Review: January 25, 2016 Completion: December 30, 2016

Dear Mark, I would like to provide you some feedback on the first phase of work done on our project at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago Heights. Before going into the details of the work perforn1ed, I would like you to know how pleased I was putting together this project with your sale manager, John Mondschean. John’s a pleasure to work with, always prompt, courteous, and clear with feedback and follow-ups. He not only knew his product well but proved to be very helpful in overcoming the various issues of the job. John was able to meet our needs while staying within the budget by offering helpful suggestions and options. I could only hope to have such a knowledgeable, responsible person to work with on future projects. As for the first phase of work, installing a 50-year PVC membrane roof with insulation over the existing roof, integrating metal flashings and adding badly needed ventilation to the top flat area above our sanctuary. This job was performed by a group of tradesmen that took pride in their workmanship; not only did they arrive at the job site on time each workday, they never left without ensuring that the work site was clean and secure daily. For me, that was a big plus. I watched the installation and was pleased with the care utilized by the workmen. Roofing seams were straight, smooth and clean. Details cuts and welded fitting were secured around each of the skylights with care. I was pleased with your workers and their workmanship as witnessed on the job site. Mark, most of all, I’m pleased to inform you that my biggest pet peeve was adhered to without fault, Safety. Your workmen used proper fall protections with tie-offs, body harnesses, and safety lanyards. All ladders and guards were properly secured. At the completion of the job, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all scrap materials were removed from the work site. Thank you for a job well done. This job was well-managed and professionally carried out. I look forward to the second phase of our project in the fall.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Glenwood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Glenwood, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Glenwood.

Does a metal roof handle Glenwood's snow and ice buildup?

Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively, and the lightweight construction (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed even with Glenwood's average 68 cm of annual snow. Unlike asphalt, aluminum won't absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycling during your typical 70 freeze-thaw days per year doesn't degrade the material. The smooth panel surface and interlocking design prevent ice dams by promoting drainage, protecting your home's interior through repeated winter cycles.

Can aluminum roofing rust in Illinois winters?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it develops a thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—a property built into the metal itself. With Glenwood's 1042 mm of annual rainfall and significant moisture exposure, this is a genuine advantage over steel roofing, which oxidizes. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading, so your roof resists corrosion from repeated wet-freeze cycles without iron's vulnerability.

How does metal roofing survive freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's crystalline structure and the PVDF fluorocarbon coating system work together to withstand repeated expansion and contraction. Glenwood experiences about 70 freeze-thaw days per year, which stresses traditional materials like asphalt and wood shakes, causing them to crack and curl. Interlock's ESR-1790 evaluation confirms compliance with IRC standards for freeze-thaw climates, and the aluminum won't absorb water that would expand when frozen. Your coating remains flexible and intact through decades of temperature swings because PVDF resists both UV degradation and thermal stress.

Will a metal roof blow off in Illinois wind gusts?

The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), well above Glenwood's typical gusts of about 93 km/h recorded in the region. The mechanical interlock—not fasteners alone—distributes wind loads across adjacent panels, so a single gust won't lift your roof. This design means your roof remains secure during spring and fall storms when wind speeds spike, and insurance companies often recognize this superior wind resistance, potentially lowering your policy cost compared to asphalt.

Do I need to reinforce my home's framing for a metal roof?

No—that's one of aluminum's major structural advantages. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Glenwood installers can install Interlock over your existing asphalt roof without adding trusses or beams because the load is negligible compared to traditional heavy materials. This also reduces labor costs during installation. The light weight never compromises durability; it's an engineering benefit that lets you upgrade your roof's performance without structural work.

What's the hail rating, and will my insurance cover damage?

Interlock aluminum roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In regions prone to severe hail, this rating often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because the material resists damage that would penetrate asphalt or wood. Glenwood's climate includes spring storms with hail potential, so having documented Class 4 protection gives you both durability and a clear record to show your insurer. Verify with your carrier, but many offer credits for Class 4-rated roofing.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Aluminum requires far less than asphalt, wood shake, or tile. There's no annual debris removal from shingle deterioration, no moss or algae treatment, no re-caulking of seams. Glenwood's 3025 annual sunshine hours and 1042 mm rainfall won't degrade the PVDF coating, which carries a 30-year warranty against fading. A simple occasional rinse removes pollen and dust—that's it. The ESR-1790 evaluation lists CALGreen verification for reduced maintenance, meaning you skip the costly upkeep cycles that asphalt demands every 15-20 years, freeing your budget for other priorities.

What's the actual lifespan and warranty of an Interlock roof?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for you as the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—periods when asphalt typically fails. It's also transferable: the next owner receives 50 years of coverage from completion. Given Glenwood's 70 annual freeze-thaw cycles and moderate rainfall (1042 mm), aluminum outlasts asphalt by 30+ years because it doesn't absorb water or degrade from UV cycling. This is truly your last roof; you'll never tear off and replace it into a landfill.

Is metal roofing actually better for the environment?

Yes—approximately 95% of aluminum is recyclable, so at end-of-life your roof becomes feedstock for new products rather than landfill waste. Glenwood homeowners also skip the asphalt tear-off cycle: most Interlock installations go over your existing roof, eliminating one disposal event immediately. Over the roof's 50-year transferable lifespan, you avoid multiple asphalt replacements that would otherwise bury tons of waste. The aluminum itself is infinitely recyclable without quality loss, and the PVDF coating is chemically stable, so your roof's end-of-life impact is minimal compared to materials that degrade into environmental burden.

Who installs Interlock roofing in Glenwood?

Interlock Metal Roofing has served the region since 2001, bringing over two decades of experience with Illinois weather. They understand Glenwood's freeze-thaw demands, typical wind patterns around 93 km/h gusts, and the specific installation details (proper interlocking, flashing, underlayment) that ensure your roof performs as warranted. Local installers also manage warranty service and understand permit requirements in Cook County. Choosing a manufacturer-authorized local team ensures your Guardian Warranty is applied correctly and your roof is installed to ESR-1790 standards from day one.
