Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Boxford, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
They have the highest quality product. They should let the homeowner know about anything that needs to be done in preparation for the roof. I had some stuff that was going to go in a dumpster and it needed to move. It would've been nice to know that ahead of time. I think our deck should've been covered better to eliminate any scratches or dents on the plastic decking material. The woman that coordinates all of it was very responsive and pleasant to talk to. Everything went well. The financing was very helpful. I was able to do a certain percentage for a year. It was very helpful when placing the order.
I would have liked to have the supervisor come out and do a final check on the job. The crew were hard workers and nice guys but English was not their first language. Asking for certain fixes wasn't always an easy task. When the crew was finished they were heading out to Springfield, I think, and it was a quick departure. I signed the final papers but I have since noticed that where they placed the cupola on our garage is not exactly where it was originally. Slightly off center. I accept responsibility for not being on top of this in the moment but I was focused on correcting other aspects of how the cupola was resting on the new roof.
Additional inspection of the roof in the pre-sale stage would likely have identified problems earlier. This would have let everyone plan more thoroughly.
Roof installed in late October of 2015. Start to finish a good experience. We knew going it what to expect for costing and everyone looking at a metal roof should expect high costs, but still gave it a small ding on overall costs :). The lead time to do the work was long but that expectation was clearly set during the contract negotiations and they were within 2 weeks of that date. Jennifer was a big help keeping me informed of scheduling and always responded within a day of any message left, if I didn't get her live on the phone. The crew was really good (Sergi, Dimitry and the guys) and worked 9-5 without missing a beat after a long daily commute to get to our house.. Considering all the nails, shingles and small metal pieces associated with this installation my yard was spotless. Even after they completed my walk around yielded about a dozen small pieces buried under leaves and to be expected.. Very pleased with that.. So far we're very happy with the experience. The roof looks amazing and we cannot wait for the snow to arrive. Description of work: removed 2 layers of shingles, replaced some damaged plywood after removal, complete roof coverage with ice & water barrier along with a 2nd protective layer then the metal roofing. We had a good sized roof, about 2800 sq. feet with alot of angles and dormers.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Boxford
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Boxford, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Boxford.
Will a metal roof handle Boxford's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?
Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure doesn't degrade under freeze-thaw stress the way asphalt, wood, or concrete does. Boxford experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw days per year, which is exactly the kind of cycling that breaks traditional materials. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. The Alunar PVDF coating resists both the expanding ice and the salt-laden thaw cycles typical of Massachusetts winters, and the four-way interlocking panels move slightly as a system rather than fighting each other, which keeps fasteners from loosening.
How does metal roofing handle Boxford's annual snowfall?
Interlock's lightweight profiles shed snow faster than asphalt because the smooth metal surface and standing-seam options reduce friction. Boxford averages about 84 cm of snow annually over about 1065 mm of rain, so snow load and melt cycles are real concerns. The aluminum panels weigh just 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile, so no structural reinforcement is needed even if snow sits longer than expected. Optional snow guards can be installed to control sliding safely. The interlocking design also prevents ice dams from lifting or separating the panels the way wind-driven ice can damage asphalt.
Can a metal roof withstand Boxford's worst wind gusts?
Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, which covers the extreme gusts documented in this region. Boxford's typical daily-max winds run about 22 km/h, but gusts can reach 130 km/h—that's within the roof's rated envelope when installed to spec. The interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors on all four sides, so no panel can be lifted or torn free by wind pressure. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 validates this performance under IBC/IRC wind load testing, and the design also prevents uplift at the eaves where wind damage typically starts.
Does hail impact rating matter for Boxford homeowners, and will my insurance care?
Yes on both counts. Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 rating is the threshold many insurers use for premium discounts, and your agent should verify your policy. While Boxford's climate doesn't include typical hail zones, the rating protects you against the occasional severe storm and may lower your annual premium, offsetting some of the roof's cost over decades. The aluminum's non-brittle surface simply doesn't dent, crack, or lose impact resistance the way asphalt or slate does, so you're not filing claims five years after installation.
Why doesn't aluminum roofing rust like steel roofing does?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; that's why military aircraft and coastal structures use it. When exposed, aluminum forms a thin oxide layer that self-heals if scratched—something steel roofing cannot do. Boxford receives steady moisture from about 1065 mm of rain annually plus 84 cm of snow melt, creating a corrosive environment for steel. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. The dual-coat protection is especially valuable near the North Shore, where salt air can travel inland—the coating resists salt spray far better than paint on steel.
Is a metal roof heavy enough to require structural upgrades to my house?
No—the opposite is true. Interlock's Shake profile weighs only about 0.58 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile profile (which visually mimics heavy clay or concrete tile) weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than the real thing. This means no structural reinforcement is required, and the roof often installs directly over existing asphalt shingles, saving labor and tear-off costs. Most older Boxford homes were framed for slate or wood shakes, which were heavier than modern asphalt; switching to lightweight aluminum metal roofing actually reduces strain on the structure. Younger framing handles aluminum easily, so weight is never a limiting factor here.
How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt or tile?
Metal roofing requires far less than asphalt or tile. Asphalt shingles need inspection every year, algae and moss removal every 3–5 years, and full replacement at 20–25 years. Wood shakes split and rot with freeze-thaw cycles like Boxford's 76 annual cycles, and concrete or clay tile cracks from impact and temperature swings. Interlock aluminum doesn't curl, split, crack, rot, or lose granules. Rain at 1065 mm per year and snowmelt naturally rinse dirt; a simple inspection every 5 years (after storms) is standard. The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so painting is never needed. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty covers the material for life, which means no major maintenance surprises.
Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in Boxford summers?
Yes, but moderately. Boxford averages about 3109 sunshine hours per year, and energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat rather than absorb it—initial solar reflectance reaches up to 0.55 for certain colors, and thermal emissivity measures 0.84, meaning the roof radiates absorbed heat efficiently. Compared to dark asphalt, which absorbs nearly all solar energy and retransmits it into the attic, an energy-efficiency metal roof reduces cooling load during summer peaks. The benefit compounds over decades: asphalt grows darker as it ages (losing reflectance), while Alunar PVDF maintains its reflective properties for 30 years. Boxford's mean temperature of 11°C suggests heating is the primary concern, but summer cooling gains still add up to measurable savings, especially on south-facing or top-floor spaces.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost over 40 or 50 years?
Metal roofing is a one-time investment that outlasts asphalt by decades, making it the last roof most homeowners install. Asphalt costs less initially but requires replacement every 20–25 years; removing and landfilling old shingles adds $1500–3000 per job. Metal's upfront cost is recouped through: no replacement cycle, minimal maintenance, potential insurance discounts from the UL 2218 Class 4 rating, energy savings (especially over 30–50 years as Alunar coating stays reflective while asphalt darkens), and transferable resale value. The Guardian warranty transfers 50 years of coverage to the next owner, which buyers now recognize as a major asset. Current financing here includes no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off the installation, making the math even stronger. Over 50 years, metal typically costs less than two asphalt replacements plus tear-off labor and environmental fees.
Who installs Interlock roofs in Boxford, and how experienced are they?
Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999—over 25 years of experience with New England weather, including Boxford's 84 cm annual snowfall, 1065 mm rain, and 76 freeze-thaw cycles. They understand local building codes, Essex County permit processes, and the specific challenges of coastal-adjacent climates. Installation follows ICC-ES ESR-1790 (the current IBC/IRC evaluation report, reissued 2025) and covers the full spectrum: new roofs, over-existing-roof installs, all five profile styles, and snow-guard placement. The installer also manages the Guardian warranty claim process and can coordinate any future panel repairs or expansions. Choosing a local, long-standing installer means you're not dealing with a national franchise unfamiliar with Boxford's building patterns or winter conditions.
