Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Westport Island

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Westport Island, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Westport Island.

Does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice the way asphalt does?

Metal roofs actually outperform asphalt in snow and ice because the smooth, hard surface sheds snow faster and prevents ice dams more effectively than soft, porous shingles. Westport Island receives about 126 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 85 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which causes asphalt to degrade over time as water penetrates and refreezes inside the material. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to 120 mph wind speeds, so heavy snow loads that slide off won't damage the roof. The panels are nonporous—water cannot seep into the substrate—meaning ice dams release more readily, and your gutters stay functional through winter.

Why don't aluminum metal roofs rust like steel ones, especially near salt water?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, it forms an invisible oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched. Westport Island sits in a coastal environment where salt spray accelerates corrosion in steel and steel-fastened roofs, but Interlock's 3105-H24 roofing-grade aluminum alloy resists that salt air naturally. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both sides of every panel and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—adds a second protective barrier against coastal moisture. Since the company has installed roofs on coastal salt-air homes and even an Antarctic research station, the material is proven in the harshest corrosive conditions.

How does aluminum roofing handle Maine's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?

Aluminum's crystalline structure allows it to expand and contract through temperature swings without cracking, splitting, or curling the way asphalt and wood-based materials do. Westport Island experiences approximately 85 freeze-thaw days per year, a cycle that causes asphalt to become brittle and wood shakes to check and split. Interlock's aluminum panels move uniformly with temperature changes because aluminum has high thermal conductivity, so stress doesn't concentrate at one point. The Guardian warranty explicitly covers cracking, curling, and splitting for the original owner's lifetime—a guarantee the manufacturer can only offer because aluminum simply doesn't fail under freeze-thaw stress the way organic and asphalt products do.

Can my Westport Island house handle a metal roof, or will I need expensive structural work?

No structural reinforcement is needed, even if your home was built for asphalt. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb per square foot—approximately 96% lighter than traditional concrete or clay tile—so it installs safely over most existing roof structures without additional support. The Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles are even lighter. The engineered four-way interlocking system distributes the light load evenly across your existing framing, which easily supports aluminum compared to the 700+ pounds per square foot that tile or slate demands. This means you avoid the $5,000–15,000 in structural reinforcement costs that traditional heavy materials often require, and installation happens faster because contractors can work over your existing roof without dismantling.

Will a metal roof stay put during Maine coastal gusts?

Westport Island experiences typical daily-max winds around 18 km/h with gusts reaching 168 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking design—where each panel clips securely to its four adjacent neighbors—prevents lift and lateral movement that can tear asphalt shingles off or expose fasteners. Independent testing to UL 997 confirms the system's wind resistance, and the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation (reissued 2025) verifies installation meets current building codes. Because the panels are so light and the interlocking so secure, wind-driven rain and debris don't find seams or fastener holes to exploit.

Interlock metal roofing holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Most homeowners find that Class 4 impact protection qualifies them for insurance discounts on their premium because the material is proven to withstand impacts that would crack or shatter asphalt or slate. While aluminum can dent slightly in extreme hail, dents do not create leaks or compromise the roof's integrity the way punctures in asphalt do. Many carriers recognize the durability advantage and offer lower rates or waive the hail deductible entirely; it's worth calling your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification to ask about your specific policy.

Can a metal roof get dented by hail, and will my insurance cover it?

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt over the life of my home?

A metal roof costs more initially but saves money over time because you buy it once and never replace it. Asphalt lasts 15–25 years and requires tear-off, landfill fees, and disposal costs every time; Interlock's aluminum carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner and transfers 50 years to the next owner, meaning your home is covered for generations. Factoring in avoided replacement labor, disposal, and storm damage repairs, the lifetime cost of metal is substantially lower. Right now, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. is offering no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making the entry price easier to manage while you benefit from 3,076 annual sunshine hours in Westport Island that a reflective metal roof captures for energy savings year after year.

What maintenance does a metal roof actually need in Maine?

Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no moss scraping, no slate or shake replacement, no tar-patching. Interlock's nonporous aluminum surface sheds debris naturally; annual inspection and gutter cleaning are all you need. Unlike asphalt, which degrades from UV and moisture infiltration, or wood shakes, which split and rot with Westport Island's 1,039 mm of annual rainfall and freeze-thaw cycling, aluminum stays intact indefinitely. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (tested to ASTM D4214), so color stays vibrant without power-washing or sealant reapplication. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation notes the material as CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meaning your roof becomes a set-it-and-forget-it asset instead of a recurring maintenance chore.

Will a metal roof stay cooler and save on air conditioning in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat away from your home instead of absorbing it the way dark asphalt does. The Aged Copper Penny finish achieves up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council to reduce cooling costs by deflecting the sun's energy rather than trapping it in your attic. With 3,076 annual sunshine hours in Westport Island, that reflection compounds across every season. Metal also conducts heat efficiently away from the roof surface, so attic temperatures stay lower, your air conditioning doesn't work as hard, and you benefit from stable interior temperatures year-round. Over a 50-year roof lifespan, the cumulative energy savings often equal or exceed the material cost difference against asphalt.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Westport Island, and how long have they been in business?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999—the same year Interlock was expanding across North America. That 25-year track record means your local installer understands Maine's harsh winters, coastal salt spray, and heavy rainfall, and they're familiar with the specific code requirements and structural conditions of Lincoln County homes. They handle everything from initial roof assessment through installation and warranty service, so you're not coordinating with an out-of-state contractor unfamiliar with local building departments. Currently they're offering no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, giving you flexibility to start your roof upgrade now and spread payments later while the snow season is fresh on your mind.
