family appreciated this greatly. The roof is not any louder during several of the storms we have had already than before. Despite a few outside temperatures reaching the 80s and sunny, the inside of the house has stayed cool without needing to turn on the AC or ceiling fans. It really is a new experience to walk into our second-level rooms and not have it feel warmer than the lower level. The installation crew did a great job. They told us everything they were doing and answered all of our questions. The fire department even stopped by during the installation to ask what it was! The crew completed the job in 4 days, working over the weekend to finish before the next storm. They left the yard clean every night, and they cleared out the gutters from all of the debris. After watching the team install the new roof safely, we have come to appreciate the craftsmanship that comes with installing this type of roof. The crews are proud of the product, and their care shows in the installation. Putting on this new roof requires a lot of skill, a lot of hours, and experience that I think new owners won’t realize until observing them and going through it. Minimal waste scraps, efficiently making thousands of measurements and metal shaping to perfectly fit all the corners and bends is a testament to the experience our crew, led by Jesse and Sal, had. This Interlock company has been great and there have been so many people referenced here that have worked to provide us a great customer experience. To the whole team, great job, and thank you. We look forward to the many years this roof will continuously perform as it was designed and the many more times we will appreciate the beauty of it.

Interlock Roofing – Chicago was very professional. They came and got the job done in a neat way, didn't leave any debris afterward, and everything got done as I needed it. Over the years, as I have worked with different people, every once in a while you find a group of folks where you can give them a job to do, walk away, and when you come back, it is going to be done as well as if you did it yourself and these guys performed that way. It was really nice! I thought they did a great job, but if anything, it was pretty close to a year from the time we initiated until it got done, so if that could have been done a little faster that would have been nice.

I will mention the issue regarding the use of gutter guards. If the both the salesman and the roofing foreman knew that the their standard method for a roof over would interfere with the install of gutter guards, the problem could of been addressed. If the old flashing was removed, rather than going over with the new flashing, there would not have been an issue.

Delivery of the material There was some confusion with the initial delivery date of the materials. We were not told that the materials were being delivered, so no one was home. The second incident was with the shipping company, because when they delivered they did not have all of the materials.

They could improve by responding to phone calls. I made ten calls and still don't have any good answers. I'm very dissatisfied! I paid $24,290 and I'm very, very unsatisfied with the roof's performance! Update 1/30/18: The office administrator, Sarah Hamlin, and Allen Gessell gave me nothing but the run-around and I'm very unsatisfied with those two employees.

Connecting the green house to the actual house. It isn't the prettiest of end results. They could also doa recommendation to get a plumber out to connect the lines to the back of the house so that the back looks cleaner.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Wheaton

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Wheaton, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Wheaton.

Will a metal roof hold up through Wheaton's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Wheaton experiences roughly 82 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum's non-corrosive nature means expansion and contraction cycles won't degrade the material or weaken fasteners over time. Unlike asphalt shingles, which become brittle in cold and fail when ice-damming forces occur, roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy retains structural integrity through repeated temperature swings. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) won't crack from thermal stress, and the four-way interlocking panels accommodate movement without loosening fasteners—a critical advantage in northern Illinois winters.

How does Interlock handle heavy snow loads and ice dams in Illinois winters?

Wheaton averages about 73 cm of snow annually, and the exceptionally light weight of Interlock panels—the Slate profile installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft—means snow load capacity is virtually unlimited on standard framing; ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof, not from roof weight. The smooth, interlocking profiles and standing-seam options shed snow and ice far more effectively than dimensional asphalt shingles. Snow guards are available if desired. The non-porous aluminum surface and tight interlocks prevent meltwater from penetrating, even during freeze-thaw-melt cycles common in March and April when daily winds gust to 97 km/h.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel in a climate with winter salt and humidity?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—only iron oxidizes and degrades. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopic oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath and self-heals when scratched. This matters in DuPage County because you're exposed to road salt spray from winter maintenance, industrial pollutants, and moisture fluctuations. Steel roofing requires constant paint maintenance to prevent rust; Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy with Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides needs no repainting or rust treatment over its lifetime. The coating carries a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading, giving you genuine corrosion immunity that asphalt and steel cannot match.

Will hail damage a metal roof, and can it lower my insurance?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This top-tier durability often qualifies homeowners for homeowners insurance discounts because hail claims drop dramatically. Illinois hail events are unpredictable, but a roof rated to absorb the same impact energy as a two-story fall demonstrates proven resilience. The four-way interlocking design distributes impact stress across multiple panels, so isolated strikes don't compromise the seal. Contact your insurance agent with the ESR-1790 evaluation report and UL 2218 Class 4 certification; many carriers recognize metal roofing's superior performance and adjust premiums accordingly.

Can an Interlock metal roof stand up to Wheaton's wind gusts?

Wheaton experiences typical daily winds around 19 km/h with gusts reaching 97 km/h, well within Interlock's 120 mph (193 km/h) wind warranty when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to resist wind uplift by locking adjacent panels together—each seam carries load across multiple fastening points. Unlike asphalt shingles, which can be torn away by gusts, or standing-seam roofs with single-point fastening, Interlock's design prevents creep and separation during storm events. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 documents this performance under IBC/IRC wind load standards, making Interlock a credible choice for Illinois' variable spring and autumn weather.

How long does it take to install Interlock metal roofing, and can it go over my existing roof?

Installation typically takes 3–5 days depending on roof size and complexity; your Interlock installer will confirm the timeline during the site visit. Yes, Interlock installs directly over most existing asphalt or composition roofs without tear-off, because the panels weigh only 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means no structural reinforcement is needed and your home avoids the dust, debris, and labor cost of a tear-off. Your installer will inspect the existing deck for soundness, install a solid substrate if required, and apply underlayment before fastening panels. Installing over existing roofing also shortens project disruption and keeps waste from the landfill.

Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they reflect heat rather than absorb it the way dark asphalt does. Wheaton receives approximately 3051 sunshine hours per year, so reflective coatings compound savings over time. Cool Roof Rating Council testing confirms that lighter Interlock profiles—particularly Aged Copper Penny—bounce solar radiation back to the sky instead of warming your attic. This reduces air-conditioning demand during the roughly 100 annual days warmer than 20°C. Combined with proper attic ventilation, reflective metal roofing typically cuts cooling costs 10–15% compared to asphalt, recovering installation cost through utility savings while delivering a 30-year durable finish.

What maintenance does Interlock metal roofing require in Illinois?

Virtually none beyond occasional gutter cleaning. Asphalt shingles require yearly inspections, algae treatments, and repairs starting year 5–7; cedar and shake shake demand periodic sealing and wood-rot prevention; clay tile cracks in freeze-thaw cycles. Interlock aluminum never rots, never splits, never curls, and never fades (Alunar 70% PVDF coating warranted 30 years against chalking and fading). Rain and snow naturally shed from interlocked panels, and the non-porous aluminum surface resists mold and algae. The CALGreen building standard lists Interlock as reduced-maintenance roofing. In Wheaton's 993 mm annual rainfall and 82 freeze-thaw days, this maintenance-free durability translates directly into lower lifetime ownership costs and freedom from seasonal repairs.

What is the warranty on Interlock metal roofing, and does it transfer if I sell?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—conditions that plague asphalt, wood, and traditional tile. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from installation completion, adding real resale value. This one-time transfer term reflects the durability engineering: roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy with Alunar coating on both sides simply outlasts the typical 30-year asphalt lifecycle. No other roofing material offers non-prorated, lifetime protection for the original buyer, making Interlock a credible choice if you plan to stay in your Wheaton home or care about buyer confidence when you leave.

Is there a local Interlock installer serving Wheaton?

Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Wheaton and DuPage County region since 2001, bringing over two decades of local expertise in Illinois freeze-thaw and seasonal weather challenges. Your installer will assess your roof's existing condition, handle permit coordination, and ensure panels are fastened to specification—critical for achieving the full 120 mph wind warranty and Class 4 hail rating. They'll discuss profile options (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, Standing Seam), color choices optimized for energy, and installation timing to fit your schedule. Contact the local team to schedule a no-obligation site visit and ask questions specific to your home's age, exposure, and condition.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Wheaton’s climate?

Yes. Wheaton averages about 73 cm of snow, 993 mm of rain, roughly 82 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 97 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
