Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Lake Forest, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
John M. was the third roofing sales consultant I talked to, and I had two more scheduled. After listening to John explain all the advantages of the InterLock System and materials, I was 95% sold but I thought it might be a little out of my price range. I was going to wait and hear from the other two roofers before I made my decision. John asked me what it would take for me to make my decision right then. I told him, and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I cancelled the other two sales rep. meetings. Boy am I glad I did. Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain! Jessie's team worked from 8AM to 7PM for a total of 8 days to complete the installation during July 2023 ( the hottest July ever recorded ). I don't know how they did it! Jessie answered all my questions during construction, and kept me informed of what would happen next. Some of the asphalt shingles on parts of the roof with a low slope had to be scraped off. The majority of the roof had a steeper slope, and the new metal roof could be installed directly on top. People had warned me that metal roofs were noisy during rain or hail events. Not true! The shingles and underlayment have actually muffled the sounds that I would hear coming from my old asphalt shingle roof. The ice and water shields that were on my existing chimneys and vents were extended farther up each one. Some of the vertical siding was temporarily removed and put back so new ice and water shield could be placed on top of the water and ice shield that was already there. I'm 70 years old so the lifetime guarantee may not mean much, but the ability to transfer to the next owner 50 more years of protection is huge! My wife and I are very satisfied with the quality of materials, and the outstanding installation work done by Jessie and his team. It's too bad that the rating companies only allow a 5 star rating for the best and most outstanding companies. A company like InterLock should get at least 10 stars.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Lake Forest
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Lake Forest, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Lake Forest.
Will a metal roof handle Lake Forest's freeze-thaw cycles without failing?
Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it cycles smoothly without cracking or becoming brittle—unlike slate, wood, or concrete tile, which fracture after repeated freeze-thaw stress. Lake Forest experiences roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year across a mean climate of 9.9°C, and the roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered for exactly this kind of climate. Its oxide layer also self-heals when the metal flexes, so microcracks never propagate into leaks. You're buying a roof that gets tougher as it ages in your cold winters.
Why can't an aluminum roof rust like a steel one?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rust—iron oxide—is chemically impossible. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, invisible oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. When that layer scratches or wears, it self-heals by reoxidizing on its own. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides of every panel adds another 30-year-warranted barrier against salt air corrosion, making aluminum the smart choice in humid, moisture-rich climates like Lake Forest's, which averages 835 mm of annual rainfall. Steel roofs require constant maintenance to prevent rust; aluminum simply doesn't.
How does a metal roof handle the snow Lake Forest gets every winter?
Metal roofs shed snow faster than asphalt because the smooth, slick surface has no grip—and the light weight means no structural risk from accumulated snow load. Lake Forest receives about 82 cm of snow annually, plus roughly 99 km/h wind gusts that naturally clear ridges and slopes. Four-way interlocking aluminum panels stay locked together even as snow slides, so no panels shift or separate. If you want to prevent snow from sliding onto a walkway, Interlock installs snow guards—but the roof itself won't sag, warp, or leak under the seasonal load. A slate or concrete tile roof of equivalent coverage would require costly structural reinforcement; this aluminum roof doesn't.
Can a metal roof withstand the wind gusts that hit this region?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. Lake Forest's typical gusts reach about 99 km/h, so you're more than covered. The interlocking system means no single panel can lift or separate—the whole roof acts as one unified structure. Wind insurance claims on metal roofs are rare because the engineering simply outlasts the seasonal storms. Your inspector or insurer may actually offer you a rate reduction for a roof designed to ICC-ES ESR-1790 standards and rated to survive twice the worst gusts your area typically sees.
Does a metal roof hold up to hail, and will it lower my insurance costs?
Interlock's aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's real protection, backed in writing. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated metal roofs, especially in areas with unpredictable spring storms. Even if hail does strike Lake Forest during one of its 82 cm snow winters or 3094 hours of yearly sunshine, you won't face the dent-and-leak cycle asphalt shingles suffer. Document your roof rating with your agent and ask what credit applies; many homeowners recoup a portion of their installation cost through insurance savings over the first decade.
Is a metal roof really low-maintenance compared to asphalt or wood?
Yes. Asphalt shingles need regular inspection, algae treatment, and eventual wholesale replacement; wood shakes split, curl, and rot in Lake Forest's 80 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 835 mm of rain. Aluminum doesn't degrade that way. It won't rot, split, curl, or lose impact resistance over decades—the Guardian warranty covers all of those failures. Seasonal debris removal (leaves, pollen) is your only real task, and gutters need the same cleaning regardless of roof type. CALGreen verification confirms that Interlock reduces maintenance burden compared to traditional materials. Your time and money stay in your pocket instead of going to roofers for repairs that never quite stop.
What's the real lifespan of an Interlock roof, and what does the warranty actually cover?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also transferable once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, which matters if you ever sell. In practice, homes with Interlock roofs installed in the late 1990s are still performing without failure, and the company has been manufacturing since 1998. A 30-year Alunar coating warranty (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured) guarantees color and gloss hold. You're buying the last roof Lake Forest homeowners in your position will ever install—not a 20-year temporary fix.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost in the long run?
Compare the total cost over 50 years, not the price tag. Asphalt shingles cost less upfront but need replacement every 15–20 years; by year 50, you've bought and installed three or four roofs, plus repairs. Aluminum costs more initially but lasts a lifetime with no replacement, no tear-off disposal, and minimal maintenance. Your property taxes may stabilize or decline if the roof is permanent (ask your assessor). Insurance discounts for Class 4 impact and wind resistance apply immediately. Energy savings compound over decades. The transferable 50-year warranty to the next owner raises resale appeal. When you tally material, labor, disposal, energy, and insurance across 50 years, the per-year cost of aluminum drops below asphalt—and you never hire a roofer again.
Will an Interlock metal roof help sell my Lake Forest home faster or at a higher price?
Aluminum roofing in profiles like Slate, Cedar Shingle, or Mediterranean Tile restores period-appropriate aesthetics without the liabilities of wood rot or slate failure. Buyers see a finished, permanent roof with the Guardian warranty transferable to them for 50 years—a major selling point in an area where roofing costs and home maintenance are top concerns. The visual impact is immediate: clean lines, no moss, no curling shingles, no repairs pending. Appraisers recognize the durability, and real estate agents can confidently market a roof that won't require work for decades. The combination of aesthetic appeal, warranty protection, and zero-maintenance reputation creates a tangible advantage when selling in a market where buyers value both beauty and solid systems.
Can an Interlock roof be installed over my existing shingles, and how long does the job take?
Yes. Aluminum's extraordinary light weight—roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile, 0.59 for Tile—means the roof installs directly over most existing asphalt without structural reinforcement. Removing old shingles, hauling waste to the landfill, and rebuilding the deck takes weeks and costs thousands extra; installing over the existing roof cuts labor time and eliminates disposal fees. Your attic gains an extra insulation layer too. Installation timeline depends on roof size and weather, but most residential jobs in Lake Forest complete within 1–2 weeks. The local Interlock installer has served the region since 2001 and knows Lake County permitting, snow season scheduling, and the freeze-thaw demands of this climate intimately.
