Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Timberlea, Nova Scotia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
What a beautiful roof!! I love it, The slate colour and look, add so much to our home. The quality and installation went great, despite bad weather.I would highly recommend this company and the quality product they use.
Attention to detail
The product is definitely better than asphalt or fiberglass shingles. The schedule should have been confirmed without me having to escalate to head office. The job site clean up was disappointing, we picked up over 100 nails and various debris.
At the end of the job, we provided the workers with a survey/comment sheet to pass along to Interlock Roofing. I believe that Interlock Roofing should provide customers with a stamped envelope and ask customers to mail their survey/comment sheet. We had a great experience with our installers, but if someone didn't have a great experience they may not have wanted to give their survey/comment sheet to the people they were evaluating. Just a thought.
I have recommended them to a friend. The installers can let us know their names. I think it is important to know who it is that is at your home.
Interlock Roofing did an excellent job on my project.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Timberlea
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Timberlea, Nova Scotia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Timberlea.
How does a metal roof handle Timberlea's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because aluminum's smooth surface and thermal properties prevent ice dams from forming. Timberlea receives about 149 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 89 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles over time. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels remain dimensionally stable across these temperature swings, and the lightweight design (Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed even as snow accumulates. Snow guards are available if you prefer gradual shedding.
Why does aluminum never rust, and why does that matter in Nova Scotia's climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopically thin oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched, protecting the metal beneath indefinitely. In coastal and maritime regions like the Halifax area, steel roofs corrode quickly, but Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum (ASTM B209) has been installed on salt-air homes for over 25 years without deterioration. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both panel sides adds 30-year protection against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured), making it ideal for Timberlea's ~1286 mm annual rainfall and salty air exposure.
Can a metal roof withstand Timberlea's wind and coastal gusts?
Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Timberlea's typical gusts reach about 131 km/h, well within this rating. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together mechanically, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than relying on individual fasteners. This engineering—verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025)—means your roof stays secure even during the Atlantic storms that produce sustained coastal winds. No nail-pop failures or uplift.
Does metal roofing resist hail, and could it lower my insurance premiums?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum construction often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because hail damage claims are virtually eliminated. While Timberlea's hail risk is lower than inland prairie regions, the rating provides peace of mind during severe weather. Many insurers recognize metal roofing's durability and offer rate reductions; contact your provider with the UL 2218 Class 4 specification to explore savings.
Is metal roofing really cheaper than replacing asphalt shingles every 15 years?
Over a roof's full lifespan, metal roofing costs less than the asphalt-replacement cycle. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years in climates like Timberlea's (with ~89 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 149 cm snow), meaning most homeowners re-roof twice in 40 years. Interlock's lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner covers rusting, cracking, curling, and impact loss—then transfers to the next owner for 50 years from completion. One roof installed today covers your home for life, eliminating disposal costs and the labor expense of multiple tear-offs. Current regional financing offers interest-free payments for 3 months and savings of at least $2499.
Will I need to reinforce my roof structure to support a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate Shingle weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake ~0.58 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile—which replicates the look of heavy clay or concrete—is about 96% lighter at ~0.59 lb/sq ft. Traditional tile weighs 10–15 lb/sq ft, requiring expensive structural upgrades; aluminum allows installation directly over most existing roofs. This lightweight advantage (roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum) saves tens of thousands in reinforcement labor and materials while preserving your home's original framing design.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shingles?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance. Unlike asphalt shingles that crack, curl, and lose granules under Timberlea's ~89 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 1286 mm of rain, aluminum panels remain dimensionally stable and do not deteriorate. Unlike wood shakes that split, rot, and harbor moss in humid maritime climates, Interlock's non-porous aluminum surface sheds debris and moisture. Gutters still need clearing, but the roof itself—with its Alunar 70% PVDF finish (30-year warranty)—never requires sealing, painting, or repairs. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance, lowering your long-term ownership costs.
Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, and Interlock panels can be recycled indefinitely without degradation. By contrast, asphalt shingles end the tear-off cycle: millions of tons go to landfills yearly because recycling asphalt is economically difficult. Over 40 years, a typical home re-roofing twice generates 2–3 tons of landfill waste; one Interlock installation produces none. At end of life, your metal roof enters the aluminum recycling stream—the same process that recycles beverage cans. Choosing metal roofing actively reduces Halifax Region's waste footprint while supporting circular-economy manufacturing (Interlock has been manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998).
How long does metal roof installation take, and can it be installed over my existing roof?
Installation timeline typically spans 3–7 days depending on roof size and complexity; Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. (serving the region since 2007) can provide a precise schedule during your site visit. Because Interlock panels weigh so little—Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft versus asphalt at ~2.5 lb/sq ft—installation over existing roofs is often feasible, avoiding costly tear-off labor and landfill fees. The lightweight aluminum means faster fastening and no structural strain. Your installer will assess your current roof's condition and recommend the best approach; many Timberlea homes proceed with overlay installation, cutting both timeline and waste.
Is a metal roof fire-resistant, and does that matter in Nova Scotia?
Interlock aluminum roofing is non-combustible and available with Class A fire rating (the highest classification). While wildfire risk in the Halifax Region is lower than inland areas, Class A protection provides peace of mind if you're near wooded areas or during dry summers when Timberlea's ~2646 annual sunshine hours can elevate fire danger. Non-combustible aluminum meets ICC-ES ESR-1790 code requirements and insurance underwriting standards; some policies recognize the fire-safety advantage. Class A rating also supports mortgage financing and resale confidence, giving you long-term asset protection.
