Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Sarnia, Ontario
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
The project stalled because of the interface between the solar company and the interlock installers. It took the installers almost a whole month to come back and finish the job.The communication between interlock, installers and us was very poor.Recommend that you encourage people with solar panels to use your preferred solar contractor to avoid these type of issues.
Considering we were told that installation would be completed by mid Nov and it wasn't done until mid January, the scheduling needs to be improved upon. My wife believes the installation crew urinated on our fence gate. Also, their vehicle left a stain on our driveway so a decent running vehicle should be used in the future.
I think they could improve on the scheduling and making sure they do what the contract stated.
This was a steep roof and with only one employee on the job it took much longer than necessary. He took all appropriate safety precautions and wore safety gear but an extra person would have been safer and three times faster. Although not part of the original agreement, I requested some eave troughs to be replaced and gutter guards installed. I am still waiting for this work.
They need to know how important communication is. They need to stay in touch with the customer more often. I am very happy, so far, with the job they did.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sarnia
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Sarnia, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Sarnia.
Will a metal roof handle Sarnia's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. Sarnia experiences approximately 80 freeze-thaw days per year, a cycle that degrades asphalt, wood shake, and concrete tile. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (warranted 30 years) prevents moisture penetration that accelerates freeze-thaw damage in other materials. The four-way interlocking design flexes with thermal movement while maintaining its watertight seal.
How does a metal roof perform with Sarnia's annual snowfall?
Metal roofs are ideal for snowy regions because they shed snow and ice faster than asphalt or tile, and the smooth surface resists ice damming. Sarnia receives about 85 cm of snow annually across roughly 80 freeze-thaw days, creating conditions where ice buildup and thermal cycling damage traditional roofing. Interlock's lightweight aluminum profiles (the Shingle weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft) handle heavy wet snow without structural reinforcement, and optional snow guards can be added if retention is preferred. The interlocking panels stay watertight even as snow shifts.
Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Sarnia's wind gusts?
The four-way interlocking system is engineered to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), far exceeding Sarnia's typical wind gusts, which reach about 106 km/h. Each panel locks on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This design is verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) and backed by a warranty that covers wind-driven rain and uplift. For a region where sustained winds average 22 km/h with occasional severe gusts, this interlocking architecture provides durable, fail-safe protection.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes in steel. Instead, aluminum forms a protective oxide layer that is self-healing: when the surface is scratched, the oxide reforms automatically. Sarnia's 800 mm of annual rainfall and coastal-influenced humidity make corrosion resistance critical. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, creating a dual-layer defense against moisture and extending service life indefinitely without rust concerns.
Can my home's structure handle a metal roof without reinforcement?
Yes—aluminum's light weight eliminates the need for structural reinforcement. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates heavy concrete or clay tile, weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than the traditional materials it mimics. This allows installation directly over most existing roofs, avoiding costly tear-off and structural upgrades. Sarnia homes built for asphalt or even older wood roofs can support Interlock panels without modification. The Shake profile weighs 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Slate just 0.41 lb/sq ft, making metal roofing feasible on older homes where structural reinforcement would be prohibitively expensive.
Does hail damage metal roofing, and will my insurance recognize it?
Interlock aluminum roofing holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest hail classification available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible, impact-resistant material often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because it reduces claim frequency and severity. Sarnia's climate includes occasional severe weather; the robust impact rating provides both physical protection and documented proof of durability for insurers. Class 4 rating means the roof withstands impacts that would crack or perforate asphalt, wood, or traditional tile, making it an attractive option for insurers evaluating long-term risk.
What warranty covers a metal roof, and how long will it actually last?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, giving future buyers decades of documented protection and adding resale value. Interlock has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998, with installations ranging from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica, demonstrating real-world durability far exceeding typical roof cycles. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty (ASTM D4214/D2244) separately guarantees color and gloss retention, so homeowners in Sarnia gain both material longevity and cosmetic assurance over multiple ownership periods.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or tile?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no seasonal cleaning, no gutter debris removal from decomposing shingles, no moss treatment. Asphalt roofs shed granules into gutters throughout their life; wood shake requires regular inspections for rot and insect damage; clay or concrete tile can crack and needs individual replacement. Sarnia's 800 mm annual rainfall and 80 freeze-thaw cycles accelerate asphalt degradation and wood rot, but aluminum is inert to both. Interlock's CALGreen-verified design reduces maintenance burden, and the smooth, non-porous surface sheds dirt and algae naturally. Over 50 years, the maintenance cost difference alone justifies the metal roof investment.
Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Sarnia, and how experienced are they?
Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. has served the region since 1998, the same year the company began manufacturing aluminum panels in Delta, BC. This means your local installer brings 26+ years of regional experience and direct access to the manufacturer. They understand Sarnia's specific climate—the 85 cm annual snowfall, 106 km/h wind gusts, and 80 freeze-thaw cycles—and design installations accordingly. The current promotion offers interest-free payments for 3 months and savings of at least $2499 on installation. A local, long-established installer ensures proper four-way interlocking technique, timely service, and warranty support without intermediaries.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more initially but becomes the last roof you'll buy, making it the lower total cost of ownership. Asphalt roofs last 15–25 years in Sarnia's climate (frequent freeze-thaw, 80 cycles annually, heavy rain and snow accelerate deterioration); metal roofs last 50+ years. Over a typical 50-year ownership, asphalt requires 2–3 replacements, each tear-off creating landfill waste, labor, and disposal costs. Interlock's Guardian Warranty (lifetime for original owner, 50-year transfer) eliminates future replacement risk. Add energy savings from reflective coatings (up to 0.55 solar reflectance) and potential insurance discounts from Class 4 hail rating, and the metal roof investment recovers its premium through avoided replacements and operational savings.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Sarnia’s climate?
Yes. Sarnia averages about 85 cm of snow, 800 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 106 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
