Review: June 8, 2018

I was surprised about the product, and hopefully in the future I will go for it and do my roof.

Review: July 5, 2016Completion: June 13, 2016

Between the time the contract was signed and the time I received a phone call about materials delivery was too long. John had said installation would probably be 8-10 weeks from order date. It was more toward the 10 week side. However, in the interim there was no communication from Interlock. So the 10 weeks of silence was kind of disconcerting. Probably a follow up call or two from Interlock would help.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in West Ridge

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in West Ridge, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in West Ridge.

Will a metal roof handle West Ridge's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's oxide layer actually strengthens under freeze-thaw stress rather than cracking like asphalt or wood. Cook County averages about 69 freeze-thaw days per year, a proven test of roofing durability. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy and dual-coat Alunar finish expand and contract uniformly across the entire panel without delamination, so the material outlasts the climate. The Guardian warranty explicitly covers cracking and splitting for the original owner's lifetime, transferable 50 years to the next owner.

How does a metal roof perform under West Ridge's snow load?

Metal roofing sheds snow and ice far more reliably than asphalt because its smooth, sloped surface prevents accumulation and ice dams that trap meltwater. West Ridge receives approximately 73 cm of snow annually, and wind gusts reach 95 km/h—conditions that cause metal panels to naturally slide snow off rather than hold it. The four-way interlocking design keeps panels locked together during thermal cycling, so ice dams don't push seams apart. Snow guards are available if you want to retain snow for aesthetic reasons.

Does metal roofing leak in heavy rain? West Ridge gets over 1000 mm annually.

No. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap and lock together with no exposed fasteners, creating a unified water barrier that outperforms asphalt in sustained rainfall. West Ridge receives about 1024 mm of rain per year—typical for Cook County—and metal roofing is engineered to shed this volume instantly. When installed over solid deck and quality underlayment, the layers work together to redirect water away from the structure. Standing Seam and Shake profiles are especially effective in high-rain environments because their vertical overlaps shed water downward without pooling.

Can a metal roof withstand West Ridge's wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h). West Ridge experiences typical gusts around 95 km/h—well within the roof's tested capacity—so the locking mechanism keeps every panel firmly anchored during seasonal storms. The interlocking design distributes lateral forces across the entire roof rather than relying on individual fasteners, which is why the wind warranty applies when installed to specification. Unlike asphalt shingles that lift and separate, these panels move as one system.

What's the hail rating on Interlock metal roofing, and could it lower my insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—meaning it withstands hailstones up to 1.5 inches without perforation. The warranty covers hail damage at this size. Some insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofing in hail-prone regions; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification to inquire. In West Ridge's climate, this rating protects against the widest range of ice-and-hail scenarios, giving you both physical durability and potential savings on your policy.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is required. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This lightness allows the roof to install directly over most existing asphalt roofs without adding load to rafters or trusses. Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are equally lightweight at 0.41 lb/sq ft and 0.58 lb/sq ft respectively. You get the dimensional beauty of premium materials with minimal structural impact, making Interlock accessible to homes of any age.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt?

Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance once installed. Asphalt shingles must be inspected annually for curling, cracking, and granule loss—problems aluminum simply does not face. Interlock's non-corrosive 3105-H24 aluminum and dual-side Alunar finish eliminate the need for sealing, coating touch-ups, or algae treatments. Rain naturally cleans the smooth surface. The CALGreen-verified design specifically reduces long-term maintenance burden, freeing you from the cycle of repairs that asphalt demands. Snow, ice, and the typical 69 freeze-thaw days per year do not degrade the material.

What's the warranty on Interlock metal roofing, and is it transferable?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no diminishing coverage over time. It's one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of protection from completion date. This dual-ownership structure reflects the roof's longevity: most homeowners install Interlock once and never replace it, while the transfer term protects resale value. The Alunar coating carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading, measured per ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards.

Who installs Interlock roofing in West Ridge?

Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Cook County region since 2001, providing factory-trained installation and local warranty support. The company works with West Ridge homeowners on all five profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile—and handles the full lifecycle from design through post-installation service. With over two decades of experience in this climate's 1024 mm rainfall and 73 cm snowfall, local installers understand freeze-thaw durability, proper drainage design, and snow-load management specific to the area. Contact the local team for a site assessment and warranty registration.

Is metal roofing fire-rated? Does it meet Illinois code?

Yes. Interlock aluminum roofing achieves Class A fire classification—non-combustible—and meets ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation (reissued 2025), which covers both IBC and IRC standards. This ensures code compliance across Illinois without special variances or additional fire protection costs. Non-combustibility is especially valuable in neighborhoods where wildfire risk or dense building proximity is a concern. Aluminum itself does not ignite, burn, or spread flame, so you're protected at the material level, not just the installation level. Your municipality recognizes this standard as the highest fire rating available.

Is a metal roof a good choice for West Ridge’s climate?

Yes. West Ridge averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
