Review: July 20, 2016

I want to share my experience about getting a new roof with Interlock Roofing. I purchased a house with the knowledge that a new roof was needed. The idea of an expensive reoccurring expense on anywhere from a 15 to a 25-year time period was unsettling. After purchasing my townhouse, one of my goals was to make my house as maintenance-free as possible with the knowledge that in the future, the home may not be owner-occupied. After I had Greg Webber come out and give me an estimate, I took a bit of time to do research and look at quite a few homes with different styles and colors. As an engineer, I was impressed with the material and the commitment that Interlock has to stand by not only the product but also the installation. The thought of my roof either maintaining or appreciating in value over time put my mind at ease, looking forward to the future. After deciding to move forward with Interlock, the decision was what color and style. This was maybe the most difficult part of the decision, and am thankful for Greg, and the patience had with me. I was able to find a time that would be feasible for Greg and another family member to finalize the color and style. I went with the slate and the weathered gray which ended up matching well with the front of the house, which has white and gray in the brick and did not contrast to sharp with the tan of the siding. Due to the original construction of my house, there were some concerns that I had with the roof and the install. When the house was originally constructed, there was only roof vents on one side for ventilation; also, I wanted to remove the Satellite dish that was installed on the chimney and last but not least, the flashing around the chimney was incorrect and did not have a kick out to drain the water into the gutters, and therefore I drained into my garage instead. Jesse did a terrific job of the installation and addressed all of the issues of the original construction, and couldn’t be any happier. Since completion, I have received numerous compliments from neighbors and friends. If I had to install a roof again, there would be no question that I would go with Interlock Roofing again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in New Berlin

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in New Berlin, Wisconsin. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in New Berlin.

Will a metal roof hold up through Wisconsin's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it won't crack, curl, or split like asphalt or wood does. New Berlin experiences roughly 79 freeze-thaw days per year, plus about 88 cm of snow, so your roof endures constant thermal stress. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar® 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against fading) won't degrade in repeated freeze-thaw. The four-way interlocking panels move as one system, so thermal cycling actually works in your roof's favor, not against it.

How does a metal roof handle heavy snow loads and ice dams?

Metal's smooth surface and thermal properties reduce ice dam formation better than asphalt, and the Interlock Shake or Slate profile sheds snow efficiently without trapping it. New Berlin averages about 88 cm of snow annually with 3,128 sunshine hours, so winter sun can melt snow from below—metal's high reflectance (up to 0.55 in cool colors) doesn't retain heat like dark asphalt, reducing uneven melting. Snow guards are optional and install onto the panels if you prefer controlled shedding. The aluminum weighs just 0.58 lb/sq ft (Shake profile), so structural load is never a concern, even with 88 cm on the roof.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel for Wisconsin's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes in steel. Instead, aluminum develops a clear oxide layer that seals itself if scratched, offering passive corrosion protection. The Alunar® 70% PVDF coating (applied both sides) adds a 30-year barrier, critical for a region that sees 822 mm of rainfall and seasonal freeze-thaw. In Wisconsin's humid climate, this dual protection means your roof will outlast the house. Steel roofing in the same conditions would show rust staining within years; aluminum just keeps weathering without degradation.

Can this roof withstand the wind gusts Wisconsin gets in storms?

The four-way interlocking panels lock each sheet to its neighbors—wind has nowhere to get a grip. Interlock Metal Roofing warrants the roof to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and New Berlin's typical wind gusts reach about 96 km/h (60 mph), with rare extremes higher. The interlocking design also means each panel is secured mechanically, not just fastened at edges; a gust that would lift an asphalt shingle simply pushes these panels tighter together. Your insurance company recognizes this engineering—many offer discounts on impact-resistant roofs.

Will my house need reinforcement to support a metal roof?

No—aluminum's weight is one of its key advantages. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which mimics heavy slate or clay tile, weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes can install Interlock over their existing roof without any structural work, saving thousands in labor and engineering. New Berlin builders appreciate this because older homes, especially those with timber framing, avoid costly reinforcement. The ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790) confirms the system meets IBC/IRC code without upgrades, so your contractor can proceed immediately after inspection.

Does hail damage a metal roof, and will insurance cover it?

Interlock Metal Roofing panels earn a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Wisconsin spring and summer storms bring hail occasionally, so this protection matters. The Class 4 rating often qualifies you for homeowner insurance discounts because the risk of water intrusion is minimal. Unlike asphalt shingles that dent and lose granules, aluminum deflects impact without pitting or permanent deformation. Check with your insurer; many will reduce your premium once you show the UL 2218 Class 4 certificate.

Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock offers profiles in finishes with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), reflecting heat that dark asphalt absorbs and traps. With 3,128 annual sunshine hours in New Berlin, that reflection adds up over the season. energy-efficiency testing confirms measurable cooling savings; the Cool Roof Rating Council verifies the performance. You won't need air conditioning running as hard, and the reduction compounds over 30+ years. Dark asphalt can reach 170°F in summer sun; a reflective metal roof stays closer to air temperature.

How long will this roof last and what does the warranty cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for you as the original owner, covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. When you sell, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion. That means a roof installed today is covered through 2074 for the buyer—no other roofing type matches that. The Alunar® coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. Aluminum installed in 1998 at Interlock's Delta, BC facility and coastal salt-air homes are still performing, proving this isn't marketing—it's track record.

How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?

Installation typically takes 2-5 days depending on roof complexity and weather. New Berlin's 822 mm annual rainfall means your contractor plans around the season, but the aluminum panels are lighter and faster to install than asphalt reroof work. Yes, you can install Interlock over most existing roofs—the system doesn't require tear-off and is engineered for retrofit installation. This saves weeks of disruption and avoids landfill waste. Your local Interlock Metal Roofing installer, serving the region since 2001, will inspect your roof structure and advise if any prep work is needed. Most homes skip the tear-off entirely.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes—aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, so at end of life (which won't be for 50+ years), your roof returns to the aluminum supply chain instead of a landfill. Asphalt shingles are replaced every 15-25 years and pile up; aluminum ends that cycle. New Berlin's 822 mm of rain and 88 cm of snow stress asphalt shingles faster than roofs in drier climates, meaning sooner replacement and more waste. Interlock's aluminum, manufactured since 1998, has eliminated millions of tons of shingle scrap. CALGreen and similar sustainability standards recognize metal roofing for reduced maintenance and end-of-life recyclability, cutting your home's environmental footprint across the roof's entire lifecycle.
