One of those lucky days that I followed a link from a Facebook post. We had immediate follow up and then an appointment scheduled quickly and conveniently with Derek. We had done our homework and we were impressed with Derek's information and approach. Our installation was scheduled quickly. The installers were excellent, personable, professional and very tidy. No mess left behind. After the first winter we are very happy. I would recommend for other to consider more roof guards. Although we are protected over doorways there were mountains from the slide in our garden and on back patio. Not critical but something to consider. Services: Roof installation

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Ottawa

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Ottawa often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Ottawa may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

How long will a metal roof last in Ottawa, ON?

Metal roofs in Ottawa commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last 15–25 years. Ottawa’s cold, snowy winters produce heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofing materials, and warm summers with UV exposure plus occasional hail and wind events can accelerate wear. Climate projections indicate freeze–thaw cycles may increase in the National Capital Region, which speeds deterioration of lower‑grade roofs. Homeowners often choose durable metal systems for longer service life, lower maintenance, better snow/ice shedding and improved resistance to wind and impact compared with asphalt. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.

How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Ottawa, ON?

Short answer: Metal roofs cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, reflecting material quality and installation labour. Final price in Ottawa depends on roof size, slope, complexity (hips/valleys), tear‑off, flashing, skylights and labour rates. Local factors: Ottawa’s heavy snowfall and ice storms plus increasing winter freeze–thaw cycles raise snow‑load, ice‑dam and thermal‑movement concerns—these affect underlayment, ventilation and fastening choices and can increase installation costs. Because winter installs can be more labour‑intensive and scheduling-sensitive in Ottawa, timing and contractor availability also influence cost. Many homeowners compare lifetime value rather than initial price: durable metal systems often reduce future repair and replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value rather than competing as a low‑cost option.

Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Ottawa home?

Is metal roofing worth it compared to asphalt shingles in Ottawa? Lifespan: asphalt shingles typically 15–25 years; quality metal lasts 40–70 years. Maintenance: asphalt needs periodic shingle replacement and can require cleaning for algae/moss; metal is lower‑maintenance and sheds snow and ice more readily. Durability: metal resists wind, hail and repeated freeze–thaw cycling better; asphalt can deteriorate faster under heavy snow loads. Long‑term value: metal has higher upfront cost but lower lifecycle costs and longer service life—good value if you plan to stay long term. Local influence: Ottawa’s heavy snow, frequent freeze–thaw cycles and trend toward warmer, wetter summers increase ice‑dam risk and shingle wear, so durability and snow/ice performance matter for material choice. Homeowners prioritising durability and long‑term protection often choose metal; Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal for long‑term performance and architectural curb appeal.

Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Ottawa?

This is a common myth: modern residential metal roofs aren’t like old barn roofs. When installed over solid decking, metal roofing is quiet—rain sounds are comparable to other roofing materials. Factors such as insulation, attic space, underlayment and the overall roof assembly significantly influence perceived sound, and a high-quality installation reduces vibration and noise transmission. Poor fastening or mounting over open purlins can increase noise, so installer experience matters. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound much the same as asphalt shingles or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems designed to perform and minimise rain noise.

How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Ottawa?

Metal roofing can be energy efficient in Ottawa. Metal panels often reflect sunlight, which can reduce summer cooling loads, but overall performance depends on the complete roof assembly — underlayment, insulation, air barriers and ventilation all influence heat flow and moisture control. In Ottawa’s climate of cold winters and warm summers, reflectivity helps in summer but insulation and airtight details are more important for limiting winter heat loss. That’s why homeowners researching roof replacement consider energy efficiency: to lower heating and cooling bills, improve indoor comfort, reduce condensation and ice-dam risk, extend roof service life and boost resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.

How does metal roofing in Ottawa, ON withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?

Ottawa sees long, snowy winters, freezing rain, strong winds and occasional severe storms and hail—conditions that stress roofs. Because freeze–thaw cycles and heavy snow/ice loads increase the risk of ice dams and structural strain, proper design is essential. Metal roofing sheds snow and ice, resists wind uplift when correctly attached, and generally offers superior impact resistance to hail versus asphalt, but actual performance varies. Performance depends on: - roofing system design (slope, seams, underlayment) - installation quality (fastening, flashing, ventilation) - material durability (gauge, coating, finish) Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to lower repair costs, reduce water ingress and protect insurance costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance.

Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Ottawa's wet climate?

Metal roofing performance in Ottawa, ON depends largely on the metal used. Some metals corrode or rust more readily than others, so material choice affects longevity, maintenance and appearance. Aluminium performs especially well in wet or coastal environments because it naturally resists corrosion and does not rust like steel. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance when selecting roofing to reduce long‑term repair costs, prevent leaks or staining, and protect home value—especially in Ottawa’s freeze–thaw and snow conditions. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, providing a durable, low‑maintenance option suited to the local climate and long‑term reliability.

How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Ottawa?

Metal roofing is generally low maintenance and highly durable, making it a popular choice in Ottawa’s climate. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should perform periodic inspections—especially after storms and in spring and fall—to check for debris build‑up, blocked gutters, loose or damaged flashing, and issues around penetrations such as vents, chimneys and skylights. Clear leaves and branches promptly, ensure gutters and downspouts drain properly, and tighten or reseal fasteners and flashings if needed. Weather events, ice and seasonal debris can cause localized damage or accelerate wear. With occasional checks and basic upkeep, metal roofs offer long service life and low ongoing labour and repair needs.

How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Ottawa?

In Ottawa, ON, metal roofing can increase home value because buyers favour durable, low‑maintenance roofs that reduce future costs. Premium roofing materials also enhance curb appeal, especially on streets with higher‑end homes, and a long lifespan improves buyer confidence at resale. Neighbourhood architectural style matters — metal that mimics traditional materials fits better in heritage or character areas and can preserve or boost perceived value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles to suit local styles, including slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam, and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper. Proper installation, colour choice and compatibility with nearby homes determine how much value is added, so pick a profile that complements your Ottawa neighbourhood.

Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Ottawa?

Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing Systems in Ottawa are compatible with solar when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Ottawa’s cold, snowy winters (high annual snowfall) and frequent freeze–thaw cycles can affect roof load and flashing integrity, so choose materials and mounts rated for snow loads and ice movement. Roof lifespan matters: install solar on a long-lasting roof to avoid panel removal for replacement. When comparing materials, favour durable, low-maintenance options — Interlock systems are designed to be solar-compatible and support engineered mounting solutions, and Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. supplies custom brackets to ensure secure installation.
