Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Secret Cove, British Columbia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |

What our customers are saying:
Putting some more tarps around the house to catch the debris might have been helpful, however they cleaned up everything quite well. We look forward to enjoying our beautiful roof for many years to come. We appreciate the knowledgeable, professional, and thorough approach that everyone from Interlock roofing took with our job.
It is a fantastic product but expensive.
Mike was excellent. Five stars. Thank-you. Wish we could afford your product.
Better communication, knowing start date well in advance.
Not happy with Interloc. Not because of Mike, but because of the lack of follow through.Brian O'Donnell
Refer to the other comments made. I think Interlock Roofing could have improved their communication and scheduling. I had to call them continuously to find out what was going on when no one would show up or if there were any other discrepancies. I was satisfied with the final look. I think that it is fine but I'm not unhappy with the way the install took place. I would think they would have one crew to handle the job and coordinate between them.
shorter time between delivery of materials and completion of project very pleased with the roof and the way it plays with our Leafguard gutters. i suggested to Todd that interlock should look at picking up the local BC franchise as the Leafguard product is no longer available here. seams like a good fit to me, eh.
I would recommend Interlock Roofing if you plan on being the supervisor yourself. I'll use them again but I'll be there the whole time watching. They fell short of my expectations with the communication between supervisory Todd, the project manager, and the actual crews'. The communication was poor. The crews had a hard with English. The head crewman should have been looking at the work the men were doing and telling them to clean up instead of cutting corners. It was very sloppy work. They didn't seem to know what they were doing. I would like for Mike to touch base with me about my concerns I sent to him via email. It would have been nice for Mike to be there to support me. I am disappointed for him not stepping up.
As I was not on site photos during installation and progress reports would have been appreciated.
None Appreciate the happy demeaner of the crew.
I am likely to recommend Interlock Roofing because the product looks beautiful, the installation team were very professional, diligent, and hardworking and left the site nice and clean. I think communication as far as scheduling could be improved. Having regular and routine updates would have been ideal. Overall, I'm a satisfied, happy customer.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Secret Cove
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Secret Cove, British Columbia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Secret Cove.
Does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice buildup on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes—metal panels shed snow and ice far better than asphalt because of their smooth, interlocked surface and the way water runs off during thaw cycles. Secret Cove averages about 121 cm of snow annually with roughly 28 freeze-thaw days per year, creating exactly the conditions where metal roofing excels. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels prevent water infiltration even when ice dams form, and you can install optional snow guards if steep pitches concern you. Aluminum's lightness means the roof structure handles accumulated snow load without reinforcement, unlike slate or concrete tile.
Why won't my metal roof rust in the salty, wet Sunshine Coast climate?
Aluminum roofing cannot rust because aluminum contains no iron—the element that rusts in steel. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal, even when scratched. In coastal salt-air environments, the roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy resists corrosion far better than steel alternatives. Additionally, Interlock applies a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating to both sides of every panel, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. With 1680 mm of annual rainfall and coastal conditions, this dual-layer defense is why Interlock has installed panels from salt-spray homes to Antarctic research stations.
How does a metal roof perform in Secret Cove's 1680 mm annual rainfall?
Heavy rainfall is where metal roofing's four-way interlocking design shines—water runs off instantly and cannot pool or seep between panels like it can with asphalt shingles. The overlapping, mechanically interlocked seams create a continuous shed line that handles the Sunshine Coast's roughly 1680 mm of rain per year without leak risk. Install the roof over a solid deck with quality underlayment, and you get the same leak protection as asphalt but with zero deterioration of the roofing material itself. The metal panels won't absorb water, rot, or degrade under prolonged wet conditions the way organic materials do.
Can a metal roof hold up to Sunshine Coast windstorms?
Metal roofing is engineered for serious wind. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—well above Secret Cove's typical gusts near 119 km/h. The interlocking action distributes wind load across the entire roof structure, not just fastener points. Unlike asphalt shingles, which can lift and tear in gusts, metal panels stay locked together and flex without separating. This is why the ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790) and Intertek testing confirm the system's wind resistance for exposed coastal locations.
Does hail damage metal roofing, and can I save on insurance?
No—Interlock metal roofing holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available, and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Hail is rarely an issue on the Sunshine Coast, but the impact resistance means your roof survives whatever falls on it without denting, leaking, or losing function. Some insurers recognize this durability and offer modest premium reductions; contact your carrier with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating to ask. The aluminum's non-combustible Class A fire rating may also qualify you for discounts, depending on your policy.
Will I need to reinforce my home's structure to install a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement needed—that's one of metal roofing's biggest practical advantages. The Cedar Shingle profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile profile (which mimics heavy ceramic or concrete tile) weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft and is roughly 96% lighter than real tile or concrete. This means you can install a metal tile-look roof over most existing structures, even older homes, without engineering upgrades. In a location like Secret Cove that sees about 121 cm of snow per year, the light weight also reduces structural strain during heavy snow accumulation, while the panels shed water and ice far more effectively than heavy slate would.
Do metal roofs really help lower cooling costs on sunny Sunshine Coast days?
Yes—energy-efficient metal roofing colors reflect solar heat that asphalt absorbs. The Aged Copper Penny finish, for example, achieves up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity, meaning it bounces heat away and radiates absorbed heat quickly. With about 2922 sunshine hours per year on the Sunshine Coast, this reflectance adds up. You won't eliminate air-conditioning costs, but you'll reduce the cooling load during summer months. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms the energy benefit, and choosing a reflective color from Interlock's palette is free—you just pick it during the selection process.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need versus asphalt or wood?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance. Asphalt shingles degrade over 15–20 years and demand regular inspections, repairs, and eventual replacement; wood shakes split, rot, and need constant treatment in wet climates like the Sunshine Coast with 1680 mm of annual rain. Aluminum panels don't rot, split, curl, or crack—the Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against fading. The ICC-ES report confirms CALGreen verification for reduced maintenance. Your only routine task is clearing debris after storms and checking fasteners every 5–7 years. The metal itself is inert and self-healing, so weather damage that would require repairs on other roofing materials doesn't happen here.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt over 40 years?
Yes. Metal roofing costs more initially but saves money over the roof's life because you buy it once. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years and must be replaced twice in 40 years—each replacement includes tear-off labor, disposal, and new materials. Metal roofing, backed by Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner and transferable 50 years to the next owner), eliminates that cycle. Current regional promotion includes interest-free payments for 3 months and at least $2499 savings on installation. Over 40 years in Secret Cove's climate, one permanent metal roof beats two asphalt replacements in both cost and hassle.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Yes—aluminum roofing breaks the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle. Metal panels are approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, whereas asphalt shingles become landfill waste every 15–20 years. Over 40 years, a home with asphalt sees two full roof tearouts; metal roofing ends that waste. Interlock manufactures in Delta, BC, reducing transportation emissions for the Sunshine Coast. The aluminum is roofing-grade alloy (ASTM B209) engineered for decades of reuse or recycling, not disposal. If you eventually recycle your metal roof, the material returns to the aluminum supply chain. This closed-loop approach aligns with CALGreen sustainability standards and reflects growing demand for environmentally responsible building choices.
