  • Energy-efficient cool-roof performance lowers heat gain during Midwest heat waves and improves attic comfort and HVAC efficiency.
  • Solar-compatible design supports modern bracket-mounted photovoltaic systems without compromising weatherproofing.
  • Fully recyclable aluminum construction for homeowners prioritizing material recovery and lifecycle sustainability.
  • Premium architectural profiles replicate slate, cedar shake, and tile while also offering standing-seam options to match North Park curb appeal.
  • Lower lifecycle maintenance than asphalt shingles in North Park’s moisture-variable climate—fewer repairs and a longer service interval.
  • Backed by a Lifetime-Limited transferable warranty to protect long-term investment and support resale value.

I was surprised about the product, and hopefully in the future I will go for it and do my roof.

Review: July 5, 2016Completion: June 13, 2016

Between the time the contract was signed and the time I received a phone call about materials delivery was too long. John had said installation would probably be 8-10 weeks from order date. It was more toward the 10 week side. However, in the interim there was no communication from Interlock. So the 10 weeks of silence was kind of disconcerting. Probably a follow up call or two from Interlock would help.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in North Park

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in North Park, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in North Park.

Will a metal roof handle North Park's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?

Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure actually flexes with temperature swings rather than cracking like brittle materials do. North Park experiences roughly 69 freeze-thaw days per year, plus about 73 cm of snow, which puts real stress on roofs. Aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) expands and contracts smoothly across those cycles without the fatigue that splits asphalt, wood shakes, or tile. The four-way interlocking panels also allow independent movement at each seam, so stress doesn't concentrate at one weak point. That's why the Guardian Warranty explicitly covers cracking and splitting—because aluminum simply doesn't do either.

Can aluminum roofing rust the way steel does?

No. Aluminum contains no iron, so rust is physically impossible—iron oxide is what causes rust, and there's no iron to oxidize. When aluminum gets scratched or exposed, it forms an oxide layer naturally, and that layer heals itself over time, protecting the metal underneath. We coat both sides with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon (30-year warranty against chalking and fading), which adds another shield. This dual protection matters in Cook County's mix of 1024 mm rain yearly plus temperature swings—aluminum simply outperforms steel or galvanized materials in wet, variable climates. The Guardian Warranty covers rusting because that risk doesn't exist with aluminum.

How does a metal roof perform under North Park's snow load?

Metal sheds snow efficiently because ice doesn't bond as strongly to smooth aluminum as it does to asphalt or wood. North Park averages about 73 cm of snow annually, often compressed by freeze-thaw cycling across 69 days per year. The Interlock panels' profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, Standing Seam—are engineered for snow shedding without the weight liability of real slate or tile. The Tile profile, for instance, weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft (about 96% lighter than concrete tile), so your existing structure carries the load easily; no reinforcement needed. Snow slides off before it can ice-dam, and the lightweight design means structural stress stays minimal even during heavy accumulation.

Does a metal roof stay secure in Chicago-area wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist 120 mph sustained wind, and North Park's typical gusts reach about 95 km/h (59 mph)—well within that safety margin. The panels interlock on all four sides, so wind pressure can't peel a single panel free; uplift force is distributed across the entire roof assembly. When installed to spec (which Interlock Metal Roofing has done since 2001 in this region), the system handles the seasonal gust patterns typical of Cook County without movement or noise. Ice and snow shedding also reduces the weight imbalance that wind exploits on heavier roofs, adding a secondary benefit during spring storms.

Will a metal roof survive hail, and can I get an insurance break?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That rating comes from real lab testing, not marketing, so insurance companies recognize it. Many carriers offer discounts for Class 4 roofs because claims are rare. While North Park's climate data doesn't flag hail as a primary hazard, the metal roof's proven impact resistance often qualifies you for lower premiums than asphalt or wood shake would. Check with your agent once you choose Interlock; the UL listing and warranty documents support a discount request. Over a 30+ year roof life, those savings compound.

Is a metal roof worth the price when asphalt is cheaper upfront?

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt but lasts dramatically longer and requires far less maintenance. An asphalt roof typically needs replacement every 15-20 years; Interlock carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner (transferable for 50 years to the next owner). Factor in the cost of tear-off, landfill fees, and repeated re-roofing over 60+ years, and aluminum becomes the single investment, not a recurring expense. North Park's 1024 mm annual rainfall and 69 freeze-thaw days accelerate asphalt degradation; metal simply doesn't deteriorate that way. The Guardian Warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, and curling—all common failure modes in wet, freeze-thaw climates. Do the math over the life of your home, not the first year.

How much upkeep does a metal roof actually need?

Far less than asphalt or wood. Metal doesn't rot, crack, curl, or deteriorate from UV exposure the way asphalt does. No fungal growth or moss issues. No granule loss requiring periodic resealing. North Park's 3094 annual sunshine hours and roughly 1024 mm rain create ideal conditions for moss and algae on organic roofing, but aluminum's smooth surface and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating resist both. Occasional gutter cleaning and inspection of flashing is standard roof maintenance, not metal-specific. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance demands. Over a 50-year span, the time and money you don't spend on repairs, treatments, or premature replacement is substantial—and measurable.

Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles?

Yes, in most cases—that's one of aluminum's structural advantages. Because the Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and Tile profiles are exceptionally lightweight (0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft), Interlock installs over existing asphalt without reinforcement. This eliminates the cost and mess of tear-off and the landfill fees. The installation process typically takes days rather than weeks because there's no stripping and disposal step. Interlock Metal Roofing has completed this process throughout Cook County since 2001 and can advise on your specific roof's condition. A solid deck underneath (or repair of any soft spots) ensures proper support, but the aluminum profile itself adds negligible load—a major time and cost saving that asphalt or tile replacements can't match.

Does a metal roof add curb appeal and resale value?

Yes—it signals durability, low maintenance, and long-term value to buyers. Interlock's profiles replicate the visual character of slate, cedar shake, and Mediterranean tile, giving you architectural appeal without the fragility of those materials. A new roof is one of the first things buyers inspect, and a 50-year transferable warranty (via the Guardian's one-time transfer to the next owner) is a tangible selling point in a competitive market. North Park's freeze-thaw cycling and wet climate mean buyers are acutely aware of roof durability—aluminum's track record (manufactured since 1998, installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station) is credible proof. The visual distinction from basic asphalt, combined with documented longevity, typically justifies a premium or accelerates sale.

Is a metal roof fire-safe, and does that matter for insurance?

Yes. Aluminum is non-combustible; it cannot catch fire or spread flames. Class A fire classification (the highest available) is optional on Interlock profiles, and many homeowners choose it for insurance eligibility and peace of mind. North Park's building code references ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025, covering IBC/IRC), which confirms metal roofing compliance. Some insurers offer discounts for Class A-rated roofs because fire risk is genuinely lower. While wildfire isn't a primary threat in Cook County, the non-combustibility standard supports broader fire-safety ratings and can simplify your insurance application. It's a no-cost or low-cost upgrade that removes a class of failure risk entirely.

Is a metal roof a good choice for North Park’s climate?

Yes. North Park averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
