Review: June 17, 2019 Completion: May 31, 2019

Dear John, Several years ago, I became fascinated with the idea of a metal roof. Tired of constantly looking at my roof for signs of deterioration, I wondered if a metal roof was a realistic option for a home, as I only noticed them on barns and businesses. A few months ago, you and Mike Rasmussen visited my home to provide an estimate. I was shocked at the number of options for beautiful metal roofs that were not just functional but very attractive. Now, with the job complete – I couldn’t be more pleased. Neighbors and friends all have the same response, wondering if this is really a metal roof and commenting on how attractive it is. One of my concerns in deciding upon a new roof related to my previous experience with roofers. A twenty-year warranty for a roofing company that went out of business, asphalt shingles that began deteriorating less than ten years after installation, with manufacturers blaming the installer and the installer blaming the manufacturer, made warranties meaningless. My experience with Interlock has been excellent from beginning to end. Knowing that Interlock both manufactures and installs its roofs eliminated my concern about responsibility. A lifetime warranty (limited to 50 years when I sell my house) means I no longer have to worry about replacing my roof. It’s such a relief to know I am done with such concerns. You and Mike assured me that the installers would be meticulous and clean the area around my house every night; however, they did far more than that. I have seen many roofs installed, and it is usually a quick installation. Under the careful supervision of Jessie, the installers tediously worked to cut and detail each section. Working around the chimneys, they worked to be sure every detail was perfect, spending several hours in one small area. Preparing the areas around the eaves and valleys (not sure how to describe things) was very time-consuming as they wanted everything to be perfect. This is something else my neighbors noticed. The pride they took in their work was apparent at every turn as they answered all my questions and explained why they were doing various things. When they began working on the addition, one of the workers asked me if that room was cold in the winter and " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot in the summer. I thought he was clairvoyant because it has always been the most uncomfortable room in the house. He explained there was no vent on that part of the roof, which impedes airflow. They added a vent, at no extra cost, once more, an indication of their commitment to excellence. I’m looking forward to seeing the difference in the winter – hoping I can remove the space heater. There was one young man who spent each day making sure everything was cleaned up. None of my trees, plants, or flowerpots were damaged. I’m not sure they were even touched. After each of the four days, the only indication that work was being done was the dumpster in my driveway, as everything was meticulously cleaned. Concern for the environment is very important to me, and knowing that my roof eliminates additional landfill waste is definitely an additional benefit. Thank you for living up to every promise you made when you first visited. I couldn’t be more pleased with my investment. A few neighbors who recently got new roofs were sorry they hadn’t known about how attractive, and permanent metal roofs are. A few others have said they will seriously consider metal roofs when it’s time to replace their existing roofs. So my years-long dream of a metal roof is complete; far more attractive than I ever imagined, highly functional and permanent. My only disappointment is that I anticipated listening to the rain hitting the metal roof – but it’s actually very quiet. For most, I guess that is another plus. I would be happy to answer any questions potential metal roof owners might have, as I am so pleased with my purchase (investment).

John was fantastic! I really expected to have a pushy salesman, but John was anything but. He was very nice and told me about the product. He showed me how the product is superior and left the decision to buy up to me. He was never pushy. He is the type of guy that walks in and you instantly like and trust him. Truly a great guy.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in River Forest

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in River Forest, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in River Forest.

How does a metal roof handle River Forest's annual snow load and ice dams?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, which trap moisture and encourage ice dam formation during River Forest's typical 73 cm annual snowfall and 82 freeze-thaw cycles. The four-way interlocking panels shed water immediately, preventing the pooling that causes ice dams. Metal's thermal conductivity also works in your favor: unlike insulating asphalt, the roof surface temperature equalizes with outside air, reducing the melt-and-refreeze cycle. Optional snow guards can be installed if you prefer controlled shedding onto walkways.

Why does aluminum roofing survive freeze-thaw cycling better than asphalt or wood?

Aluminum expands and contracts minimally across temperature swings—about one-third the expansion rate of asphalt and one-tenth that of wood. In River Forest, where you experience roughly 82 freeze-thaw days annually and temperatures fluctuate sharply, asphalt becomes brittle and cracks, while wood swells and splits. Aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy remains dimensionally stable. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (30-year warranty against degradation per ASTM D4214/D2244) protects the alloy itself; even if scratched, the oxide layer self-heals, preventing the corrosion cycle that destroys other materials.

Can an aluminum metal roof rust in Illinois's wet climate?

No—aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. With roughly 993 mm of annual rainfall in Cook County, rust is a real threat to steel roofs and a slow killer of asphalt, but aluminum's roofing-grade alloy (ASTM B209 3105-H24/3003-H24) resists corrosion by forming a protective oxide layer that repairs itself when scratched. The two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish adds 30 years of additional protection against any surface degradation. This dual-layer defense—alloy plus coating—is why Interlock panels have been fielded from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations since 1998.

Will a metal roof hold up in Cook County's wind gusts?

Yes. River Forest experiences typical gusts up to 97 km/h with mean winds around 19 km/h, well within the rated envelope. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking design means each panel is mechanically secured to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This same interlocking system also eliminates the fastener pull-through failures that plague shingle roofs after years of wind cycling.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal roofing?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—while the Cedar Shingle weighs only 0.41 lb/sq ft. For comparison, asphalt shingles typically run 2–3 lb/sq ft, and genuine slate or clay tile 10–15 lb/sq ft. Because metal panels are so light, they install directly over most existing roof decks without structural upgrades, which saves thousands in framing work. This also means your home's foundation and support system experience no additional stress load.

What hail protection does a metal roof offer, and will insurance recognize it?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurance carriers offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because claims are rare. Aluminum's hardness and the panel's engineered geometry absorb impact energy without cracking or denting noticeably. After hail, you may see minor surface marks, but the roof's integrity and water-shedding ability remain unaffected—critical in a region where severe weather is an annual possibility.

Is a metal roof more affordable than asphalt over 50 years?

Yes. Asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years; over a typical 50-year ownership, you'll buy it 2–3 times, plus tear-off and disposal costs. Interlock carries a lifetime limited non-prorated material warranty for the original owner and a one-time transferable 50-year term for the next owner. A single installation, no replacement cycle, no tear-off labor, and negligible maintenance costs make metal the lower total-cost roof over that span. Initial cost is higher, but cost per year of service favors metal decisively, and the transferable warranty adds resale value that asphalt cannot match.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need in Illinois?

Minimal. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, curl, or require re-sealing like asphalt, wood shake, or tile. River Forest's 993 mm annual rainfall and 73 cm snow create plenty of natural washdown; gutters should be kept clear and checked after severe weather, just as with any roof. The four-way interlocking design and solid deck underlayment eliminate the fastener corrosion and panel movement that plague traditional metal panels. CALGreen verification confirms the reduced-maintenance classification. Most owners never access the roof after installation except for routine gutter upkeep.

Is a metal roof fire-rated, and does it matter for my homeowner's insurance?

Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and available with Class A fire classification—the highest rating under the ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for current IBC/IRC codes). Non-combustible roofing often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts and is required or preferred in some subdivision covenants. Aluminum cannot ignite, spread flame, or contribute fuel to a fire. In a wildfire scenario or chimney spark event, a Class A metal roof provides definitive protection compared to asphalt (which is combustible) or wood shake (which burns readily).

Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Significantly. Asphalt shingles are petrochemical products that end up in landfills every 15–20 years; millions of tons are discarded annually. Interlock's aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable and never requires replacement—no tear-off waste, no disposal costs, no landfill contribution. The panels themselves are manufactured from recycled aluminum stock, closing a material loop that asphalt cannot match. Over a 50-year roof life in River Forest, eliminating 2–3 asphalt replacements means avoiding 200+ pounds of landfill per roof, multiplied across thousands of homes.
