Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Dave Harrison was great!
The only area that I think could have been improved on was the English language skills of the crew. They were great, unbelievably hardworking, and very nice, there were just times when we had to communicate via some form of sign language. I was impressed. Often there's a difference between what you're sold and what is delivered, I believe I got what I was sold and I am very satisfied.
The sales experience was fine.
The installer did not put down an ice and snow underlayment from what I observed - it is a very flimsy sheeting. I have ice forming on the nails and making a wet mess of things. He should have done some basic clean up in the attic prior to departure - took my husband 2.5 hours to clean up the mess.
Still waiting for materials promised for our outbuilding by Michael Baldasari at contract signing meeting. Shyster
While I am happy with the final result,I could never ,in good conscience, recommend anyone to use your company. Customer service,or lack thereof is a glaring weakness.Whenever we attempted to communicate with Jennifer,we were either ignored,or placated.Repeated requests to speak with her supervisor were ignored.Great amounts of our time and money were wasted doing online searches for permits, constructing ladder guards out of my own plywood, putting buckets in the attic to catch drips, cleaning up debris, etc. When we inquired as to what they would be doing for compensation, she told us to submit a receipt for the wood.We just spent $30,000 on a roof and that is how we are treated? I can only hope that the roof holds up and we have no warranty claims, because the thought of dealing with Jennifer Simons is not pleasant.I was also disgusted that the contract absolves Interlock from installation delays even when they are your fault.Nice to hide that in the fine print.
We feel as though the left over materials should have been left on site. We have no idea how much of the materials we paid for were left over. We would like for all left over materials from the main house roof project to be left on site.
They could do a better with communication.
They damaged my screens that belong to my expensive windows. They also cracked some of my siding.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Manchester-by-the-Sea
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
Will a metal roof hold up through Manchester's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw. Your area experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw days per year, which breaks down asphalt shingles and causes wood to split and curl. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without degradation; its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, so salt spray and thermal stress don't compromise it. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels is rated for exactly these conditions. You're looking at a roof that gets tougher as it cycles, not weaker.
How does a metal roof handle the snow load in this area?
Manchester averages about 84 centimeters of snow yearly, and metal roofing sheds it efficiently. The sloped profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and Tile—are engineered to promote melt and drainage while the four-way interlocking seams lock panels together, resisting uplift from wind gusts that reach 130 km/h. Metal's smooth surface prevents ice damming better than asphalt. Optional snow guards keep accumulation in place on steeper slopes if you prefer. The lightweight aluminum (Tile profile at ~0.59 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement needed, even over existing roofs.
Why is aluminum better than steel for a roof near the coast?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Unlike steel roofing, which corrodes in salt air, Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy is protected by a two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both the weather side and underside for extra shield against coastal salt spray. Even if the finish is scratched, aluminum's natural oxide layer self-heals automatically. With about 1065 mm of rain annually here, that salt-laden moisture won't touch bare metal. This is why Interlock panels have been installed on Antarctic research stations and coastal homes for over 25 years.
Can metal roofing really keep water out in heavy rain?
Yes—Manchester gets roughly 1065 millimeters of rain per year, and metal roofing drains it faster than asphalt. The four-way interlocking seams on Interlock panels lock together to shed water laterally before it can pool or seep. Each profile—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Tile—directs water downslope through overlapped seams that work like shingles but without gaps. When installed to spec over solid decking with underlayment (standard practice), the system is as leak-proof as any roof. No sagging, no saturation, no rot like you see in aging asphalt.
Will this roof blow off in coastal wind gusts?
No. Manchester's typical gusts reach 130 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. That interlocking geometry means each panel locks to its neighbors on all four edges—the seams don't separate, and the whole assembly acts as one unified structure. The UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating (the highest impact classification available) also reflects the panel's structural integrity under extreme stress. You're covered whether the wind is steady or gusting.
Do I need to reinforce my house to support a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is required. The Interlock Tile profile weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so most homes support it without modification. Even the heavier Shake profile at ~0.58 lb/sq ft is a fraction of traditional tile weight. This matters in Essex County, where you're dealing with about 84 centimeters of snow annually; a lighter roof means less total load on your framing when that snow accumulates. You can install metal roofing directly over most existing asphalt roofs, saving tear-off costs and keeping old material out of the landfill.
Could a metal roof lower my homeowners insurance in Massachusetts?
Possibly. Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Insurance carriers recognize this durability; some offer discounts for Class 4 roofs because claim risk drops significantly. Contact your agent with the product's UL listing (33876) and ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790). The non-combustible aluminum and Class A fire rating may also qualify you for savings. It's worth asking before you commit.
How much upkeep does a metal roof really need?
Minimal. Asphalt shingles need inspection every few years and replacement within 15–20 years; wood shakes split and curl in freeze-thaw cycles; tile cracks or loosens. Interlock aluminum requires only occasional rinsing to clear salt spray residue (standard for any coastal roof) and clearing debris from valleys. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM standards, so the finish stays stable through about 3100 annual sunshine hours and 76 freeze-thaw cycles. No staining, no splitting, no moss or algae traps. CALGreen verification confirms reduced-maintenance design.
Will a metal roof keep my house cooler in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat rather than absorb it. Solar reflectance reaches up to 0.55 on cooler finishes like Aged Copper Penny, and thermal emissivity is 0.84—meaning the roof reflects sunlight that asphalt shingles would trap as heat. Over a full year with roughly 3100 sunshine hours in this region, that reflection matters. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable cooling gains. In winter, the reflective layer doesn't interfere with passive solar gain through windows. It's a no-trade-off efficiency gain—lower cooling costs without sacrificing warmth when you need it.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?
Yes, over the roof's lifetime. Asphalt costs less initially but needs replacement every 15–20 years; metal roofing, backed by a lifetime limited non-prorated material warranty for the original owner and one-time transferable coverage for 50 years from completion, outlasts multiple asphalt cycles. That means no tear-off labor or landfill disposal repeated three times over 60 years. Guardian Warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and impact loss—the whole range of failures that plague asphalt in freeze-thaw regions like Essex County. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. The last roof you buy pays for itself.
