Review: March 16, 2021Completion: September 9, 2020

Last summer I realized I was in the need of a new roof on my old home which was built in 1876. I was hoping I could find a roof that accentuated the uniqueness and beauty of my old farm-style house. I always dreamed of owning a home with a metal roof, so I thought, well, let’s give this a look and see if it is an option. After searching for roofers and making some calls I found no one in my area offering metal roofs, needless to say, I became discouraged. Then, one day, on Facebook, I happened to see an ad with Midwest Roofing/Interlock Roofing showing the exact type of roof I was looking for!! I was so excited and called the number and was able to have an appointment arranged that very weekend. John came out, did some measuring, got up in my attic, then we sat and had a long, very informative discussion. John was extremely patient with my numerous questions and was able to explain things to me in layman’s terms, as I am not adept in the construction business, at all. So, the nitty gritty…I was originally thinking standing seam going into this whole project but then out came the slate look and oh my, that was it…The roof I had been looking for. It was exactly what needed to be on top of my house!!! And the black color just spoke to me…. John agreed!! Nowhere else had I ever seen a roof like the one I was about to have put on my beloved home. So, the price, while I knew a metal roof was going to cost more, I was looking more for security and peace of mind. I am a single parent of a child on the autism spectrum. I knew that I did not want to deal with roof issues in the future, the struggle to get a roofer to come to fix their problem, and the thought of having to replace it all over again just a few years down the road. Nope, the extra cost of this one-and-done roof was well worth it to me…after all, how do you put a price tag on peace of mind? And there aren’t many things in this world nowadays that can give you that. So, I signed the contract… The delivery…. how exciting…all these boxes lined up in my driveway…it was getting real!! Installation begins. Never in my lifetime have I met such an amazing installation crew, headed by Jesse. These guys worked tirelessly on transforming my average-looking home into the WOW home on the block. They took great care in working around my cupola and rock chimney, making sure everything was sealed where it needed to be, even reinforcing the cupola as it had been up there for so many years. These guys are not just installers, they are truly artists, and the pride in what they do shines in their workmanship. Even the care in the cleanup was amazing…very impressed. Any company can put out an amazing product, but for that product to remain amazing, that company has to have professional team members working with the customers…that is what you will get if you go with Interlock. Not just a stand-out product but a stand-out crew from sales, scheduling, and installation…it’s the whole package.

Review: November 26, 2013Completion: November 9, 2013

We had replaced one roof in the time we had owned our home, and now it was time for the second replacement. I began to wonder if there were any alternatives to old asphalt technology. Also, we had two concerns about asphalt, the first is that it is not clean from an environmental standpoint and second, asphalt is oil based which means its cost is linked with the price of oil. I noticed that many commercial buildings had metal roofs. My wife and I usually do a lot of deep research for major home projects. We began looking into the possibility of replacing the current roof with metal. Our research indicated that there were residential metal roofs available in various metals and styles. Four factors need to be considered. Type of metal. We chose aluminum over steel. It’s lighter and less susceptible to corrosion, although corrosion is not a major factor due to the various coatings and treatments applied to both metals during the manufacturing process. Structural assembly. We liked the Interlock method of attaching the panels to each other and the roof base. When complete, the system is structurally sound and waterproof. Installation process. Installing a metal roof requires experience. Installation is different from that of an asphalt roof. During our research, we had a hard time locating installers that had experience installing residential metal roofs. This was another reason that we chose Interlock. They are associated with installation crews who have the knowledge and experience required for working with the Interlock product. The only other factor to consider is the style and color, and there are many to choose from. Installation was uneventful, the crew was courteous, and they explained exactly what they were doing and answered any questions that we had. The roof looks beautiful, and we have had many compliments on it since it was installed two weeks ago. We are very happy that we chose Interlock for this project and highly recommend them.

Review: May 11, 2017

Our new roof is beautiful! We have received so many compliments and inquiries since our Interlock roof was installed four weeks ago. John delivered on his promise with a quality product and set up the stage for what was to come, answering all our early questions and showing us the information we were looking for to make a confident decision. He provided us with installation pictures of previous jobs, the product specifications, color and type of samples, historical data on product performance and much more. Dal from customer service responded quickly with dates when the material was arriving and dates for the installation. After some concerns about having to travel for work and being out of town, Al communicated well, and they worked around my travel schedule my family appreciated this greatly. The roof is not any louder during several of the storms we have had already than before. Despite a few outside temperatures reaching the 80s and sunny, the inside of the house has stayed cool without needing to turn on the AC or ceiling fans. It really is a new experience to walk into our second-level rooms and not have it feel warmer than the lower level. The installation crew did a great job. They told us everything they were doing and answered all of our questions. The fire department even stopped by during the installation to ask what it was! The crew completed the job in 4 days, working over the weekend to finish before the next storm. They left the yard clean every night, and they cleared out the gutters from all of the debris. After watching the team install the new roof safely, we have come to appreciate the craftsmanship that comes with installing this type of roof. The crews are proud of the product, and their care shows in the installation. Putting on this new roof requires a lot of skill, a lot of hours, and experience that I think new owners won’t realize until observing them and going through it. Minimal waste scraps, efficiently making thousands of measurements and metal shaping to perfectly fit all the corners and bends is a testament to the experience our crew, led by Jesse and Sal, had. This Interlock company has been great and there have been so many people referenced here that have worked to provide us a great customer experience. To the whole team, great job, and thank you. We look forward to the many years this roof will continuously perform as it was designed and the many more times we will appreciate the beauty of it.

Review: May 10, 2021Completion: May 3, 2021

The process was seamless, it was a no-headache, no-hassle experience and the roof looks amazing. The team was fast, respectful, and really took the time to make sure we understood everything that was going on. They were very safe and considerate of my dogs going in and out of the backyard, and took extra time to clean up everything each day, and especially when they finished the job. And not a single plant damaged (which is amazing, because they are planted right up next to the house)! They were friendly and communicative, and took care of everything. It was a great experience, and we now have the most beautiful roof on the block. I think the scheduling team could have been a little bit more proactive in terms of communication in the time between the signing of the contract and the installation, but obviously it all worked out just fine, so they clearly were doing everything they needed to be doing scheduling-wise, and it ultimately didn't influence the experience all that much, especially since John Mondschean (sales) was so accommodating and communicative throughout the process. There have been a lot of new roofs going on in my neighborhood since the big double hailstorm last year, and I can confidently say that ours is the most beautiful, and the team that installed it was the cleanest and most considerate. There was not a single piece of plastic, nail, etc. left behind after they were done, and they were pretty quiet throughout the process, which was important to me as I work from home.

I just want to say the Interlock team did an excellent job installing my roof. The installation team were craftsman, cordial, punctual, and they did a great job of keeping the work site clean at the end of each day. As far as the roof I love the look of the black standing seam with the dark gray Hardie Board siding, and I can already tell that the roof is keeping my house and garage cooler.

Jesse was very professional and knowledgeable about the product. He answered any questions we had about the roof. It all went great! They could have kept me updated instead of me having to continually call for updates. They could have gave me a status but they didn't.

Areas where flashing needs to extend beyond a vertical surface i.e. chimney's, second story corners, you need a method to provide a more professional look when making cuts in aluminum siding. Happy with my decision to purchase a roof from Interlock. It looks great. Time will tell if it will perform as promised.

Review: July 14, 2021Completion: June 21, 2021

Communication could have been better prior to the project starting. They communicated wonderfully until we paid our down payment. Then communication ceased. There was no communication until we reached out to them expressing our concerns. Once the project started communication was phenomenal. The roof looks extraordinary. We have had some heavy rain and our roof has held up wonderfully and it is beautiful. We believe it is a better quality than others.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Logan Square

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Logan Square, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Logan Square.

Will a metal roof handle Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles better than asphalt or wood?

Aluminum handles freeze-thaw cycling because the material itself doesn't degrade when water freezes and thaws within it—aluminum is non-porous and the oxide layer won't crack from expansion. Logan Square averages about 69 freeze-thaw days per year, a serious threat to asphalt shingles and wood shakes, which absorb moisture and split or curl when ice forms. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) remains structurally unchanged through thousands of freeze-thaw cycles, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (30-year warranty) protects the metal from the repeated stress. You're installing a roof engineered for exactly this climate.

How does a metal roof perform under Logan Square's snow loads?

Metal roofing sheds snow effectively because its smooth, hard surface prevents ice dams and reduces the weight burden on your structure. Cook County receives about 73 cm of snow annually, and that accumulation is dangerous on asphalt or wood—water from melting snow works its way under shingles, causing leaks and rot. Interlock panels are four-way interlocking and tested to UL 2218 Class 4 impact standards, so they withstand the stress of snow sliding and shifting without deformation. At just 0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile, the aluminum panels weigh so little that no structural reinforcement is needed—your home's frame carries less total load year-round.

Can a metal roof rust in a climate as wet as Illinois?

No. Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, and aluminum has no iron to oxidize. Instead, aluminum develops an invisible oxide layer that seals the surface and self-heals when scratched, so minor cuts from installation or tree branches won't trigger corrosion. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel for extra corrosion protection in humid climates. Cook County averages 1024 mm of rain per year plus snowmelt, creating persistent moisture that would accelerate rust on steel or degrade wood. Aluminum roofing has been installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations since 1998 without rust failures—it's the material choice when moisture is constant.

Does interlocking metal roofing hold up to Chicago-area wind gusts?

Four-way interlocking panels are mechanically locked together so wind cannot lift individual sheets—they move as one unit. Interlock's design is warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph, and Cook County's typical gusts reach about 95 km/h (59 mph), well below that threshold. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) confirms the panels meet IBC/IRC wind-load standards for your region. Even if a severe storm produces stronger gusts, the interlocking system distributes uplift forces across the entire roof plane rather than concentrating stress on fasteners like asphalt shingles do. This design has withstood documented wind events in exposed North American locations for over two decades.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal roofing?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Tile profile installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes' existing framing was built to carry much heavier loads, so the metal roof adds minimal weight. The Cedar Shingle profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft, so your structure actually carries less total load than it does under current asphalt shingles. This also means Interlock installs directly over most existing roofs without tear-off, reducing labor cost and avoiding the landfill cycle. In Logan Square's climate with about 73 cm of annual snow, the light weight of aluminum becomes an advantage—less structural stress from both the roof material itself and from snow accumulation.

Will my homeowner's insurance recognize hail protection from metal roofing?

Interlock panels carry UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest hail classification available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Some insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 roofing; you should contact your agent with the UL 2218 certification. Asphalt shingles typically receive Class 1 or 2 ratings and are far more vulnerable to impact damage in severe hail. While Cook County hail events are not frequent in the climate data, the impact resistance matters for resale value and peace of mind. Submit the ICC-ES report ESR-1790 and the UL 2218 documentation to your insurer—they have the technical specs needed to assess your roof's durability.

What's the real lifespan of an Interlock metal roof, and what does the warranty cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—essentially every failure mode except cosmetic fading. The warranty transfers once, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage from completion, which dramatically improves your home's resale appeal. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (measured to ASTM D4214/D2244 standards), so color integrity lasts three decades. Most homeowners who install Interlock expect 50+ year service life, and many installations from the 1998-2005 era remain in service today. In Logan Square's humid climate with 69 freeze-thaw days annually, the non-prorated warranty against cracking and splitting is invaluable—it protects you through the exact conditions that fail other materials.

What metal roofing profiles look best on a Logan Square home?

Interlock offers five profiles: Slate (refined geometric look), Cedar Shingle (traditional dimensional shake), Shake (larger, rustic texture), Mediterranean Tile (curved barrel tiles), and Standing Seam (modern clean lines). Each profile is manufactured from the same roofing-grade aluminum and carries identical performance specs—UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating, 120 mph wind warranty, Alunar 70% PVDF coating with 30-year fade protection. Your choice depends on the home's architecture and your preference. Slate and Cedar Shingle suit historic Logan Square cottages and bungalows; Mediterranean Tile works for contemporary or eclectic designs; Standing Seam suits modern homes. All profiles shed snow equally well and resist the 1024 mm of annual rainfall with identical four-way interlocking strength. Visit the showroom to see samples—the profile you choose should match your home's character.

Can a metal roof reduce cooling costs in a Chicago summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt does, reducing cooling demand. The Aged Copper Penny finish achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity 0.84, certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council—this means more sunlight bounces away instead of heating your attic. Cook County receives about 3094 sunshine hours per year, so summer heat gain is a real cost driver. Reflective metal roofing reduces the radiant heat that asphalt shingles capture and radiate into your home, especially effective in July and August. The exact energy savings depend on your attic insulation, HVAC efficiency, and cooling setpoint, but studies show Cool Roof finishes reduce cooling energy 5–15% in humid climates. Over a 50-year roof life, that translates to meaningful utility savings.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Almost none. Aluminum panels don't rot, split, curl, or require regular sealant reapplication like asphalt or wood shakes do. The four-way interlocking design prevents debris from lodging under seams, and snow slides off naturally without ice dam buildup. Asphalt requires gutter cleaning every 1–2 years and sealant maintenance every 5–10 years; wood shakes need fungicide treatment and individual shingle replacement. Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF coating maintains color for 30 years (ASTM D4214/D2244 tested) without chalking or fading into white powder that washes away. In Logan Square's 1024 mm annual rainfall and 73 cm snow, a low-maintenance roof saves thousands in labor and sealant over its lifetime. The Guardian Warranty covers maintenance-related defects, so your protection doesn't fade—you're buying the last roof you'll install, not a roof you'll repair decade after decade.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Logan Square’s climate?

Yes. Logan Square averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
