Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Lincoln Square, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Lincoln Square
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Lincoln Square, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Lincoln Square.
Will a metal roof handle Lincoln Square's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?
Yes—aluminum's molecular structure makes it immune to the cracking and splitting that plague asphalt and wood in freeze-thaw climates. Your area experiences roughly 69 freeze-thaw days per year, plus about 73 cm of snow annually. Aluminum expands and contracts without degradation because it contains no iron and cannot develop rust that weakens the material. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against chalking, adds another layer of protection by preventing moisture penetration into the substrate itself.
How does a metal roof manage heavy snow and ice dams in Chicago winters?
Four-way interlocking panels seal gaps where ice can form and migrate, and aluminum's smooth surface sheds snow more readily than asphalt. Lincoln Square receives about 73 cm of annual snow and gusts up to 95 km/h; the four-way interlock design resists wind-driven snow infiltration. Because the material is roughly 96% lighter than traditional tile or slate, you won't need structural reinforcement—your roof can stay as-is. Custom snow guards are available if you want to control slide patterns on steep pitches.
Why would I choose aluminum over steel roofing if I'm worried about rust?
Aluminum roofing cannot rust because pure aluminum contains no iron—the mineral that oxidizes. What happens instead is a microscopically thin aluminum oxide layer forms on the surface, and here's the key: it self-heals when scratched. Your area sees about 1024 mm of annual rainfall and seasonal salt-carrying winds; this matters because Interlock panels receive Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides, a practice normally reserved for coastal installations. That dual-sided protection (30-year warranty against fading) means your roof actually improves with age in a freeze-thaw, wet climate.
Can a metal roof really handle hail, and will my insurance notice?
Interlock's Shake, Slate, and Tile profiles earn a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and The Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's genuine third-party verification, not marketing language. Some insurers offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofs; contact your agent with the UL listing number. Chicago's climate brings occasional spring hail, and aluminum's durability record (installed since 1998 across climates from coastal BC to Antarctica) gives adjusters confidence. The warranty covers impact loss without prorating, so you're protected regardless of age.
How well does metal roofing hold up to Chicago wind gusts?
Lincoln Square's typical daily-max winds run about 25 km/h with gusts reaching 95 km/h; Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlock system locks adjacent panels on all four sides, eliminating the uplift paths that separate shingles. Each panel interlocks mechanically—no nails through the face to weaken the seal. This geometry, combined with proper fastening into solid deck or existing sheathing, creates a unified diaphragm that wind consultants recognize as superior to the flex-and-separate behavior of traditional asphalt.
Does a metal roof that looks like tile require reinforcing my house?
No reinforcement needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile installs at roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it goes directly over most existing roofs without structural work. Compare that to real tile or slate, which often demand expensive framing upgrades. Your home's current structure can handle the weight. The Shake profile is even lighter at 0.58 lb/sq ft. This matters in older Lincoln Square homes where attic space is tight and modification costs mount quickly. You get authentic-looking profiles without the engineering headache or expense.
Will I really spend less time and money maintaining a metal roof than asphalt?
Yes. Asphalt shingles require annual inspections, gutter clearing after every weather event, and repairs starting around year 7. Metal roofs have no granule shedding, no moss or algae growth (aluminum is naturally antimicrobial), and no seasonal maintenance. Gutters stay cleaner because leaves don't stick to smooth metal. You'll inspect flashing and fasteners every few years—ten-minute walk-around—versus the ladder work asphalt demands. Over 50+ years in Lincoln Square's 1024 mm rain and 73 cm snow, you'll recoup labor costs and extend the lifespan of your gutters and siding from water damage prevention alone.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost if I'm selling in five or ten years?
Interlock's lifetime limited warranty and transferable 50-year coverage—transferable to the next owner—makes your home more attractive to serious buyers. Metal roofing rarely requires replacement during a typical ownership period, so buyers see a roof they won't touch for decades. Asphalt costs less initially but demands replacement every 15-20 years, meaning most buyers within ten years will face a $8,000–$15,000 decision soon after purchase. A metal roof eliminates that concern and differentiates your home in a competitive market. Over a 30-year hold, metal is cheaper because you buy it once; over five years, resale appeal and buyer confidence offset the higher installation cost.
How does metal roofing rate for fire safety?
Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and available in Class A fire classification—the highest rating. That matters in Cook County if you're near brush, or if local code requires enhanced fire resistance for retrofit situations. The aluminum substrate cannot burn, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating, verified under ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (reissued 2025), adds additional protection. Some homeowners' insurers give minor premium reductions for Class A roofs. Unlike asphalt, which contributes to fire spread, or wood shakes, which ignite, aluminum simply doesn't participate in combustion. If fire safety is a concern—whether personal, insurability, or code-driven—this is a genuine technical advantage.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than tearing off asphalt shingles?
Yes, because aluminum is recyclable at end-of-life and your roof doesn't end up in a landfill every 15-20 years. Interlock panels are roughly 95% recyclable, and aluminum retains value in scrap markets. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are tear-off-only; one residential replacement generates roughly two tons of waste per 1,000 sq ft. Over a 50-year lifespan in Lincoln Square's 3,094 annual sunshine hours and varied weather, you'll install one metal roof instead of three asphalt ones. The energy efficiency bonus—energy-efficient colors reflect solar heat at up to 0.55 initial reflectance—reduces cooling-season demand in summer months. CALGreen verification documents the reduced maintenance footprint.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Lincoln Square’s climate?
Yes. Lincoln Square averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
