Review: January 25, 2016 Completion: December 30, 2016

Dear Mark, I would like to provide you some feedback on the first phase of work done on our project at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago Heights. Before going into the details of the work perforn1ed, I would like you to know how pleased I was putting together this project with your sale manager, John Mondschean. John’s a pleasure to work with, always prompt, courteous, and clear with feedback and follow-ups. He not only knew his product well but proved to be very helpful in overcoming the various issues of the job. John was able to meet our needs while staying within the budget by offering helpful suggestions and options. I could only hope to have such a knowledgeable, responsible person to work with on future projects. As for the first phase of work, installing a 50-year PVC membrane roof with insulation over the existing roof, integrating metal flashings and adding badly needed ventilation to the top flat area above our sanctuary. This job was performed by a group of tradesmen that took pride in their workmanship; not only did they arrive at the job site on time each workday, they never left without ensuring that the work site was clean and secure daily. For me, that was a big plus. I watched the installation and was pleased with the care utilized by the workmen. Roofing seams were straight, smooth and clean. Details cuts and welded fitting were secured around each of the skylights with care. I was pleased with your workers and their workmanship as witnessed on the job site. Mark, most of all, I’m pleased to inform you that my biggest pet peeve was adhered to without fault, Safety. Your workmen used proper fall protections with tie-offs, body harnesses, and safety lanyards. All ladders and guards were properly secured. At the completion of the job, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all scrap materials were removed from the work site. Thank you for a job well done. This job was well-managed and professionally carried out. I look forward to the second phase of our project in the fall.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Richton Park

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Richton Park, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Richton Park.

Will a metal roof handle Richton Park's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's non-corrosive nature makes it exceptionally durable through repeated freeze-thaw stress. Cook County experiences about 70 freeze-thaw days per year, which causes asphalt and wood to crack and curl as they expand and contract. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without absorbing water, so it resists the splitting that degrades traditional materials. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) is specifically formulated for thermal cycling, and Interlock's 30-year Alunar coating (PVDF) maintains flexibility through temperature swings from snow to spring sunshine.

How does a metal roof perform with snow load and ice dams in Illinois winters?

The four-way interlocking panel design sheds snow and ice effectively, and the lightweight construction prevents structural strain from accumulation. Richton Park receives about 68 centimeters of snow annually; a concrete tile roof of the same visual profile would weigh roughly 25 times more per square foot, while Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter. The smooth, low-friction metal surface accelerates melt-off during freeze-thaw cycles typical of Cook County's 3,025 annual sunshine hours, reducing ice dam formation.

Can a metal roof withstand Richton Park's wind gusts?

The four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Cook County gusts typically reach 93 km/h (about 58 mph), well within the panel's structural margin. The interlock system distributes wind load across multiple fastening points and panel edges, preventing uplift common in asphalt shingles, which rely on adhesive and nails alone. This design also qualifies the roof for wind-resistance discounts on homeowners insurance in areas prone to seasonal gust events.

Why won't an aluminum roof rust like steel metal roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element responsible for iron oxide (rust) formation. Unlike steel metal roofing, which requires paint or coatings that eventually degrade, pure aluminum develops a microscopically thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched or damaged. Richton Park's 1,042 mm of annual rainfall and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles accelerate corrosion in steel and promote rot in wood; aluminum's oxide barrier remains effective for decades. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides provides additional protection, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244).

What's the actual lifespan and warranty coverage for an Interlock metal roof?

Interlock offers a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty transfers once, giving the next owner 50 years from completion, which protects resale value across two generations. Manufactured since 1998 and installed in environments from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica, Interlock panels prove durability far beyond the 20–25 year lifespan of asphalt. In Richton Park's 70 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 68 cm snow seasons, aluminum's resistance to seasonal stress ensures the roof will likely outlast the home itself.

Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed; aluminum's extreme lightness is one of its primary advantages. The Interlock Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile (visually identical to clay or concrete tile) at 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than the real tile it mimics. Most existing roofs can support the installation directly without modification, saving thousands in framing upgrades. This lightweight design also reduces long-term structural fatigue from the seasonal snow load (68 cm annually) and wind gusts (up to 93 km/h) common to Cook County.

How does hail impact resistance affect insurance and repair costs?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize Class 4 roofing as a risk-reduction feature and offer discounts on homeowners premiums. In Richton Park, where spring and summer storms are routine, a hail-resistant roof eliminates the repair costs and claims hassles that plague asphalt shingles. The four-way interlock design distributes impact energy across the panel structure, and the 0.58–0.59 lb/sq ft mass absorbs force without buckling—a durability advantage over lighter, single-lock metal systems.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal roofs require significantly less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Asphalt shingles need regular inspections and repairs beginning in year 5–7, and wood shakes require annual treatment and replacement of rotted pieces. Interlock aluminum panels need only occasional debris removal and inspection—no sealing, no algae treatment, no cupping or cracking repairs. Richton Park's 1,042 mm annual rainfall runs off the smooth surface; the panels don't absorb water, so moss and algae rarely take hold. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation verified CALGreen compliance for reduced-maintenance roofing, meaning lower ownership costs over the roof's lifetime.

Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Interlock aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, and aluminum scrap commands market value—unlike asphalt shingles, which typically end up in landfills. A typical asphalt roof tear-off generates 6–8 tons of waste per 1,000 sq ft; metal roofing often installs over the existing roof, eliminating that waste entirely and saving disposal costs. Aluminum's durability (often 50+ years, vs. 20–25 for asphalt) means fewer roof replacements per building lifetime, reducing the total material and energy footprint. For Richton Park homeowners concerned with environmental impact, metal roofing aligns with CALGreen sustainability standards and the circular economy.

Can a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it, lowering cooling demand. Interlock's Aged Copper Penny finish achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council. In Richton Park's temperate climate (mean 10.7°C, about 3,025 annual sunshine hours), reflective metal roofing reduces the temperature differential between attic and living space during warm months. Asphalt shingles absorb most solar radiation and release it into the home; metal roofing's high reflectance keeps that heat outdoors. Over a 50-year lifespan, the cumulative cooling savings often offset the higher initial cost.
