Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Steger, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Dear Mark, I would like to provide you some feedback on the first phase of work done on our project at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago Heights. Before going into the details of the work perforn1ed, I would like you to know how pleased I was putting together this project with your sale manager, John Mondschean. John’s a pleasure to work with, always prompt, courteous, and clear with feedback and follow-ups. He not only knew his product well but proved to be very helpful in overcoming the various issues of the job. John was able to meet our needs while staying within the budget by offering helpful suggestions and options. I could only hope to have such a knowledgeable, responsible person to work with on future projects. As for the first phase of work, installing a 50-year PVC membrane roof with insulation over the existing roof, integrating metal flashings and adding badly needed ventilation to the top flat area above our sanctuary. This job was performed by a group of tradesmen that took pride in their workmanship; not only did they arrive at the job site on time each workday, they never left without ensuring that the work site was clean and secure daily. For me, that was a big plus. I watched the installation and was pleased with the care utilized by the workmen. Roofing seams were straight, smooth and clean. Details cuts and welded fitting were secured around each of the skylights with care. I was pleased with your workers and their workmanship as witnessed on the job site. Mark, most of all, I’m pleased to inform you that my biggest pet peeve was adhered to without fault, Safety. Your workmen used proper fall protections with tie-offs, body harnesses, and safety lanyards. All ladders and guards were properly secured. At the completion of the job, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all scrap materials were removed from the work site. Thank you for a job well done. This job was well-managed and professionally carried out. I look forward to the second phase of our project in the fall.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Steger
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Steger, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Steger.
Will a metal roof hold up through Steger's freeze-thaw winters?
Yes—aluminum is freeze-thaw proof because it expands and contracts uniformly without absorbing moisture, so it won't split, crack, or curl like asphalt or wood shingles do. Steger experiences about 70 freeze-thaw days per year, which is where most roofing fails. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is also naturally flexible, allowing seasonal movement without structural stress. Combined with the four-way interlocking panel system, there's no seam separation or ice dam-driven leaks to worry about during your region's roughly 68 cm of annual snow.
How does Interlock handle heavy snow and ice dams in Illinois winters?
The four-way interlocking design and smooth surface shed snow and ice efficiently, preventing the dams that form on shingles with porous surfaces. Steger receives about 1042 mm of rain and 68 cm of snow yearly, and because aluminum panels interlock tightly, water runs off cleanly rather than pooling behind ice buildup. Optional snow guards can be added for architectural styles where you want controlled release. The lightweight construction—about 96% lighter than ceramic tile—means your roof system can handle multiple snow loads without strain, and installation over your existing roof avoids costly structural work.
Can Interlock metal roofing resist the wind gusts in this area?
Absolutely. Steger's typical wind gusts reach about 93 km/h, and Interlock panels are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together mechanically, distributing wind load across the entire system rather than relying on fastener shear alone. This design, verified under ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790, means your roof stays secure through spring storms and winter cold-weather wind events without uplift or panel separation—a real issue with single-locked or standing-seam systems in high-wind regions.
Will hail damage my metal roof, and can I get an insurance break?
No and yes. Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and is warranted against perforation even from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many homeowners in hail-prone areas qualify for insurance discounts because the roof resists damage that typically triggers claims on asphalt or wood. While Steger's hail frequency isn't extreme, the Class 4 rating means you're protected against worst-case events. Talk to your insurer about whether your metal roof qualifies for a rate reduction; some carriers recognize the reduced claim likelihood and pass savings to you.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal roofing?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily lightweight—the Shingle profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile profile, which mimics the heaviest traditional roofing material, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft. That's approximately 96% lighter than concrete or ceramic tile, so your existing roof framing supports the new roof without modification. This also means Interlock installs directly over most existing asphalt roofs, saving you thousands in tear-off labor and landfill fees while cutting installation time and disruption to your home.
What's the warranty, and how long will this roof actually last?
The Guardian lifetime limited warranty is non-prorated for the original owner and covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once to the next owner with a 50-year term from completion, which adds real resale appeal and peace of mind. Interlock has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998 with installations ranging from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica, so field history backs the promise. With the 30-year coating warranty (Alunar PVDF, ASTM D4214/D2244 tested) and aluminum's inherent non-corrosion properties, your roof will likely outlast the warranty itself—giving you decades of protection over Steger's 1042 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw cycles.
How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to shingles or tile?
Far less than asphalt, wood, or ceramic. Asphalt shingles require regular inspection for curling, cracking, and granule loss—especially after Steger's 70 annual freeze-thaw days—plus gutter cleaning and moss treatment. Wood shakes split and rot. Ceramic tile cracks and leaks around mortar joints. Aluminum panels never curl, rot, split, or require sealant reapplication. Your only maintenance is occasional gutter cleaning and a rinse if heavy dust accumulates—something the region's 3025 annual sunshine hours and regular 1042 mm rainfall handle naturally. CALGreen verification confirms the reduced maintenance burden, so you truly buy this roof once and forget it.
How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?
Installation typically takes a few days to a week depending on roof size and complexity, and yes, Interlock installs directly over your existing asphalt shingles in most cases—no costly tear-off required. The lightweight aluminum panels (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) don't stress your structure, and the four-way interlocking system speeds installation because panels lock together rather than requiring individual fastening. Your existing roof provides the solid deck underlayment that keeps metal roofs silent in Steger's frequent rain, so you don't hear noise like poorly installed metal roofs do. The installer will assess flashing and gutter condition during inspection, but there's no structural work, minimal cleanup, and you're done faster and cheaper than a traditional tear-off-and-replace.
Is metal roofing really better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Yes, measurably. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, versus asphalt shingles—which end up in landfills by the million tons annually—and the panels last 50+ years, so you're not replacing the roof every 15–20 years and sending old material to waste. Aluminum production does require energy, but the long lifespan and recyclability mean far less material consumption per year of protection. Over a 50-year horizon, one Interlock roof prevents five or six asphalt tear-offs and their associated landfill impact. Since Steger receives about 1042 mm of rain and 68 cm of snow annually, your roof faces real weather wear; aluminum's non-degrading properties mean no performance loss and no landfill burden across decades of service.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost in the long run?
Yes, because you're buying your last roof. Asphalt shingles cost less initially but need replacement every 15–20 years, totaling tens of thousands over a 50-year period plus disposal fees and installation labor. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty and proven durability through Steger's challenging freeze-thaw cycles (about 70 per year), heavy snowfall (~68 cm), and frequent rainfall (1042 mm) mean one installation lasts your ownership and transfers value to the next owner. Energy-efficient energy-efficiency colors with 0.84 thermal emissivity also lower cooling costs over time. When you factor in no maintenance, no early replacement, no roof leaks, and the transferable 50-year warranty term, the per-year cost of Interlock is significantly lower than the asphalt-shingle replacement treadmill—plus you gain design choice, weather protection, and true peace of mind.
