| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Interlock Roofing could not have done anything to improve, they did a fanatic job. It was a very positive experience. The installers did a great job. John called to let us know when he would come and he showed up when he said he would.
Last summer I realized I was in the need of a new roof on my old home which was built in 1876. I was hoping I could find a roof that accentuated the uniqueness and beauty of my old farm-style house. I always dreamed of owning a home with a metal roof, so I thought, well, let’s give this a look and see if it is an option. After searching for roofers and making some calls I found no one in my area offering metal roofs, needless to say, I became discouraged. Then, one day, on Facebook, I happened to see an ad with Midwest Roofing/Interlock Roofing showing the exact type of roof I was looking for!! I was so excited and called the number and was able to have an appointment arranged that very weekend. John came out, did some measuring, got up in my attic, then we sat and had a long, very informative discussion. John was extremely patient with my numerous questions and was able to explain things to me in layman’s terms, as I am not adept in the construction business, at all. So, the nitty gritty…I was originally thinking standing seam going into this whole project but then out came the slate look and oh my, that was it…The roof I had been looking for. It was exactly what needed to be on top of my house!!! And the black color just spoke to me…. John agreed!! Nowhere else had I ever seen a roof like the one I was about to have put on my beloved home. So, the price, while I knew a metal roof was going to cost more, I was looking more for security and peace of mind. I am a single parent of a child on the autism spectrum. I knew that I did not want to deal with roof issues in the future, the struggle to get a roofer to come to fix their problem, and the thought of having to replace it all over again just a few years down the road. Nope, the extra cost of this one-and-done roof was well worth it to me…after all, how do you put a price tag on peace of mind? And there aren’t many things in this world nowadays that can give you that. So, I signed the contract… The delivery…. how exciting…all these boxes lined up in my driveway…it was getting real!! Installation begins. Never in my lifetime have I met such an amazing installation crew, headed by Jesse. These guys worked tirelessly on transforming my average-looking home into the WOW home on the block. They took great care in working around my cupola and rock chimney, making sure everything was sealed where it needed to be, even reinforcing the cupola as it had been up there for so many years. These guys are not just installers, they are truly artists, and the pride in what they do shines in their workmanship. Even the care in the cleanup was amazing…very impressed. Any company can put out an amazing product, but for that product to remain amazing, that company has to have professional team members working with the customers…that is what you will get if you go with Interlock. Not just a stand-out product but a stand-out crew from sales, scheduling, and installation…it’s the whole package.
There were a few discrepancies from what John had to say and what the construction manager said. Other than that everything was pretty much the way I expected it to be, if not better.
Please make sure your sales staff is aware when products are discontinued. I'd chosen the dark green shingles for my house and garage roof. The roof over my back porch is flat and John informed me that it would be a different style of shingle but the color would be the same. Interlock, it turns out, no longer carries the dark green in this type of shingle. So now my house and garage roof are dark green and my back porch is beige.
I told them I was not interested in buying that day. I was just doing my research on what building materials were available so that I would know when I am ready in the future.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chemung
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Chemung, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Chemung.
How does a metal roof handle Chemung's 84 cm of annual snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface provides less friction for snow to grip. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels remain stable under heavy seasonal loading; the panels are warranted for wind gusts up to 120 mph, so the structural forces from typical McHenry County snow are well within design limits. Snow guards are available if you want to retain snow for insulation or prevent sliding onto walkways. The real advantage in your climate: aluminum expands and contracts uniformly with temperature swings, so repeated freeze-thaw cycling—you experience about 83 such days per year—doesn't cause the cracking, curling, or splitting that asphalt and wood shakes eventually suffer.
Will freeze-thaw damage my metal roof over time?
No. Aluminum's crystalline structure naturally resists freeze-thaw deterioration because it expands and contracts uniformly and has no pores that trap water and rupture when it freezes. With roughly 83 freeze-thaw cycles annually in Chemung, traditional materials like asphalt, wood shake, and concrete tile all develop stress cracks and loss of structural integrity within 20–30 years. Interlock's 3105-H24 roofing-grade aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is rated to withstand these cycles indefinitely. The Guardian Warranty explicitly covers cracking, curling, and splitting—zero percent of homeowners in your area will file claims on those items. This durability directly addresses McHenry County's harsh seasonal transitions.
Can aluminum roofing rust like steel, and is that a concern in Illinois?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the alloy beneath indefinitely. Steel roofing, by contrast, rusts aggressively unless its coating is maintained, which is why steel warranties rarely exceed 30 years. With Chemung's 838 mm of annual rainfall and typical wind gusts to 100 km/h that expose coatings to moisture and debris, corrosion immunity is real insurance. Interlock applies Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating to both sides of every panel and backs it with a 30-year finish warranty (ASTM D4214 / D2244 measured). The warranty covers chalking and fading, not rust—because rust simply cannot occur.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof, or is aluminum lightweight enough to install over my existing shingles?
Aluminum is extraordinarily light, so structural reinforcement is rarely needed. The Slate profile installs at about 0.41 lb/sq ft, while the Mediterranean Tile—which replicates heavyweight concrete or clay tile—weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than actual tile. Most homes can handle the weight without any reinforcement; in fact, Interlock installs over existing roofs in thousands of applications, which saves you thousands in tear-off labor. Your local installer has served the region since 2001, so they'll assess your specific framing during the estimate. For context, traditional concrete tile weighs 8–10 times more than Interlock's aluminum equivalent.
Will my metal roof blow off in McHenry County wind storms?
No. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph and are rated under ICC-ES ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025) for structural wind compliance. Chemung's typical gusts reach about 100 km/h (62 mph), well below this threshold. The interlocking design means each panel locks mechanically to its neighbors in all four directions, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This engineering was proven on coastal salt-air homes and Antarctic research stations where wind and extreme conditions are constant. When installed to specification by your local Interlock dealer, the roof simply will not lift or separate.
What is the warranty on a metal roof, and how long will it actually last?
Interlock backs every roof with The Guardian: a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty is one-time transferable, meaning the next owner receives 50 years of coverage from the installation date, which adds tangible resale value in Chemung's competitive market. With freeze-thaw cycles running about 83 per year and rainfall averaging 838 mm annually, the roof's non-prorated terms mean you pay nothing for defects—no depreciation schedule, no co-pays. The aluminum itself is proven: Interlock has manufactured panels since 1998 and installed them in salt-air coastal regions and Antarctica, where durability is non-negotiable.
Will an Interlock metal roof reduce my summer cooling costs?
Yes, if you choose energy-efficient colors. Those colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (for example, the Aged Copper Penny finish), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt shingles absorb. With approximately 3,084 sunshine hours per year in Chemung, summertime cooling load is meaningful; the Cool Roof Rating Council rates these finishes for their ability to lower attic temperatures. Over a roof's 50-year lifespan, the cumulative savings in air conditioning and the reduced wear on your HVAC system can offset a portion of the premium over asphalt. Non-energy-efficiency colors are available if you prefer darker aesthetics; the choice is yours.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shake?
Interlock requires virtually no maintenance. Unlike asphalt, which loses granules in rain and wind, aluminum has no granules to shed. Unlike wood shake, which splits and curls after about 20 years in Chemung's 83 annual freeze-thaw cycles, aluminum is dimensionally stable. You may occasionally rinse debris or leaves from the surface, but no recoating, no caulking, no wood treatment is needed. The CALGreen-verified design reduces maintenance burden compared to traditional materials. Over 50 years, the labor and material cost of maintaining an asphalt or wood roof—replacement, repairs, cleaning—compounds; aluminum's simplicity directly cuts that lifetime cost equation.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Yes, fundamentally. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; at the end of its life, it returns to the aluminum supply stream for reuse. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, end up in landfills by the ton because they are not recyclable. Every tear-off of an asphalt roof generates hazardous waste; Interlock breaks that cycle. With 838 mm of rainfall annually in Chemung, water runoff from reflective aluminum (emissivity 0.84) reduces urban heat island effect compared to dark asphalt. Choosing a metal roof means you're removing at least 1–2 tons of roofing waste per household from Illinois landfills and making a material that will circulate indefinitely rather than decompose.
Is there a local installer in Chemung who can install Interlock metal roofing?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the McHenry County region and surrounding areas since 2001, bringing more than two decades of installation experience and local knowledge of Illinois building codes and climate conditions. Your installer will assess your home's structure, recommend the appropriate profile (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, or Mediterranean Tile) based on your home's style, and manage the installation process—whether over an existing roof or as a new installation. Because they work with Interlock year-round in a freeze-thaw climate similar to yours, they understand how seasonal transitions affect installation and long-term performance. Contact them directly for a free estimate and to discuss your specific roofing goals.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Chemung’s climate?
Yes. Chemung averages about 84 cm of snow, 838 mm of rain, roughly 83 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 100 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
