Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Riverton, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Riverton
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Riverton, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Riverton.
How does a metal roof handle Riverton's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow reliably because aluminum conducts heat differently than asphalt, reducing ice dam formation common in regions with about 121 cm annual snowfall and 83 freeze-thaw days. The lightweight design (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your existing structure bears no additional stress even when snow accumulates. Unlike wood shake, aluminum won't split or crack during the freeze-thaw cycling that Riverton experiences roughly 83 days yearly. Snow guards can be added if you prefer controlled snow release.
Why won't freeze-thaw damage aluminum metal roofing like it damages asphalt and wood?
Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust or rot from water infiltration during freeze-thaw cycles—the fundamental failure mode of asphalt and wood in cold climates. Its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, providing continuous protection through Riverton's approximately 83 annual freeze-thaw days. The material's crystalline stability means repeated expansion and contraction from temperature swings between freezing and thawing won't degrade it. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating adds 30-year protection against weather damage, independent of freeze-thaw stress.
Can a metal roof withstand Riverton's wind and storm gusts?
Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, well above Riverton's typical daily-max winds around 19 km/h and recorded gusts to about 121 km/h. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing lateral forces across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This mechanical integration is why the system performs at research stations and coastal properties where wind is continuous and severe. Your roof stays secure through Maine's occasional severe weather.
How does metal roofing protect against Riverton's heavy rainfall?
Riverton receives approximately 995 mm of annual rainfall, and metal roofing sheds water faster than any other roofing material because the smooth, hard surface and interlocking panel joints eliminate the absorption issues of asphalt or wood. Water runs off immediately rather than pooling or wicking into substrate layers. The four-way interlocking seams are mechanically sealed—no adhesive that degrades—so water cannot penetrate at panel joints. When installed over a solid deck and underlayment, the system performs identically to asphalt in terms of leak prevention, with none of the degradation asphalt experiences from repeated wet-dry cycles.
What's the hail rating for Interlock metal roofing, and can it help with insurance?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This rating often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because the roof is non-combustible (Class A fire available) and demonstrates superior impact resistance compared to asphalt shingles. Some insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 rated roofs. While Riverton's hail frequency is typical for Maine rather than extreme, the impact durability provides peace of mind and potential long-term savings on your policy.
What warranty does Interlock offer, and how long will a metal roof actually last?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once—the next owner receives 50 years from completion. In practice, aluminum roofs regularly function 40–50+ years because the material itself doesn't age like asphalt (which hardens and becomes brittle) or wood (which splits and rots). The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. This is the last roof most homeowners buy.
Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?
No reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Tile profile (which replicates heavy clay or concrete tile) is approximately 96% lighter than the authentic material. This extraordinary lightness means you can install a metal roof over most existing asphalt, wood, or single-layer roofs without structural upgrades. Many Riverton homes with older framing that couldn't support slate or clay tile can now have that authentic aesthetic without engineering or reinforcement costs. Your existing roof deck and structure simply carry the minimal additional load.
Why choose aluminum metal roofing over steel if both are metal?
Aluminum metal roofing cannot rust because aluminum contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. Instead, aluminum forms a protective oxide layer that heals itself when scratched, continuously defending the underlying metal. This is why Interlock systems install successfully in coastal salt-air environments and remote Antarctic research stations where steel roofing would corrode. Riverton's 995 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw stress would rapidly rust ferrous metals; aluminum remains chemically stable. The two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF coating adds extra corrosion resistance for a 30-year warranty period.
Does metal roofing help cool a home, or is it only for appearance?
Metal roofing reduces cooling energy use when you select energy-efficient colors with high solar reflectance—up to 0.55 on colors like Aged Copper Penny, with thermal emissivity of 0.84. These reflective coatings bounce back heat that asphalt absorbs and stores, measurably lowering air-conditioning demand in warm months. Riverton receives about 3,076 hours of sunshine annually, so reflective metal roofing cuts cooling season demand compared to dark asphalt. The Cool Roof Rating Council rates these products. In winter, aluminum conducts heat, slightly reducing ice dam formation. Energy efficiency is both real and modest; the primary benefit is durability and lifespan, not dramatic utility savings.
How long does installation take, and can you install metal roofing over my existing roof?
Installation timelines depend on roof size and complexity but typically range from 1–3 weeks for residential homes. Yes, Interlock installs over existing asphalt or wood roofs in most cases because the system is so light—the Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles weigh 0.41 and approximately 0.50 lb/sq ft respectively—that structural reinforcement is unnecessary. Your contractor removes only damaged sections and installs over the solid deck. This avoids the expense and landfill impact of a full tear-off. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999 and can assess your specific roof during a site visit to confirm the best approach.
