Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Edgecomb

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Edgecomb, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Edgecomb.

How does a metal roof handle Edgecomb's heavy snow — won't the snow just slide off and damage what's below?

Metal roofs shed snow, but you control it. Edgecomb averages about 126 cm of snow per year, and the Interlock panels' four-way interlocking design creates a unified surface that sheds cleanly rather than pooling water like asphalt. You can install snow guards along lower edges to manage slide timing — especially important over walkways or decks. The lightweight aluminum (Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) actually handles snow loads beautifully without structural upgrades, so there's no added cost for reinforcement like there would be with concrete or slate tile.

Does freeze-thaw cycling damage aluminum metal roofing in Maine winters?

No — aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw cycles. Edgecomb experiences about 85 freeze-thaw days annually, and aluminum's self-healing oxide layer is unaffected by temperature swings that crack asphalt or degrade wood. The alloy used (roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24) was selected specifically for this stress. Combined with the 30-year Alunar coating warranty and the Guardian's lifetime limited material coverage against cracking and curling, your roof survives repeated freezing far better than traditional materials.

Why do people say aluminum can't rust? Will salt air near the coast affect my metal roof in Edgecomb?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron — rusting requires iron oxidation. Instead, aluminum forms a microscopically thin, self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal beneath. This is why Interlock installs coastal roofs from salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station without rust concerns. Edgecomb's maritime climate is handled by the dual-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating, applied to both panel faces for extra defense against salt spray. You get lifetime limited coverage against rusting — something steel roofing cannot offer.

Can a metal roof survive Edgecomb's winter winds and coastal gusts?

Yes — the Interlock system is engineered for severe wind. Edgecomb's gusts reach about 168 km/h, and the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The panels lock together on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than allowing individual panels to lift. Installation to spec is critical, so working with the local installer — Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., serving since 1999 — ensures your roof meets those performance standards in your exact environment.

With over 1000 mm of annual rain in Maine, won't a metal roof leak?

Edgecomb receives about 1039 mm of rain annually, and the four-way interlocking panels shed water reliably without pooling. Metal roofs installed over solid deck and proper underlayment direct water to gutters as asphalt does — the interlocking design prevents water from entering seams. Unlike asphalt shingles that degrade and allow leaks over time, aluminum panels remain smooth and impervious to moisture infiltration. Combined with the Guardian warranty coverage for leak protection and proper flashing installation by your local contractor, a metal roof actually outperforms traditional materials in heavy rain retention.

Does hail damage metal roofs? Could I save on homeowners insurance?

Metal roofs are tougher than you'd expect in hail. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 — the highest impact rating available — and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurance companies recognize this durability and offer discounts on metal roof premiums. Contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ICC-ES ESR-1790 code compliance documentation; underwriters often apply rate reductions for Class 4 impact protection. Over a 50-year lifespan, those savings compound significantly.

I've heard metal roofs are heavy — will my house need structural reinforcement?

Actually, the opposite: Interlock's aluminum is extraordinarily lightweight. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates traditional heavy tile, installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft — about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means you can install it directly over most existing roofs without any structural upgrades or the thousands of dollars that reinforcement would cost. The Shingle profiles are even lighter at 0.41 lb/sq ft. Edgecomb homeowners who want tile's visual appeal but can't support its weight find aluminum offers the best solution.

How often do I need to maintain a metal roof compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal requires far less. Asphalt shingles deteriorate from UV exposure, requiring regular inspections and repairs. Wood shakes and shingles split, curl, and rot — especially under Edgecomb's 126 cm annual snow and 85 freeze-thaw days. Aluminum panels resist all three failures and don't degrade from the sun (the Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading). A metal roof needs occasional gutter cleaning and an inspection every few years — that's it. The Guardian's lifetime limited warranty means you're not paying for repairs to material defects over your ownership.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost over asphalt shingles?

Yes — it's your last roof purchase. Asphalt lasts 15-25 years and requires tear-off, hauling, and reinstallation; metal lasts 50+ years and installs over existing roofs, saving removal costs. Across a typical ownership, you'd replace asphalt 2-3 times; metal requires one installation. Add the Guardian's lifetime limited, non-prorated warranty (transferable for 50 years to the next owner), minimal maintenance costs, potential insurance discounts, and energy savings from the energy-efficient colors' 0.84 emissivity, and the per-year cost drops below asphalt. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or get 10% off installation — reducing your entry cost immediately.

Is metal roofing really more eco-friendly than asphalt?

Yes, fundamentally. Asphalt shingles end the tear-off-to-landfill cycle repeatedly over your home's life; Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable and breaks that pattern. One metal roof installation means no future shingle waste entering landfills. At end-of-life (decades away), the panels are recycled into new aluminum products rather than buried. Edgecomb homeowners choosing metal reduce their landfill footprint by multiple tons over 50 years — all while avoiding the manufacturing emissions of repeated shingle replacements. CALGreen verification confirms the reduced maintenance burden and material longevity.
