Review: March 16, 2021 Completion: September 9, 2020

Last summer I realized I was in the need of a new roof on my old home which was built in 1876. I was hoping I could find a roof that accentuated the uniqueness and beauty of my old farm-style house. I always dreamed of owning a home with a metal roof, so I thought, well, let’s give this a look and see if it is an option. After searching for roofers and making some calls I found no one in my area offering metal roofs, needless to say, I became discouraged. Then, one day, on Facebook, I happened to see an ad with Midwest Roofing/Interlock Roofing showing the exact type of roof I was looking for!! I was so excited and called the number and was able to have an appointment arranged that very weekend. John came out, did some measuring, got up in my attic, then we sat and had a long, very informative discussion. John was extremely patient with my numerous questions and was able to explain things to me in layman’s terms, as I am not adept in the construction business, at all. So, the nitty gritty…I was originally thinking standing seam going into this whole project but then out came the slate look and oh my, that was it…The roof I had been looking for. It was exactly what needed to be on top of my house!!! And the black color just spoke to me…. John agreed!! Nowhere else had I ever seen a roof like the one I was about to have put on my beloved home. So, the price, while I knew a metal roof was going to cost more, I was looking more for security and peace of mind. I am a single parent of a child on the autism spectrum. I knew that I did not want to deal with roof issues in the future, the struggle to get a roofer to come to fix their problem, and the thought of having to replace it all over again just a few years down the road. Nope, the extra cost of this one-and-done roof was well worth it to me…after all, how do you put a price tag on peace of mind? And there aren’t many things in this world nowadays that can give you that. So, I signed the contract… The delivery…. how exciting…all these boxes lined up in my driveway…it was getting real!! Installation begins. Never in my lifetime have I met such an amazing installation crew, headed by Jesse. These guys worked tirelessly on transforming my average-looking home into the WOW home on the block. They took great care in working around my cupola and rock chimney, making sure everything was sealed where it needed to be, even reinforcing the cupola as it had been up there for so many years. These guys are not just installers, they are truly artists, and the pride in what they do shines in their workmanship. Even the care in the cleanup was amazing…very impressed. Any company can put out an amazing product, but for that product to remain amazing, that company has to have professional team members working with the customers…that is what you will get if you go with Interlock. Not just a stand-out product but a stand-out crew from sales, scheduling, and installation…it’s the whole package.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Richmond

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Richmond, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Richmond.

How does metal roofing handle Richmond's snow and ice buildup?

Metal roofing sheds snow and ice far better than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface prevents water from re-freezing at the edges. Richmond averages about 84 cm of snow annually, and with 83 freeze-thaw days per year, that cycling stress cracks and curls asphalt shingles over time. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels stay tight through those freeze-thaw swings—the aluminum expands and contracts uniformly, and there's no wood underneath to rot. Snow guards are available if you want to control how it slides off.

Will freeze-thaw cycles in McHenry County damage aluminum roofing?

No. Aluminum is naturally immune to the damage that freeze-thaw causes other materials. When water enters wood shake or asphalt, it freezes, expands, cracks, and splits the material on repeat. Aluminum has no wood fiber or binder to fail. With 83 freeze-thaw days annually in this region and 838 mm of rain, the metal surface simply drains water, the oxide layer regenerates if scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides protects against the corrosive spray and salt carried by winter wind. The panels remain structurally sound for decades.

Can aluminum roofing rust? Why is that different from steel?

Aluminum cannot rust at all—it contains no iron. Steel rusts because iron oxidizes when exposed to moisture; that rust is destructive and spreads. Aluminum does form an oxide layer, but it's thin, transparent, and self-healing. When you scratch it, a new oxide layer forms automatically within hours. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels is also protected by a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, which is why the system is warrantied 30 years against chalking and fading. This dual protection means no rust stains, no deterioration, and no maintenance from rain and the occasional 100 km/h wind gust common here.

How well does interlocking metal roofing hold up in high winds?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are mechanically locked together—wind cannot lift or separate them. The system is warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Richmond's typical wind gusts reach about 100 km/h, so you're well within the safe envelope. The panels don't flap, rattle, or loosen over time like shingles. Every connection point is locked, and the aluminum won't warp or twist in variable conditions. Combined with the lightweight design, this means less structural stress and no need for reinforcement.

Does hail damage metal roofing, and can it lower insurance costs?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 rating means the material performs well in hail events. Many insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofing because the risk of costly claims is lower. Aluminum's hardness and flexibility work together; it resists denting better than many assume, and when a dent does occur, it doesn't spread or crack like asphalt, wood, or concrete tile. Contact your insurer about available discounts once the roof is installed—many homeowners recover part of the cost through reduced premiums over time.

Will a metal roof help reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes. Interlock offers energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance as high as 0.55 (in the Aged Copper Penny finish). That means the roof reflects heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into the attic. Richmond receives about 3084 hours of sunshine per year, so summer cooling load is real. Cool Roof Rating Council testing confirms the reflective performance. While Richmond's winters are cold (mean 9.4°C annually), the energy benefit in summer and shoulder seasons comes without sacrificing winter performance. The lightweight aluminum also improves attic ventilation efficiency because it doesn't trap heat the way heavy materials do.

Is metal roofing light enough to install over an existing roof?

Yes. The Slate profile installs at roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake around 0.58, and even the Mediterranean Tile profile—which replicates the look of clay or concrete—weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft. That's roughly 96% lighter than actual tile. No structural reinforcement is needed, and in most cases the metal roof can be installed directly over existing asphalt shingles, avoiding the cost and landfill impact of tear-off. Interlock has been installed over existing roofs since 1998, including on buildings never designed for heavy loads. Your local installer, serving the region since 2001, can assess your specific roof and confirm whether an overlay is the right choice for your home.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Very little. Unlike asphalt shingles that curl, crack, and shed granules, or cedar shake that splits and rots, or tile that requires regular resealing, Interlock aluminum requires only basic gutter cleaning and occasional visual inspection. The panels don't deteriorate, the Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, and there's no wood to rot or metal to rust. Moss and algae occasionally grow in very damp climates, but Richmond's 838 mm annual rainfall and 3084 sunshine hours don't create the persistent dampness that feeds heavy growth. A rinse with a hose every couple of years keeps it looking new. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance needs compared to traditional roofing materials.

What warranty comes with Interlock metal roofing, and how long will it actually last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner and covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years from completion date. No other roofing material offers that kind of continuity. In practice, Interlock panels installed since 1998 are still performing across vastly different climates—from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station. The aluminum doesn't degrade; the coating is warranted 30 years against color fade. You're essentially buying your last roof.

Is metal roofing fire-safe?

Aluminum is non-combustible, and Interlock offers Class A fire classification, the highest rating available. The aluminum itself will not ignite or burn, and the ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC and IRC building codes. This matters in terms of insurance premiums, home safety, and peace of mind during wildfire season or if a neighbor's structure catches fire. Unlike asphalt, which melts and can ignite, or wood shake, which burns readily, metal roofing is a passive defense. Some insurers offer premium reductions for Class A roofing. The fire rating is automatically included in the system design, so there's no extra cost or complexity.
