Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Trevett

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Trevett, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Trevett.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow efficiently while the lightweight design—about 96% lighter than concrete tile—eliminates structural stress even after Trevett's typical 126 cm of annual snowfall accumulates. The smooth profiles allow snow to slide cleanly rather than creating ice dams, and the aluminum itself thrives through the region's 85 freeze-thaw days each year because it cannot rust or degrade from repeated moisture cycling. Snow guards are available if you need them, but the metal surface and panel geometry mean you won't face the rot, splitting, or ice-dam leaks that plague asphalt and wood shakes in this climate.

Why choose aluminum roofing over steel in coastal Maine conditions?

Aluminum contains no iron—it physically cannot rust, even in salt air or after heavy rain. Trevett receives roughly 1039 mm of annual rainfall, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both panel sides (including the underside) adds a 30-year warranty against chalking or fading under those wet conditions. When the aluminum's protective oxide layer is scratched, it self-heals naturally; steel roofing, by contrast, requires ongoing maintenance and will eventually corrode beneath any coating break. For homeowners who want to buy their roof once and never replace it, aluminum's resistance to the freeze-thaw and moisture stress of Maine's climate is genuinely irreplaceable.

Will a metal roof hold up to Trevett's winter storms and coastal gusts?

The four-way interlocking panel system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, well above the region's typical gust extremes of 168 km/h (about 104 mph). The interlocking geometry means wind pressure cannot lift or separate panels the way it can with shingles; the system works as one cohesive unit anchored to your deck. Interlock has installed roofs from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station, so Maine's winter storms—where wind combines with 126 cm of snow and roughly 18 km/h mean wind speeds—are well within the roof's design envelope. You'll have the peace of mind that comes from hardware that simply does not fail in these conditions.

Can my home's frame support a metal roof, or do I need expensive structural work?

The Interlock Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb per square foot, and even the heavier Tile profile weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means no structural reinforcement is needed, and the roof can install directly over most existing asphalt shingles without any frame upgrades. For a typical Trevett home carrying 126 cm of seasonal snow, the metal roof's weight is negligible compared to the snow load your home already handles. You avoid the $5,000–$15,000 in structural engineering and reinforcement that tile or slate would require, making aluminum the only realistic metal-tile alternative for existing homes.

Does freeze-thaw cycling damage aluminum roofing over time?

Freeze-thaw damage—the expansion and contraction that cracks asphalt, splits wood shakes, and degrades concrete tile—simply does not occur in aluminum. The material's crystalline structure accommodates thermal cycling without degradation, and roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is specifically engineered for this stress. Trevett experiences about 85 freeze-thaw days annually, yet aluminum panels installed there since 1999 by Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) show no cracking, curling, or loss of integrity. The Alunar coating maintains its 30-year protection through those cycles, so your roof's appearance and water-shedding remain unchanged across 25+ years of Maine winters.

What warranty comes with an Interlock metal roof, and how long will it really last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original homeowner—meaning it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no deductible and no step-down in coverage over time. If you sell, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, a feature that adds tangible resale value. Aluminum panels installed in 1998 are still performing in the field, and the ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) confirms the material's durability under code. This is simply the last roof you will buy for your home.

What happens if a major hailstorm hits Trevett, and how is the roof protected?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches in diameter. Class 4 rating means the roof resists impact damage that would dent or crack asphalt, wood, or tile, which often leads to water intrusion and expensive claims. Many insurance companies offer discounts on metal roofs with Class 4 ratings because claims are so rare; check with your agent about potential premium reductions. In Maine's climate of about 3,076 sunshine hours but also significant moisture and occasional severe weather, the combination of impact resistance and non-corrosive aluminum means hail damage won't initiate rust or secondary deterioration like it does in steel-based systems.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal requires virtually no maintenance: no annual inspections for loose shingles, no moss or algae treatment, no wood-shake replacement, and no seasonal gutter cleaning of asphalt granules. The smooth, sloped aluminum surface sheds Trevett's 1,039 mm annual rainfall and 126 cm of snow without pooling water or debris accumulation. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is rated for 30 years without chalking or fading, so you won't need repainting or touch-ups. A simple occasional rinse removes salt spray or pollen; that's genuinely it. Asphalt shingles require roof inspections every 3–5 years and replacement every 15–20 years, while wood shakes need fungicide application and individual piece replacement after freeze-thaw damage. Metal simply outlasts maintenance cycles.

Will an Interlock metal roof lower my cooling costs or help with heating in Maine?

energy-efficient colors deliver thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), which reflects heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into the home. This reduces cooling load in spring and early fall, and the reflective property means less thermal stress on the roof structure through 3,076 annual sunshine hours. In Maine's heating-dominated climate, the primary benefit is durability rather than cooling savings—the cool-roof design simply means the roof reaches lower peak temperatures, reducing thermal cycling stress and extending the life of the coating and fasteners. The metal's low thermal mass also prevents the radiant heat buildup that shortens asphalt roof life in direct sun, a real advantage over Maine's long spring and fall periods.
