With some advice of a new owner. Communication and they should have obtained necessary permits prior to starting project. Salesman should have explained the importance of snow guards in more areas than just entryways. Presently there are only 5 over both the front and rear doors. See above

Communication could have been better prior to the project starting. They communicated wonderfully until we paid our down payment. Then communication ceased. There was no communication until we reached out to them expressing our concerns. Once the project started communication was phenomenal. The roof looks extraordinary. We have had some heavy rain and our roof has held up wonderfully and it is beautiful. We believe it is a better quality than others.

I can tell you this, the salesman was informative. The process lasted about three to four hours. He was very thorough. The thing was the samples sizes were too small and you couldn't tell how it would fit with the rest of the current things in the house. He was very in depth and I wanted to be able to give some feedback.

Review: July 31, 2017Completion: May 26, 2017

Protect the house when removing the old roof. Better internal communication when materials are to be delivered by freight truck driver. Awful experience for something we were so excited to have done and feel like we wasted money going with a solution more expensive than a traditional shingle roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in North Chicago

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in North Chicago, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in North Chicago.

Will a metal roof handle North Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's non-corrosive properties make it ideal for your climate's ~80 annual freeze-thaw days. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle in cold and cracks as it cycles, 3105-H24 aluminum alloy expands and contracts uniformly without degradation. The Alunar fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214) protects against the chemical stress of salt spray from winter road treatments. Your region averages about 82 cm of snow and temperatures that dip well below freezing—conditions that would compromise conventional roofing but leave aluminum unaffected.

Does Interlock metal roofing handle heavy snow loads in North Chicago?

Absolutely. The Interlock Shake profile weighs just 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Slate only 0.41 lb/sq ft—light enough that snow accumulation stresses your structure far less than traditional materials would. With about 82 cm of annual snowfall here, the four-way interlocking panel system (ICC-ES ESR-1790 rated) maintains structural integrity under load while its smooth metal surface sheds snow and ice naturally, reducing the risk of ice dams that plague asphalt roofs. Optional snow guards keep slides controlled. The warranty extends to wind gusts reaching 120 mph—well above North Chicago's typical 99 km/h extremes—so winter storms won't compromise your panels.

Can metal roofing survive Lake County's wind gusts?

The four-way interlocking design is rated to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—a margin that comfortably exceeds North Chicago's documented peak gusts around 99 km/h. Each panel locks mechanically to its neighbors at four points, distributing wind stress across the entire roof system rather than concentrating it on fasteners. This redundancy means the Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and other profiles maintain their seal and attachment even during the occasional severe gust your region experiences. The Guardian warranty backs this performance explicitly.

Why does aluminum roofing resist rust better than steel in North Chicago's climate?

Aluminum roofing cannot rust because the material contains no iron—only roofing-grade 3105-H24 or 3003-H24 aluminum alloy per ASTM B209. When aluminum oxidizes, it forms a microscopic protective layer that actually heals itself if scratched, unlike steel, which rusts permanently once exposed. North Chicago's winter road salt (especially near Lake Michigan) and the region's ~835 mm of annual rainfall would devastate steel, but they have no corrosive effect on aluminum. Interlock applies Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating to both panel sides—extra insurance in salt-air environments—backed by a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. Your roof simply cannot develop rust, rot, or the orange staining that plagues steel competitors.

Do I need structural reinforcement for a metal tile roof?

No. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it can fasten directly over most existing roof decks without reinforcement. A traditional clay tile roof might require thousands in structural upgrades; Interlock Tile does not. This matters in North Chicago, where winter snow loads (about 82 cm annually) are a structural concern: the light weight means your framing already handles the occasional heavy snowfall safely. You'll save on engineering costs and labor, and you gain the authentic tile appearance without the load penalty. Many homeowners install Interlock Tile over their existing asphalt without tearing off the old roof first.

Does metal roofing qualify for hail damage coverage or insurance discounts?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty explicitly covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurance carriers recognize this non-combustible, high-impact-resistant material and offer premium reductions (discounts vary by insurer and policy). With North Chicago experiencing occasional severe thunderstorms, that Class 4 rating provides genuine protection: the aluminum alloy absorbs impact energy without puncturing or losing watertightness. Request quotes from your insurer mentioning the UL 2218 Class 4 rating; the durability often translates to lower renewal premiums or better coverage terms.

Will a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes. energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84—meaning they reflect, rather than absorb, the heat that asphalt shingles trap. North Chicago receives about 3,094 annual sunshine hours, and that summer sun translates to real cooling load; reflective metal roofs measurably reduce air-conditioning demand compared to dark asphalt. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating documents these savings. You won't notice dramatic differences in every climate, but in a region with your sunshine exposure and moderate summer temperatures, the reflective benefit compounds over decades. Paired with proper attic ventilation, metal roofing delivers cumulative energy savings that help offset its initial cost.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or tile?

Far less. Asphalt shingles require periodic inspections, patching, and moss/algae treatment, especially in North Chicago's damp climate (~835 mm annual rainfall and ~80 freeze-thaw cycles). Concrete and clay tile crack and shift with freeze-thaw, demanding repair or replacement. Aluminum Interlock panels shed debris automatically, resist mold and algae growth, and require no sealing, staining, or chemical treatment. The Alunar coating (30-year warranty against fading and chalking) handles North Chicago's weather without degradation. Annual visual inspection suffices; gutters need clearing as with any roof. The CALGreen sustainability rating acknowledges the reduction in ongoing maintenance burden—a significant advantage over the decades that asphalt demands constant upkeep.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost over asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you calculate the full lifecycle. An asphalt roof lasts 15–25 years and demands costly tear-offs to landfill every cycle; Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable to the next owner for 50 years) means you're buying your last roof. Over 50 years, you'll tear off asphalt 2–3 times, paying disposal fees and reinstallation labor each time. Interlock installs over existing roof decks (no tearoff), requires minimal maintenance in North Chicago's ~835 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw environment, often qualifies for insurance discounts (UL 2218 Class 4), and doesn't degrade from salt or freeze-thaw. The upfront premium vanishes when you avoid three full replacements and the energy savings accumulate.

Is aluminum roofing environmentally better than asphalt?

Substantially. Interlock aluminum is ~95% recyclable; when your roof finally reaches end-of-life decades from now, the material returns to the aluminum supply chain and becomes new cans, siding, or aircraft parts. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are nearly impossible to recycle and generate millions of tons of landfill waste annually. North Chicago's ~835 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw cycles drive asphalt replacement cycles every 15–25 years, perpetuating that landfill spiral. Interlock breaks that cycle: one installation lasts 50+ years, eliminating the repeated tear-off waste. The material itself contains no toxic binders or volatile compounds; the Alunar fluorocarbon coating is UV-stable and weathering-resistant without off-gassing. You're choosing a product that stops the landfill cycle and closes a materials loop.

Is a metal roof a good choice for North Chicago’s climate?

Yes. North Chicago averages about 82 cm of snow, 835 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 99 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
