Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We recently had extra snow guards added to our roof. The workers that showed up, were professional and dedicated, it was Saturday evening, they were all smiles and very polite.
This company was willing to answer all my questions and concerns. Also when on site the team did a great job and were very polite. This is important aspect because I have had workers before who were swearing very loudly with no consideration for our presence in our home. This team was great and cleaned up really well after the job. The roof looks great and we highly recommend them.
The entire experience was handled professionally. Great job communicating through the process. Team that did the install were efficient, they kept the site tidy and worked hard everyday. Positive experience.
Extremely happy with the service. The job was done on time, the workers were very polite, very approachable and the site was kept spotlessly clean. We would definitely recommend this Maritime Permanent Roofing.
Staff were very professional and friendly. After contacting Chris with our requirements he’s was quick to respond with plan in hand and a way ahead. The new roof was started and completed very quickly. All work was completed in only 1 day and the yard was left spotless at the end of the day. His roofing staff were extremely hard working and very friendly and professional, didn’t stop from start to finish in order to have the job done by end of a long day!! I would highly recommend Maritime Permanent Roofing to anyone that wants or requires a new roof.
The process of getting the quote to actually having the roof on was easy. I am very happy with the product. It looks great. The install team did a great job. They kept the site clean and worked consistently to complete the contract. No complaints at all.
Awesome job by an awesome team of people. Thanks a million! ❤️

Excellent product, very competent and professional staff and installation crew. So happy I decided to go with Maritime Permanent Roofing for my roof. A very satisfied customer.
Quality product. Project management was disciplined. Installation team was very competent and professional. It was a job well done.
We hired Maritime Permanent Roofing (an Interlock Roofing company) to install a new metal roof. A lot of metal roofs that get installed are steel "barn-board" roofs that are screwed down. If you can't see the fasteners, you've installed a better quality roof called "standing seam". So we were trying to decide between standing seam and metal shingles. In the end, we decided we liked the look of shingles better, so we went that route. What differentiates MPR from other roofers is that they use aluminum (which oxidizes with a protective coating, rather than rusting, like steel). Living in a province where you're not too far from the ocean in any direction, this was important to us. So our first contact with the company was with "Greg" who handles the sales. He was quick to give us a quote (for "slate" shingles in a "musket grey", one of 9 colour options). I'm not going to lie to you, it wasn't cheap. We live in a large bungalow, so with a 5000+ sq.ft roof the costs add up quickly. Asphalt shingles would have been less than half the price, but we knew we were installing solar panels, so asphalt was not an option (asphalt shingles just don't last like they used to... they are made more cheaply, using less asphalt and more fiberglass). So we signed the contract and were given a start date of 2 months out. Our next contact was with "Chris" (Greg's brother... yes, it's a family business). He is the operations manager. Both Greg and Chris were laid-back and easy to talk to and generally seemed like nice/good people. I'm always happy when I hire good people. Chris showed up the first week of November to deliver all the materials to site and he informed me that the install crew would arrive on the weekend to start the job. So on Sunday Nov.7th "Janner", the installation foreman, and his crew showed up. They were a crew of 6 men!! As we have a large complicated roof with multiple dormers, many ridges and valleys and multiple facets with several different roof pitches, it wasn't a job for amateurs. Janner and company were very friendly and willing to answer questions openly, and they were very professional. Everyone in the crew had been formally trained by the parent Interlock company (which is based in British Columbia) and they had been installing Interlock Roofing for over 10 years, so they knew what they were doing. Luckily, the weather was good (for the most part) and they finished the job in 4 days. We are quite happy with our new roof, which has now prepared us to install solar panels. Greg, Chris and Janner were all good people and all professionals. I highly recommend MPR if you are considering installing a metal roof. I'm quite sure an aluminum shingle roof will outlast a steel barn-board roof, but I will update this review in a couple/few years to report on how the roof is holding up and whether or not there are any leaks. ps: Interlock Roofing is a Canadian company, who designs and manufactures their own aluminum shingles, they even make their own ringed aluminum nails.
The quality of the product is excellent and the install team was fabulous! They did the job quickly, cleanly, and were very easy to do business with. I would highly recommend them.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Port Hawkesbury
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Port Hawkesbury.
Does metal roofing handle Cape Breton's heavy snow and ice buildup?
Yes—Interlock metal panels are engineered to shed snow and ice effectively, preventing the dangerous accumulation that damages traditional roofing. Port Hawkesbury receives about 212 cm of snow annually, and the lightweight aluminum design (Shingle at just 0.41 lb/sq ft) carries that load without structural risk. The four-way interlocking system creates a unified surface that resists ice-dam formation. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle in freeze-thaw cycles (Port Hawkesbury experiences roughly 85 such days yearly), aluminum flexes with temperature swings without cracking or curling. Snow guards can be added if steeper profiles are preferred for faster shedding.
Why does aluminum roofing outlast asphalt in a freeze-thaw climate like ours?
Aluminum's molecular structure allows it to expand and contract through temperature cycles without degrading, while asphalt becomes brittle and cracks over time. Port Hawkesbury's mean temperature of 7.4°C and approximately 85 annual freeze-thaw days create the exact conditions that shorten asphalt life to 15–20 years. Aluminum roofing maintains its integrity through this cycling because it contains no binders that dry out or adhesives that weaken when repeatedly frozen and thawed. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, protects the underlying alloy from salt spray during winter storms while the material itself simply endures.
Can metal roofing withstand Port Hawkesbury's winter winds and coastal gusts?
Interlock panels resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—well above Port Hawkesbury's typical gusts, which reach about 140 km/h during severe weather. The four-way interlocking system creates a unified membrane where each panel locks mechanically to its neighbors, eliminating the weak points where shingles lift, peel, or tear. Standard asphalt roofing becomes vulnerable at sustained winds above 75 mph; the warranty on Interlock explicitly covers 120 mph conditions, giving homeowners confidence that winter storms and the occasional nor'easter will not compromise the roof. This mechanical interlock design is why coastal installations worldwide—from maritime homes to an Antarctic research station—depend on this system.
Will metal roofing reduce my insurance premiums after hail or impact damage?
Metal roofing's superior impact rating often qualifies for insurance discounts, and Interlock's UL 2218 Class 4 rating—the highest available—demonstrates durability that insurers recognize. The warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches, so homeowners are protected even in severe storms. Many insurers offer reduced premiums for non-combustible, Class A-rated roofs because they reduce risk; aluminum's non-flammable nature (ICC-ES ESR-1790 certified) appeals to underwriters. While individual policies vary, the combination of impact resistance, fire rating, and documented durability makes Interlock an attractive choice for insurers. Contact Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. to discuss your specific insurer's discount eligibility.
Do I need to reinforce my home's structure before installing a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than traditional clay or concrete tile. This means the roof can install directly over most existing asphalt or wood roofing without additional framing or support beams. Port Hawkesbury's 212 cm of annual snow creates a meaningful load, but aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio allows it to handle that snow safely without stressing the structure the way heavy slate or tile would. The lightweight design reduces installation costs and simplifies the retrofit process—Maritime Metal Roofing can often complete the job by installing over your current roof rather than tearing off and rebuilding.
Does metal roofing handle Port Hawkesbury's 1200 mm of annual rain without leaking?
Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking design creates an overlapping, self-draining surface that sheds water faster than traditional roofing. Port Hawkesbury's roughly 1196 mm of rain per year is managed effectively by the panel geometry—water flows downslope through interlocked seams rather than pooling. The mechanical interlock means fasteners are hidden and recessed, eliminating the small holes and penetration points where conventional roofs develop leaks over time. Proper installation by experienced crews (Maritime Metal Roofing has served the region since 2007) ensures fasteners are sealed and flashing is correctly positioned. The lifetime limited warranty covers leaks, giving homeowners confidence that heavy maritime rainfall will not compromise the roof.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost if I'm planning to stay in Port Hawkesbury long-term?
A metal roof is the last roof you will buy, making the higher initial cost offset by 40–60 years of durability. Asphalt roofing typically lasts 15–20 years in Port Hawkesbury's climate (heavy snow at 212 cm annually, 85 freeze-thaw cycles yearly), requiring 2–3 replacements over a homeowner's lifetime. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty for the original owner—plus a 50-year transferable warranty for subsequent buyers—means you replace it once instead of three or four times. Current regional promotion offers interest-free payments for 3 months and savings of at least $2,499 on installation. Over 50 years, the cost-per-year of a metal roof is typically lower than asphalt, ignoring maintenance, repairs, and disposal costs for old shingles.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or tile?
Interlock metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance. Unlike asphalt, which requires periodic inspections, repairs, and sealing (and becomes vulnerable in Port Hawkesbury's 85 annual freeze-thaw cycles), aluminum does not crack, curl, or degrade. Unlike clay or slate tile, which require mortar repointing and individual replacement, metal panels are integral. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so the roof remains protected even after three decades. Annual inspections for debris and gutter cleaning apply to all roofs, but metal requires no chemical treatment, moss removal, or asphalt-specific upkeep. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden, making it attractive to homeowners who want a set-it-and-forget-it roof in a wet, snowy climate.
Can I get the look of slate, cedar shake, or tile in a metal roof for my Port Hawkesbury home?
Yes—Interlock offers five authentic profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile. Each replicates traditional materials' visual character while providing metal's durability. Slate and Cedar Shingle suit Cape Breton's heritage architecture, while Mediterranean Tile and Shake offer distinctive curb appeal. Standing Seam delivers a clean, modern aesthetic. All profiles are manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998 and installed worldwide, from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station, proving durability across environments. The lightweight construction (Shake at ~0.58 lb/sq ft) means any profile installs without structural changes. Maritime Metal Roofing can discuss which style complements your home's architecture and local neighborhood character.
