Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Crystal, Minnesota
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |

What our customers are saying:
Yes, would recommend, the house roof looks great. My project is being done in two stages, all is going as good as possible, I think.
Their tools and extensions are still sitting in my backyard.
Your presence on the internet is good, everything looks good. Keep doing what you are doing.
Coordination with the dumpster company; follow-up post install - we haven't even been given an Interlock sign to display anywhere.
An end of day wrap up communication would have been nice. We also were not really told about the quality of material they were using. If they want me to rate that they need to explain it. Also, if they could show me the roof visually some way after completion that would be nice. I am unable to physically get up there and look at it.
Well, the roof is on and I guess I owe you, folks, a testimonial. It looks great! We chose a black slate style shingle which accentuates our mansard roof very nicely with crisp, clean lines. We are getting lots of compliments from our neighbors. The best part is knowing that our roof will continue to look great for many, many years – long after conventional asphalt shingles would be cracking, curling, fading, streaking and collecting mold and mildew. The crew was first rate – very professional and efficient. It was fun to watch them work. Every single man seemed to know exactly what to do at all times. The process looked like a choreographed event. They were thorough and cleaned up after themselves at every step and, unlike some roofing jobs I’ve seen, they always immediately replaced what they tore out so that the house was never exposed to weather when they left the job at the end of the day. Finally, we really appreciated the “good faith” method of doing business with Interlock. We didn’t pay a dime up front or during the roofing process. Only after we had made a final inspection and approved the job were we asked for payment. In conclusion, I would highly recommend Interlock roofing to anyone replacing a roof or building a new house.
The communication is incredibly poor, mind-boggling poor. I would suggest improving the communication. I still haven't received my warranty or final payment statement. The sign is still in my yard. I don't want to throw it away. It's a nice big sign, and I'm sure they would like to use it. I didn't threaten them with anything.
They were courteous and very efficient. They did a fine job.
I'm really happy that I never have to think about a roof ever again. It looks great.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Crystal
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Crystal, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Crystal.
How does a metal roof handle Minnesota's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum metal roofing sheds snow efficiently and resists the damage that freeze-thaw cycling causes to asphalt shingles. Crystal gets about 95 cm of snow yearly and roughly 79 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions where asphalt becomes brittle and cracks. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels expand and contract as a unified system without the gaps that trap ice dams. The lightweight design (Slate profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement needed, and aluminum's oxide layer self-heals from scratches that salt and ice might inflict, staying watertight for decades.
Why is aluminum better than steel for Minnesota roofing?
Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust—period. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires coating maintenance to prevent rust from forming whenever that coating chips. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, giving you 30-year warranty protection against chalking and fading. In a climate like Crystal's, where you receive about 796 mm of rain annually and wind gusts reach 94 km/h, that dual-sided coating acts as extra insurance in wet, windy conditions—rust simply cannot develop, no matter how scratched the surface becomes.
Will a metal roof blow off in a Minnesota windstorm?
No. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Crystal's typical wind gusts reach about 94 km/h, well within the system's capability. The panels lock together on all four sides, creating a unified membrane that distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners at scattered points. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the assembly meets IBC/IRC code requirements, and the Guardian Warranty backs that performance—even in the occasional stronger gust, the panels stay secure.
Can my house support a metal roof without reinforcing the framing?
Yes, and that's one of aluminum's biggest advantages. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile—which mimics the visual weight of concrete or clay tile—installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it approximately 96% lighter than the real thing. This means most Crystal homes need zero structural reinforcement, and Interlock installs directly over your existing roof on many properties, saving you the cost and mess of a tear-off. Even the heavier profiles are dramatically lighter than traditional materials, so your home's framing sees no added strain while you gain a roof that lasts two or three times longer than asphalt.
Is a metal roof safer in a wildfire or house fire?
Metal roofing is non-combustible and available in Class A fire ratings—the highest classification available. Interlock's aluminum panels are inherently fire-resistant because aluminum itself is inorganic and will not ignite. If fire safety is a concern for your home, you can specify Class A materials. The ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms Interlock meets IBC/IRC fire-safety requirements. In a suburban Minnesota setting like Crystal, where wind gusts around 94 km/h can carry embers from neighboring fires, a non-combustible roof offers genuine peace of mind—asphalt shingles are Class C and far more vulnerable.
Does a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?
Yes, especially with Interlock's energy-efficient colors. Many Interlock profiles feature high solar reflectance (up to 0.55 in Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. These coatings reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. Crystal receives about 3,128 sunshine hours per year—enough to make that reflectance matter on your utility bills. A lighter-colored metal roof stays measurably cooler than dark asphalt under the same sun, reducing air-conditioning load and extending the life of your HVAC system.
What happens if hail damages my metal roof?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This protection often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because underwriters recognize that impact-rated roofing resists the damage that requires claims. Crystal's climate includes occasional spring hail, and unlike asphalt shingles (which dent easily and allow leaks) or composition shingles prone to cracking, Interlock's aluminum panels absorb impact without permanent deformation. The warranty even covers perforation, so even a severe hail event is covered material-wise—no surprises on your claim.
How long does a metal roof actually last, and what does the warranty cover?
Interlock comes with the Guardian Warranty: a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original homeowner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty transfers once (50 years from completion for the next owner), making it a genuine multi-generation roof. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years; even premium composition roofing rarely exceeds 25 years. Manufactured since 1998 and installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations, Interlock's track record demonstrates durability in extreme climates. For Crystal's 79 annual freeze-thaw days and 95 cm of snow, aluminum's stability—it doesn't become brittle or curl—means your roof is likely the last one you'll buy.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or cedar shake?
Metal roofing is nearly maintenance-free. Unlike asphalt shingles (which require periodic inspection for curling, cracking, and granule loss) or cedar shake (which needs cleaning and sealing to prevent rot), Interlock aluminum simply sheds dirt and debris with normal rain. Crystal's 796 mm annual rainfall keeps the roof clean naturally. The CALGreen certification confirms reduced maintenance needs. You might occasionally clear leaves from valleys, but you'll never need to re-coat, seal, or repair splits like wood roofing demands. The Alunar finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—meaning the coating stays protected far longer than asphalt recoating cycles.
How is a metal roof installed, and can it go over my existing roof?
Interlock installs like traditional roofing: over solid decking and underlayment, with fasteners driven through the panels into the structure. Because aluminum profiles are so lightweight—the Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft—they often install directly over your existing roof without tear-off, saving time and disposal costs. Installation takes days, not weeks, depending on roof size. The four-way interlocking system locks panels together, creating a unified waterproof assembly. No special equipment or exotic skills are required; Interlock Metal Roofing, serving the region since 2001, performs these installations routinely for Crystal-area homes. This means less disruption to your daily life and a lower overall project cost than a traditional tear-off-and-replace.
