Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Edmonton

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Edmonton often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Edmonton may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Edmonton commonly last 50–75+ years, whereas asphalt shingles typically last much less (often 15–25 years) and need earlier replacement. Edmonton’s climate—long, cold, snowy winters with large temperature swings and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, plus occasional summer hail and strong winds—speeds wear on roofing materials but suits metal well because it sheds snow, resists cracking from freeze–thaw and tolerates temperature extremes better than asphalt. Homeowners often choose durable systems to reduce long‑term maintenance, limit ice-dam risk and withstand hail/wind. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and include a lifetime‑limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection and peace of mind in Edmonton’s conditions.
Metal roofs in Edmonton typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but final price varies with roof size, slope, complexity, tear‑off, flashing, skylights and labour. Edmonton’s cold, snowy winters and significant snow loads increase structural and material requirements, and regular freeze–thaw cycles accelerate wear on seams and flashing—both can raise installation costs and specification needs. Because of those local conditions, homeowners often compare options by lifetime value rather than initial price: a durable metal system can reduce future repair and replacement costs and improve resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing positions its products around long‑term ownership value and durability rather than trying to be the lowest‑cost roofing option.
In Edmonton, frequent heavy snowloads and strong freeze–thaw cycles plus occasional hail shape roofing choices. Lifespan: metal roofing commonly lasts over 50 years; asphalt shingles typically last ~15–30 years. Maintenance: metal needs less routine care (occasional seal/fastener checks); asphalt requires more frequent inspection, repair and earlier replacement after freeze–thaw or hail damage. Durability: metal sheds snow, resists ice-dam damage and handles hail and wind better; asphalt is more prone to granule loss, curling and leak risk under repeated freeze–thaw. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower life-cycle cost and fewer replacements — good for homeowners prioritizing durability and long-term protection. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal in Edmonton because they combine >50‑year longevity, strong weather resistance and architectural curb appeal for owners seeking lasting performance.
Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Edmonton, AB? This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs fitted over solid decking don’t sound like barn roofs; the sheathing, attic cavity, insulation and ceiling all dampen rain noise. Local factors—heavy winter snow and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that affect roof assemblies—make solid continuous decking and proper flashings important in Edmonton; these conditions also increase wear on roofs if not detailed correctly. Installation quality, underlayment and ventilation affect perceived sound. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound similar to asphalt or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Edmonton. Metal roofing reflects sunlight to reduce summer heat gain, but overall energy performance depends on the full roof assembly: insulation levels, air tightness and ventilation control winter heat loss and moisture. Edmonton has long, sunny summers and cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and significant snow loads, so durability and snow‑shedding matter too. Homeowners compare materials mainly to lower heating bills, improve year‑round comfort and protect long‑term value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance by combining reflective finishes with robust roof assembly details.
Edmonton’s climate brings long, cold winters with substantial snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, plus summer hail and occasional strong winds—local factors that stress roofing systems and create heavy snow loads and impact hail resistance for materials when choosing a roof. Metal roofing typically performs very well in wind, sheds snow quickly, and resists rot and freeze–thaw damage better than many organic coverings; impact resistance varies by panel profile and gauge, and some systems are engineered specifically for hail protection. Performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability. Homeowners compare resilience because local snow loads, freeze–thaw cycles and hail frequency directly affect lifespan, repair costs and insurance. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, improved hail protection and wind resistance, making them a strong option for Edmonton conditions when properly specified and installed.
Edmonton’s cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and occasional summer hail and strong winds place extra stress on roofing materials, increasing corrosion risk if metals aren’t suited to those conditions. Metal roofing performance depends on the metal: steel can rust without proper coatings, while aluminum and some coated steels resist corrosion much better. Aluminum performs especially well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide layer. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to reduce maintenance, avoid leaks, and extend service life under Edmonton’s freeze–thaw and hail/wind exposure. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, making them a solid choice for local conditions.
Q: Are metal roofs low‑maintenance for homes in Edmonton? A: Yes—metal roofing is a durable, low‑maintenance option well suited to Edmonton’s long winters, but not maintenance‑free. Heavy snow loads and repeated freeze–thaw cycles can stress fasteners, flashings and seals, so inspect after spring thaw and following major storms. Periodically clear debris, keep gutters and downspouts free, and check flashing and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) for gaps or corrosion. Seasonal leaf buildup and ice can accelerate wear around edges and joints. Compared with asphalt, metal resists rot and shedding, and often requires only occasional touch‑ups or sealant/fastener checks, making it a strong choice for local conditions.
Short answer: Yes — in Edmonton a durable, low‑maintenance metal roof can increase your home’s value. Buyers particularly prize roofs that handle heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles common here, which raise maintenance and ice‑dam risk. Metal roofs shed snow, resist ice damage and often outlast asphalt, which improves buyer confidence. Premium metal finishes boost curb appeal, though architectural style and neighbourhood fit matter. Occasional summer hail and strong winds also make impact‑resistant metal appealing to buyers. Interlock Metal Roofing offers slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing‑seam profiles in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper for a durable, buyer‑friendly upgrade.
As a homeowner comparing roofing materials in Edmonton, Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when custom solar brackets are installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Edmonton’s long snowy winters and freeze‑thaw cycles, plus occasional hail and high winds, increase structural and attachment stresses on roofs, so roof lifespan matters when adding solar panels. Choose long‑lasting roofing materials because a durable roof reduces future panel removal and re‑installation costs. Plan for solar when replacing your roof so mounting points and fastening methods are integrated. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and engineered to support solar mounting solutions with appropriate brackets.

Edmonton, AB Interlock Metal Roofing Review (Installed 2014)

April 26, 2026

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

April 24, 2026

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

April 23, 2026

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

April 22, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

April 19, 2026

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

April 15, 2026

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

April 14, 2026

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof & Snow Guards Review — Owen Sound, ON (Installed 2017)

April 13, 2026

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Burnaby, BC Metal Roofing (Installed 2024)

April 13, 2026

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

April 12, 2026

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Willowbrook, IL Metal Roof Review — Interlock Roofing (Installed 2016)

April 11, 2026

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!

I love my Interlock roof. It was installed about 7 years ago. Recently had indication that a little roof leak was occurring and I called Interlock up. Customer service was excellent and they promptly got a technician out to see what the issue was. Ivan was efficient and knowledgeable and identified the issue and fixed it quickly. He checked over the entire roof to make sure there were no other issues. I’m very happy with the product and the service.
