Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Homewood, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Dear Mark, I would like to provide you some feedback on the first phase of work done on our project at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago Heights. Before going into the details of the work perforn1ed, I would like you to know how pleased I was putting together this project with your sale manager, John Mondschean. John’s a pleasure to work with, always prompt, courteous, and clear with feedback and follow-ups. He not only knew his product well but proved to be very helpful in overcoming the various issues of the job. John was able to meet our needs while staying within the budget by offering helpful suggestions and options. I could only hope to have such a knowledgeable, responsible person to work with on future projects. As for the first phase of work, installing a 50-year PVC membrane roof with insulation over the existing roof, integrating metal flashings and adding badly needed ventilation to the top flat area above our sanctuary. This job was performed by a group of tradesmen that took pride in their workmanship; not only did they arrive at the job site on time each workday, they never left without ensuring that the work site was clean and secure daily. For me, that was a big plus. I watched the installation and was pleased with the care utilized by the workmen. Roofing seams were straight, smooth and clean. Details cuts and welded fitting were secured around each of the skylights with care. I was pleased with your workers and their workmanship as witnessed on the job site. Mark, most of all, I’m pleased to inform you that my biggest pet peeve was adhered to without fault, Safety. Your workmen used proper fall protections with tie-offs, body harnesses, and safety lanyards. All ladders and guards were properly secured. At the completion of the job, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all scrap materials were removed from the work site. Thank you for a job well done. This job was well-managed and professionally carried out. I look forward to the second phase of our project in the fall.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Homewood
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Homewood, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Homewood.
Will a metal roof handle Homewood's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or degrading?
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it won't crack, split, or curl the way asphalt and wood do. Homewood sees about 70 freeze-thaw days per year—a real stress test for roofing. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is engineered for this kind of cycling. The oxide layer that forms naturally on aluminum actually self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) protects both sides of the panel. That's why Interlock panels have been installed from coastal salt-air climates to Antarctica since 1998 without fatigue failure.
How does a metal roof perform under Homewood's snow load and ice dam conditions?
Metal roofs naturally resist ice dam formation because the smooth, non-absorbent surface won't trap moisture or ice the way asphalt shingles do. Homewood averages about 68 cm of snow annually, and you'll want snow guards installed on steep profiles like Shake or Cedar Shingle to manage slides safely—ask your installer about placement. The four-way interlocking system keeps water moving downslope instead of pooling at seams. Aluminum weighs only 0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft (depending on profile), so even heavy wet snow doesn't overload your structure the way slate or concrete tile would.
Does Interlock's metal roofing system handle heavy rainfall without leaking?
The four-way interlocking design and solid deck installation keep rain out; Homewood receives about 1042 mm of rainfall yearly, and that's exactly the kind of continuous wet-weather exposure metal roofing was built for. Water runs downslope through the interlocks without pooling or finding seams. The Guardian warranty covers leak protection for the life of the roof, and because aluminum is non-porous (unlike wood shingles that absorb water), there's no degradation or rot risk. Installation over your existing roof (if structurally sound) adds a second layer of protection and saves the landfill impact of a tear-off.
Can metal roofing withstand Homewood's wind gusts and seasonal storms?
Interlock panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and Homewood's typical gusts reach about 93 km/h (58 mph)—well within safety margin. The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. This engineering is why the system earned ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) for IBC/IRC compliance. Even during spring and fall storms, the mechanical interlock keeps panels seated, while asphalt shingles and tile can lift, shift, or separate.
Does Interlock metal roofing get damaged by hail, and can it lower my insurance cost?
Interlock carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio means it absorbs impact without cracking or denting the way asphalt, wood, or tile does. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer discounts on metal roofing premiums; ask your agent to compare quotes before and after installation. Homewood gets the occasional severe storm, but your roof won't need replacement after one hail event—a major financial advantage over the 20-30 year asphalt replacement cycle.
Do I need to reinforce my home's structure to support a metal roof that looks like tile or slate?
No. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and Mediterranean Tile profiles weigh 0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than authentic slate, concrete, or clay tile. That means most Homewood homes can have the look of premium materials without structural reinforcement, and you can install Interlock over an existing asphalt roof if the deck is sound. This saves tens of thousands in framing upgrades and labor. Aluminum's light weight also reduces long-term stress on trusses and joinery, extending the structural life of your home.
How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt or wood shingles?
Interlock metal roofing needs virtually no maintenance—no seasonal cleaning, no moss or algae treatment, no patching. Asphalt shingles in Homewood's 1042 mm annual rainfall and ~3025 sunshine hours degrade from UV exposure and moisture, requiring inspection and repair every 5-10 years. Wood shingles split and curl during 70 freeze-thaw cycles yearly. Metal won't rot, rust, or split. The Guardian warranty is non-prorated for the original owner—meaning there's no annual inspection fee or maintenance claim process. Your only upkeep is clearing gutters, which you'd do anyway.
Why can't Interlock metal roofing rust like steel roofing, and does that matter in Homewood?
Interlock uses 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 roofing-grade aluminum alloy (ASTM B209)—aluminum contains zero iron, so it cannot rust chemically. Instead, a naturally occurring oxide layer forms on the surface and self-heals if scratched, creating permanent corrosion resistance. Steel roofing rusts from the inside out if the coating is breached. In Homewood's wet climate (1042 mm rain annually, 68 cm snow), aluminum's non-corrosive nature means your roof won't weaken structurally over decades the way steel does. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading—extra protection in coastal and freeze-thaw regions.
What's the real lifespan of Interlock roofing, and what does the warranty actually cover?
The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—basically all material failure modes. It's also one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage from completion date. That means you're buying the last roof you'll install. Interlock panels manufactured since 1998 are still performing on homes installed in the early 2000s. In Homewood's environment—70 freeze-thaw cycles yearly, regular snow and rain, seasonal gusts to 93 km/h—aluminum's resistance to degradation means you won't face the 20-30 year replacement cycle of asphalt.
Who installs Interlock roofing in Homewood, and how long does a typical installation take?
Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Homewood area and surrounding Cook County region since 2001, with direct experience installing across Chicago's diverse neighborhoods and weather patterns. A typical residential installation takes 2-5 days depending on roof size, pitch, and whether you're installing over an existing roof (which saves tear-off labor). The installer will inspect your deck, discuss profile and color options—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile are all available locally—and walk you through the process. Call for a free inspection and quote; ask about financing options for long-term value purchases.
