The only glitch we had during the project was not getting a permit in my village. If they would have received the permit, the work would not have been delayed by two weeks.

Review: June 17, 2019 Completion: May 31, 2019

Dear John, Several years ago, I became fascinated with the idea of a metal roof. Tired of constantly looking at my roof for signs of deterioration, I wondered if a metal roof was a realistic option for a home, as I only noticed them on barns and businesses. A few months ago, you and Mike Rasmussen visited my home to provide an estimate. I was shocked at the number of options for beautiful metal roofs that were not just functional but very attractive. Now, with the job complete – I couldn’t be more pleased. Neighbors and friends all have the same response, wondering if this is really a metal roof and commenting on how attractive it is. One of my concerns in deciding upon a new roof related to my previous experience with roofers. A twenty-year warranty for a roofing company that went out of business, asphalt shingles that began deteriorating less than ten years after installation, with manufacturers blaming the installer and the installer blaming the manufacturer, made warranties meaningless. My experience with Interlock has been excellent from beginning to end. Knowing that Interlock both manufactures and installs its roofs eliminated my concern about responsibility. A lifetime warranty (limited to 50 years when I sell my house) means I no longer have to worry about replacing my roof. It’s such a relief to know I am done with such concerns. You and Mike assured me that the installers would be meticulous and clean the area around my house every night; however, they did far more than that. I have seen many roofs installed, and it is usually a quick installation. Under the careful supervision of Jessie, the installers tediously worked to cut and detail each section. Working around the chimneys, they worked to be sure every detail was perfect, spending several hours in one small area. Preparing the areas around the eaves and valleys (not sure how to describe things) was very time-consuming as they wanted everything to be perfect. This is something else my neighbors noticed. The pride they took in their work was apparent at every turn as they answered all my questions and explained why they were doing various things. When they began working on the addition, one of the workers asked me if that room was cold in the winter and " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot in the summer. I thought he was clairvoyant because it has always been the most uncomfortable room in the house. He explained there was no vent on that part of the roof, which impedes airflow. They added a vent, at no extra cost, once more, an indication of their commitment to excellence. I’m looking forward to seeing the difference in the winter – hoping I can remove the space heater. There was one young man who spent each day making sure everything was cleaned up. None of my trees, plants, or flowerpots were damaged. I’m not sure they were even touched. After each of the four days, the only indication that work was being done was the dumpster in my driveway, as everything was meticulously cleaned. Concern for the environment is very important to me, and knowing that my roof eliminates additional landfill waste is definitely an additional benefit. Thank you for living up to every promise you made when you first visited. I couldn’t be more pleased with my investment. A few neighbors who recently got new roofs were sorry they hadn’t known about how attractive, and permanent metal roofs are. A few others have said they will seriously consider metal roofs when it’s time to replace their existing roofs. So my years-long dream of a metal roof is complete; far more attractive than I ever imagined, highly functional and permanent. My only disappointment is that I anticipated listening to the rain hitting the metal roof – but it’s actually very quiet. For most, I guess that is another plus. I would be happy to answer any questions potential metal roof owners might have, as I am so pleased with my purchase (investment).

John was fantastic! I really expected to have a pushy salesman, but John was anything but. He was very nice and told me about the product. He showed me how the product is superior and left the decision to buy up to me. He was never pushy. He is the type of guy that walks in and you instantly like and trust him. Truly a great guy.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Belmont Cragin

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Belmont Cragin, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Belmont Cragin.

Will a metal roof hold up through Belmont Cragin's freeze-thaw winters?

Yes—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw cycles because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. The Cook County region experiences about 82 freeze-thaw days annually, a climate that degrades asphalt shingles and wood shakes over time. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is designed for exactly this stress: it doesn't absorb moisture, so ice doesn't wedge into material and fracture it. The Alunar coating protects both sides of every panel (including the underside exposed during installation), preventing any degradation from the inside out. This is why the product carries a 30-year coating warranty and a lifetime limited material warranty covering splitting and cracking—conditions that plague organic roofing in your climate.

How does metal roofing perform under Belmont Cragin's snow load?

Metal roofs shed snow efficiently because their smooth, slippery surface prevents accumulation, and the thermal properties of aluminum mean less heat loss that would otherwise create ice dams. Belmont Cragin receives about 73 cm of snow annually, often compacted by wind gusts averaging 19 km/h with peaks to 97 km/h. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels lock together so tightly that wind cannot lift or separate them during snow events. The Shake, Slate, and Cedar Shingle profiles can be optionally fitted with snow guards to control discharge in areas where falling snow could pose a risk. Because the panels weigh only 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft (compared to slate at 8–10 lb/sq ft), no structural reinforcement is needed—your existing framing handles the load without upgrades.

Does a metal roof leak more than asphalt in heavy rain?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered so that water drains away before it can penetrate seams. Belmont Cragin receives about 993 mm of rainfall annually, distributed across roughly 120 rainy days, making robust water management essential. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides—top, bottom, and both edges—creating a labyrinth that forces water to run downhill rather than pool or seep sideways. When installed over a solid deck with underlayment (standard practice), the system is essentially identical in water defense to asphalt shingles: redundant barriers ensure that a single compromised seam won't allow leaks into the structure. The ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 certifies the product's water-shedding design under IBC/IRC codes governing heavy-rainfall regions.

Can metal roofing stay attached during Belmont Cragin's high-wind events?

Yes—the four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Cook County's typical gusts reach 97 km/h, well within the design margin. Each panel interlocks to its four neighbors, creating a unified structure that distributes wind force across the entire roof rather than allowing individual panels to peel away. This continuous, mechanical lock is fundamentally different from fastener-dependent designs: no single fastener failure can cause a cascade. The warranty covers this performance explicitly, so if your roof is properly installed, wind damage within the warranty term becomes an insurance claim issue, not a material failure. During the spring and fall gust season, homeowners can rest assured the roof will stay put.

Will a metal roof reduce my homeowner's insurance in Illinois?

Possibly—many insurers offer discounts for roofs rated UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating available, and Interlock's panels carry this certification. Class 4 means the roof resists impact from hailstones up to 1.5 inches at velocities that would damage asphalt shingles. The warranty explicitly covers perforation from hail in this size range. While insurance discounts vary by carrier and policy, the combination of non-combustibility (Class A fire rating), superior wind resistance (120 mph warranty), and hail durability often qualifies metal roofs for lower premiums. Contact your agent with the product's UL 2218 Class 4 rating and non-combustible aluminum specification; they can advise on your specific discount eligibility. In a region prone to spring storms, impact resistance is a tangible asset that underwriters recognize.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel metal roofing does?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is oxidation of iron, a chemical process that doesn't occur in aluminum alloys. Instead, aluminum forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. If this layer is scratched, it self-heals in hours by oxidizing again automatically. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum per ASTM B209, alloys chosen specifically for this self-protecting property. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating is applied to both sides of every panel—a critical detail in salt-air or corrosive environments, though even more valuable here in Cook County's variable humidity. This dual-sided coating carries a 30-year fade and chalk warranty. The result: while steel roofs degrade within 20–30 years, aluminum roofs remain chemically stable for decades, which is why the product has been installed in Antarctic research stations and coastal salt-air homes since 1998.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal roofs require almost no maintenance: no patching, no coating reapplication, no moss treatment. Asphalt shingles in Belmont Cragin's climate—with 82 freeze-thaw cycles and 73 cm of snow annually—degrade noticeably within 15–20 years, requiring gutter cleaning and periodic repairs. Wood shakes split and curl in freeze-thaw cycles and invite moss growth in damp springs. Interlock's aluminum is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance because the material doesn't absorb water, doesn't split, doesn't rot, and doesn't support moss. The 30-year coating warranty means the surface stays color-true and fades negligibly over decades. After 25 years of exposure to about 3,051 annual sunshine hours and 993 mm of rain, your roof will look nearly unchanged. Homeowners simply keep gutters clear—a task required with any roof—and that's it. No sealant resealing. No shingle replacement cycles.

What makes the Interlock warranty better than a typical roof warranty?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, then one-time transferable for 50 years to the next owner—meaning your roof's protection outlasts most mortgages. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no dollar limit on repairs or replacement. Non-prorated means if a defect appears in year 20, Interlock covers it fully, not at a declining percentage. This differs sharply from asphalt warranties, typically 20–25 years with steep prorations after year 10. Given Belmont Cragin's 82 annual freeze-thaw days and 73 cm of snow—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles—the lifetime coverage for splitting and curling is enormously valuable. The transferable 50-year term also means you're selling peace of mind to the next buyer, boosting resale appeal. Most homeowners install one Interlock roof and never roof again.

Can Interlock install over my existing roof, or must the old roof come off?

Interlock can install over most existing roofs because the panels weigh only about 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than traditional slate or tile. This means your home's existing framing structure almost never requires reinforcement. Installation typically takes 2–4 days depending on roof complexity, and because tear-off isn't necessary, debris disposal costs and timeline delays vanish. The local installer, serving the region since 2001, will inspect your roof decking and structure upfront to confirm it's suitable for overlay; if the old roof is compromised, removal is still the safer choice. But in most cases, the new metal roof installs directly over your old shingles with underlayment and fasteners rated to the ICC-ES ESR-1790 standard. This overlay approach saves time, money, and the environmental cost of sending old asphalt shingles to landfill.

Will a metal roof actually reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color with high solar reflectance. Interlock offers energy-efficiency-certified finishes with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance as high as 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny profile), meaning the roof reflects heat that dark asphalt absorbs and traps. Cool Roof Rating Council testing backs these values, showing measurable temperature reduction compared to conventional dark shingles. In Belmont Cragin, with about 3,051 annual sunshine hours and a mean temperature of 10.5°C, the cooling benefit is most pronounced during June–August, when heat-absorbing roofs drive air-conditioning harder. The energy savings depend on your air-conditioning load and local electricity rates, but homeowners in comparable climates typically report 5–15% cooling cost reductions. The reflective coating is part of the Alunar 70% PVDF system, so the benefit persists for 30 years under warranty—asphalt shingles lose reflectivity within 5–7 years as they weather and absorb dirt.
