Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Sheepscot, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sheepscot
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Sheepscot, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Sheepscot.
Does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice buildup better than asphalt?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because their smooth, interlocking surface prevents ice dams from forming. Sheepscot receives about 126 cm of snow yearly plus roughly 85 freeze-thaw cycles that break down asphalt shingles over time. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels stay locked in place even as snow shifts, and you can add snow guards if desired. The lightweight design (Cedar Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement needed, so installation is straightforward even in difficult Maine winters.
Will freeze-thaw cycles in Maine damage an aluminum metal roof?
Aluminum actually thrives through freeze-thaw stress because it has no water absorption and expands/contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. Your region experiences about 85 freeze-thaw days annually, which would devastate wood shakes or asphalt shingles but leaves aluminum unharmed. The 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy was designed precisely for these conditions. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, protects through decades of Maine's thaw-freeze-thaw cycles, which is why Interlock panels have been installed from coastal homes to Antarctica.
Does aluminum rust in coastal Maine climates with salt spray?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it develops a microscopic oxide layer that actually protects the metal and self-heals if scratched. This is why Interlock applies the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating to both sides of every panel—extra crucial in salt air. Sheepscot, in coastal Lincoln County, gets about 1,039 mm of rain annually, creating wet conditions that would rust steel roofing within years. Interlock has shipped thousands of panels to salt-spray coastlines and Antarctic research stations where steel would have corroded long ago. The Guardian Warranty explicitly covers rusting, giving you lifetime peace of mind.
Can heavy rainfall cause leaks in a metal roof installed over my existing shingles?
Metal roofing is inherently leak-resistant because water runs off the interlocking panels and drains into your gutters rather than pooling. Sheepscot's annual rainfall of about 1,039 mm flows off a sloped metal roof far faster than through asphalt. When installed to spec over your existing roof (no tear-off required), the four-way interlocking system creates a continuous barrier—each panel overlaps its neighbors, shedding water like fish scales. The ESR-1790 code evaluation confirms the installation method for IRC/IBC compliance. Experienced local installers ensure gutters and flashing are sized correctly for Maine's wet climate.
Will an aluminum metal roof stay on during Maine's severe wind gusts?
Interlock metal roofs are engineered to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph and are warranted to that level. Sheepscot's typical gusts reach about 168 km/h (roughly 104 mph), so you have a safety margin beyond your region's normal wind loads. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together mechanically—each panel grips its neighbors—so the entire roof acts as one unified system rather than individual shingles fighting the wind. Even in extreme gusts, the panels stay locked. This mechanical strength comes from the panel geometry itself, not fasteners alone, making wind-resistance inherent to the design.
Does a metal roof reduce hail damage and insurance costs in Maine?
Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Maine's hail risk is lower than the interior Northeast, severe storms do occur. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 roofing because the risk of claims drops dramatically. The aluminum panels absorb impact without cracking or splitting like asphalt or wood. Your local Interlock installer can discuss your specific insurance company's discounts and provide the UL 2218 documentation needed to claim them.
Can reflective metal roofing actually save money on cooling costs in Maine?
Metal roofing with reflective coatings reduces heat absorption compared to dark asphalt, lowering cooling loads during Sheepscot's roughly 3,076 sunshine hours annually. Interlock's energy-efficient colors achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), which the Cool Roof Rating Council verifies. Maine's mean temperature of 8.7°C keeps cooling costs modest compared to southern states, but reflective coatings still cut AC usage on hot summer days and reduce roof surface temperature by 30–50°F. Over 50 years, that adds up, especially when combined with lower maintenance costs versus asphalt.
What makes Interlock's warranty different from typical asphalt or metal roof warranties?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner—non-prorated, meaning no depreciation schedule. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The next homeowner receives a 50-year transferable term from roof completion, which significantly boosts resale appeal. Traditional asphalt roofs carry 20–30 year prorated warranties that drop to zero after half that time. Since your roof protects your home through about 85 freeze-thaw cycles per year in Sheepscot, a non-prorated lifetime warranty eliminates the risk of being uninsured when you need it most.
How much maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually require compared to asphalt or wood?
Aluminum metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance beyond twice-yearly gutter cleaning—no algae removal, no shingle replacement, no moss treatment, and no rotting wood to repair. Asphalt shingles degrade under Maine's 85 annual freeze-thaw cycles and need frequent repairs; wood shakes split and invite rot in wet climates like yours. Interlock's four-way interlocking design sheds debris and moisture automatically. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty protects the finish with no repainting or resealing needed. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance requirements. Over a 50-year lifespan, maintenance savings alone often exceed the upfront cost difference from asphalt.
Can my existing roof frame handle a metal roof, or do I need expensive structural reinforcement?
No structural reinforcement is needed for aluminum metal roofing because the panels weigh extraordinarily little. The Cedar Shingle profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile—which replicates the look of heavy clay or concrete tile—weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft (roughly 96% lighter than actual tile). Asphalt shingles weigh 2–3 lb/sq ft, so switching to Interlock actually reduces roof load. Most homes can install metal roofing directly over existing asphalt, avoiding the cost and disruption of tear-off and structural work. Your local Interlock installer can confirm your specific roof's capacity in minutes.
