Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Squirrel Island

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Squirrel Island, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Squirrel Island.

Will a metal roof handle Maine's freeze-thaw cycles better than asphalt or traditional tile?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking, splitting, or curling—the failure modes that plague asphalt and clay in freeze-thaw environments. Squirrel Island experiences about 85 freeze-thaw days annually, a cycle that degrades conventional roofing over time. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy maintains its integrity through thousands of these transitions because metal flexes rather than fractures. The four-way interlocking panel design also sheds ice and water efficiently, reducing the static stress that accelerates freeze damage. The Guardian Warranty explicitly covers splitting and cracking—conditions asphalt and tile cannot match.

How does a metal roof perform under Squirrel Island's snow loads and ice buildup?

The smooth, slippery surface of metal panels naturally sheds snow and ice rather than allowing it to accumulate and compact into dangerous loads. Squirrel Island receives about 126 cm of snow annually, and the metal's low friction coefficient means snow slides off before it hardens into ice dams that back water under shingles. Unlike asphalt, which traps heat differently, metal reflects and conducts heat evenly across the roof plane, reducing the uneven melting that creates ice dams. Optional snow guards are available if you want snow to remain on the roof for insulation or aesthetic reasons, but the default behavior—safe shedding—is a major safety and maintenance advantage in a climate with this much winter precipitation.

Can a metal roof withstand Squirrel Island's coastal wind gusts?

Yes, without question. Squirrel Island experiences typical gusts up to 168 km/h, and Interlock's roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panel design—where each panel locks to its neighbors on all four edges—distributes uplift forces across the entire roof assembly rather than concentrating stress at fastener points. This mechanical redundancy is why coastal installations from salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations remain secure year after year. The warranty covers wind-driven rain penetration and panel blow-off, giving you confidence that your roof won't fail or leak during the severe coastal storms this region encounters.

Does a metal roof prevent leaks during Squirrel Island's heavy rainfall?

Heavy rain protection depends on installation detail, not material. Squirrel Island receives about 1039 mm of rain annually—a moderate-to-high precipitation zone—and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are designed to shed water downslope without pooling. When installed by a qualified contractor over solid decking with proper underlayment, the sealed panel-to-panel joints and fastening through the flat (non-exposed) valleys eliminate the leak pathways that plague exposed-fastener metal roofs. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 documents the assembly's water-shedding performance. Leaks in metal roofing almost always trace to improper flashing at penetrations or poor workmanship, not the panels themselves. Your local Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. installer, serving this region since 1999, knows the details that keep coastal homes dry.

Why won't my metal roof rust if it's made of aluminum in a salty coastal environment?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes. Instead, aluminum develops a protective oxide layer when exposed to air; if scratched, that layer self-heals within weeks. The Alunar fluorocarbon finish (70% PVDF, applied to both sides of every panel) adds a second barrier, especially valuable in salt-air environments like Squirrel Island. This dual-layer protection is why Interlock roofing has been installed on homes from coastal British Columbia to Antarctic research stations for over 25 years without rusting. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires constant maintenance to prevent rust—a costly burden in a climate with 1039 mm of annual rain and frequent salt spray. The 30-year coating warranty against fading and chalking ensures the finish remains protective through years of coastal weather.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt shingles or tile?

Virtually none beyond occasional inspection. Asphalt shingles degrade year-round—granules wash away, seals fail, and they typically require replacement every 15–25 years. Ceramic or clay tile cracks, breaks, and needs individual piece replacement. Interlock aluminum roofing requires no chemical treatment, no sealant reapplication, no granule replacement, and no impact repair. Twice yearly, rinse off debris or salt residue (important in coastal areas) with fresh water. That's it. The roofing-grade aluminum alloy and Alunar finish resist the corrosive effects of Squirrel Island's rain and freeze-thaw cycles without active maintenance. The Guardian Warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, and cracking—problems you'll never face. This is CALGreen-verified reduced-maintenance roofing, translating to real savings in your time and long-term costs.

Is my house strong enough to support a metal roof, or will I need expensive structural reinforcement?

Your house almost certainly needs no structural reinforcement. Interlock's aluminum panels weigh just 0.41 lb/sq ft (Shingle profile) to about 0.59 lb/sq ft (Tile)—roughly 96% lighter than the concrete or clay tile they replicate. Even homes with older framing can support this weight without upgrades. By comparison, asphalt shingles weigh 2–3 lb/sq ft, and slate or clay tile can weigh 10–15 lb/sq ft, both requiring structural engineers to assess feasibility. Squirrel Island's 126 cm of snow annually translates to a design snow load that aluminum roofing handles easily due to its minimal base weight. Better yet, Interlock installs over most existing roofing—no costly tear-off or structural work. Your local Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. installer can confirm whether your home is a candidate in minutes, usually without engineering expense.

Will hail damage my metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?

Interlock roofing earns a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 is rare; most asphalt shingles are Class 1 or 2, and many tile products don't rate well for impact. This superior impact resistance sometimes qualifies metal roofing for homeowners insurance discounts; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification to explore savings. In Squirrel Island's maritime climate, damaging hail is less common than in inland thunderstorm zones, but when it occurs, aluminum's dent-resistance and the warranty's perforation coverage mean repairs are minimal or unnecessary. The non-combustible aluminum construction (Class A fire rating available) may also unlock discounts depending on your policy. Over a 50-year roof life, these insurance savings compound substantially.

Is a metal roof really worth the extra upfront cost?

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt shingles but less than slate, clay tile, or high-end asphalt products. The real value emerges over the roof's life. Asphalt typically lasts 15–25 years and requires landfill disposal, adding replacement and environmental costs. Interlock carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—meaning no surprises if failure occurs in year 25 or year 45. The warranty transfers once (50 years from completion) to the next owner, supporting resale value. Annual maintenance costs are negligible. Over 50 years, a single Interlock installation likely costs less than three asphalt roofs plus tear-off and disposal. When you add zero structural reinforcement needed (thanks to ~96% lighter weight than tile) and potential insurance discounts, the long-term math favors metal decisively. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation, making entry cost manageable.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing on Squirrel Island, and how experienced are they?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999, meaning they've installed hundreds of roofs through Squirrel Island's coastal weather cycles and know the specific flashing, venting, and installation details required for durability in Maine's freeze-thaw, salt-air environment. They understand local code enforcement (ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 compliance), permit requirements, and regional building practices. Equally important, they stand behind their work with factory training and accountability. The difference between a metal roof that sheds water perfectly for 50 years and one that leaks in year five often comes down to installation quality—flashings, underlayment, fastening sequence, and workmanship. Your local installer's 25-year track record in this specific climate is your best assurance of long-term performance. Current promotion: contact them for no-interest financing until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation.
