Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Head Tide

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Head Tide, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Head Tide.

Does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to shed snow and ice safely, and aluminum's non-corrosive properties make it ideal for Head Tide's approximately 126 cm annual snowfall and 85 freeze-thaw days per year. Steel roofs corrode and weaken under this cycling; aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, so repeated freezing, thawing, and salt-laden snow won't compromise integrity. The panels' smooth surface and lightweight design—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft—prevent ice damming stress that damages heavier materials. Snow guards and proper installation ensure safe shedding while protecting landscaping and structures below.

Why can't aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofs?

Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust chemically. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 certified), which naturally forms a protective oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—even in coastal salt air or after Head Tide's 1,039 mm annual rainfall. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel, adding a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires constant protective coatings; once those fail, rust accelerates. For Maine's wet, freeze-thaw climate, aluminum's corrosion immunity translates to predictable, maintenance-free decades of performance.

Can a metal roof survive repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?

Absolutely. Head Tide experiences approximately 85 freeze-thaw days per year—a harsh cycle that splits wood shakes, cracks asphalt, and causes concrete tile to spall. Aluminum's crystalline structure and elastic properties allow it to expand and contract without damage; it doesn't absorb moisture, so ice cannot form within the material itself. The four-way interlocking design also accommodates thermal movement without stress concentration. Interlock's ESR-1790 ICC-ES evaluation confirms compliance with IBC/IRC standards for freeze-thaw regions. Wood and concrete roofs degrade visibly after a decade of Maine's pattern; aluminum panels maintain their protective integrity indefinitely.

Will a metal roof stay secure in Maine's winter and coastal winds?

Yes. Head Tide's typical gusts reach 168 km/h, and Interlock's panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking system creates a unified structural assembly—each panel locks mechanically to its neighbors, distributing wind loads across the entire roof rather than concentrating stress at fasteners. This design is why Interlock has successfully protected homes in coastal salt-air environments and Antarctic research stations since 1998. Asphalt shingles lose adhesion and tear in sustained gusts; metal panels lock tight. For Lincoln County's seasonal wind exposure, this engineered redundancy delivers measurable peace of mind.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft and the Mediterranean Tile profile—which replicates the aesthetic of traditional clay or concrete tile—weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than actual concrete or clay tile. Head Tide homes built for standard asphalt roof loads can safely accommodate metal panels without additional framing costs. This light weight also means Interlock installs directly over most existing roofs, eliminating tear-off labor and landfill disposal fees. Concrete tile requires expensive structural upgrades; metal delivers the appearance with zero reinforcement burden. It's one reason metal roofing is the practical choice for renovation and new construction alike.

How does a metal roof's total cost compare to asphalt over 30 or 50 years?

Metal roofing costs more upfront but eliminates the asphalt cycle entirely. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15-25 years and requires tear-off, disposal, and reinstallation—expensive and wasteful. Interlock's Guardian warranty offers lifetime limited coverage to the original owner, transferable for 50 years from completion to the next owner. No material failures, no re-roofing. Over a 50-year horizon, a homeowner avoids two or three full asphalt replacements, plus maintenance labor. Interlock's current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, reducing the entry cost. Factor in Head Tide's 1,039 mm annual rainfall and 126 cm snow—conditions that shorten asphalt life—and metal becomes the lower lifetime cost choice.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal roofing requires virtually none. Interlock aluminum doesn't degrade from UV, doesn't split or curl like wood shakes, and doesn't absorb water like asphalt. Head Tide's approximately 3,076 annual sunshine hours and 1,039 mm rainfall would cause asphalt to oxidize and wood to rot; aluminum simply sheds both. Asphalt requires periodic repairs, nail replacement, and debris clearing; wood shakes demand sealing and treatment against mold. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating on Interlock panels is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking—the finish survives. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. Over decades, the labor and material costs for routine asphalt or wood maintenance easily exceed the initial difference in metal roof price.

Will hail damage a metal roof, and can it lower my insurance costs?

Interlock panels carry UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This proven durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts on comprehensive or homeowners' policies; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation. Maine's hail risk is lower than the Great Plains, but when it does occur, asphalt and wood shingles dent, split, and require replacement. Metal panels absorb impact without permanent damage. Combine durability with potential premium reductions and a 50-year transferable warranty, and you've protected your home and your resale investment from weather events that would otherwise trigger costly repairs or claims.

What makes the Interlock warranty different from asphalt roof warranties?

The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. One-time transferable for 50 years from completion to the next owner. Most asphalt warranties are prorated (coverage drops yearly), expire after 20-30 years, and don't transfer. Interlock's warranty reflects the product's actual lifespan: aluminum doesn't rot, doesn't rust, and doesn't age out. In Head Tide's severe climate—85 freeze-thaw cycles, 126 cm snow, and 168 km/h gusts annually—an asphalt roof is typically exhausted before the warranty ends. Metal roofing outlasts the warranty by decades. It's the only roof you'll buy for your home and the last one your heirs will inherit intact.

How does a metal roof handle Head Tide's heavy rainfall without leaking?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels create a sealed assembly; water cannot penetrate the mechanical joints. With approximately 1,039 mm of rain annually, Head Tide homes need roofing that sheds water completely. The panel profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, and Standing Seam—each include integrated drainage channels that direct water to gutters. Panels install over solid decking with underlayment, just like asphalt roofing, so thermal expansion and contraction don't open seams. Metal's smooth surface also means no moss growth, no debris pockets, and no decomposition that trap moisture like asphalt or wood. Fasteners are concealed by the overlap design, eliminating the leak points that plague exposed-fastener metal roofs. Properly installed Interlock panels deliver asphalt-level weather protection with superior durability.
