Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Monhegan

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Monhegan, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Monhegan.

Will a metal roof hold up to Maine's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum is immune to freeze-thaw damage because it contains no iron and cannot rust or rot. Monhegan experiences about 85 freeze-thaw days per year, which devastates asphalt and wood shingles through repeated expansion and contraction, but aluminum's oxide layer simply self-heals when scratched. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in every Interlock panel (ASTM B209) was chosen specifically for coastal and extreme-climate durability. Your roof won't split, crack, or curl as wood does, and it won't absorb moisture that turns to ice.

How does metal roofing handle Monhegan's heavy snow and ice buildup?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow and ice safely without leaks or backing, even under Monhegan's typical 126 cm annual snowfall. The smooth aluminum surface prevents ice dams by allowing melt to flow freely, unlike asphalt's rough texture that traps moisture. Because an Interlock roof weighs only about 0.41 lb/sq ft (for the Shingle profile), heavy snow loads don't strain your structure—you won't need costly reinforcement. Snow guards are available if you want to control avalanching in high-wind zones.

Can a metal roof rust in a coastal Maine climate?

No metal roof rusts because Interlock panels are pure aluminum alloy—they contain zero iron, the element that causes rust. Salt-air coastal homes from British Columbia to Antarctic research stations have run Interlock roofs for decades without corrosion. Monhegan's 1039 mm annual rainfall and coastal exposure would devastate steel roofing, but aluminum's protective oxide layer regenerates instantly when scratched. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (applied to both sides for salt-air protection) adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading.

Will Interlock metal roofing stay attached in Monhegan's coastal winds?

Absolutely. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered and warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph—well above Monhegan's typical gust speeds of 168 km/h (about 104 mph). The interlocking design creates redundancy: even if wind lifts one panel, the four-point mechanical connection to neighbors keeps your roof intact. This isn't just a marketing claim—it's backed by ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (2025 reissue) and the Guardian lifetime limited warranty covering wind damage up to 120 mph.

Does Interlock metal roofing reduce insurance costs after hail damage?

Your insurer will appreciate that Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofing because claims are rare. Unlike asphalt, which dents and bruises easily and requires replacement after moderate hail, aluminum's hardness and elasticity let it absorb impacts without functional damage. Check with your agent about discounts; the documentation from our local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., will help them process the claim faster.

Can a metal roof lower my heating and cooling costs in Maine?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors have a solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. In Monhegan's 3076 annual sunshine hours, that reflection adds up year-round. Summer cooling savings are the most obvious benefit, but winter performance matters too: the reflective coating bounces solar gain onto south-facing walls and windows when you want it. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy performance, and published solar-reflectance listing means EPA-verified data backing every color choice.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Over a roof's full lifespan, Interlock is the last roof you'll buy. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years and require tear-off and landfill disposal twice—Interlock lasts your lifetime with a non-prorated Guardian warranty and zero replacement cycles. Factor in the cost of three asphalt replacements, plus labor, dumpsters, and disposal fees over 60 years, and aluminum becomes the lower-cost choice. Current financing removes that upfront barrier: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 is available through our local installer. One roof instead of three pays for itself.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need in Maine?

Virtually none. Unlike asphalt roofs (which need regular inspections and algae treatment) or wood shakes (which need staining and splinter repair), Interlock aluminum requires only occasional rinsing to remove salt spray and debris. Monhegan's 1039 mm annual rainfall handles most cleaning naturally. The Alunar PVDF coating resists mildew and chalking across the state's range of temperature and humidity. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. Because there's no cracking, curling, or deterioration to monitor, you won't find yourself on a ladder every spring—you'll spend those hours enjoying your home instead.

Can Interlock metal roofing be installed over my existing roof?

Yes. Interlock's exceptional lightness—as little as 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—means installation over most existing roofs needs no structural reinforcement. Your contractor (Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves the region with 25+ years of combined experience since 1999) will assess your decking and slope, but in the vast majority of Monhegan homes, removal isn't required. This cuts labor time, avoids landfill waste, and reduces your project cost. Installation typically spans 2–4 days depending on roof size and weather. The installer will detail the exact timeline during your consultation.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable—at end of life (which may never come, given your lifetime warranty), your roof returns to the aluminum supply chain instead of a landfill. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are torn off and buried every 15–20 years, contributing millions of tons to waste annually. Over 60 years, a typical home generates three asphalt tear-offs; Interlock generates zero. The non-prorated Guardian warranty—including a 50-year transferable term for the next owner—encourages long-term stewardship. Choosing aluminum breaks the landfill cycle and respects Monhegan's natural coastal environment.
