Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Falmouth Corner

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Falmouth Corner, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Falmouth Corner.

Does metal roofing handle Maine's heavy snow load and ice dams?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively because the smooth, hard surface prevents buildup that traps moisture. Falmouth Corner receives about 130 cm of snow annually with roughly 81 freeze-thaw cycles per year, creating the exact conditions where ice dams form under asphalt. Metal's thermal conductivity helps equalize roof temperature, reducing the freeze-thaw mechanism that spawns dams. The panels are warranted to 120 mph wind resistance, critical when heavy wet snow loads shift during nor'easters. Optional snow guards let you control slide-off safely.

Will freeze-thaw cycling crack or damage an aluminum metal roof in Maine?

No. Aluminum expands and contracts minimally compared to asphalt, wood, or concrete—its coefficient of linear thermal expansion is about 23.6 × 10⁻⁶ per °C, far lower than competing materials. Falmouth Corner experiences roughly 81 freeze-thaw days yearly, a stress that degrades asphalt's binders and splits wood shakes. Aluminum simply doesn't absorb moisture, so ice formation inside the material is impossible. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D2244) remains elastic across temperature swings, and the oxide layer self-heals when scratched—no pathway for water intrusion.

Why does aluminum never rust, and does that matter in Maine's coastal climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes in steel. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer that protects the underlying metal from saltwater and acid rain. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar fluorocarbon coating on both panel sides—extra defense against coastal salt air. This dual-layer approach has proven durable from Atlantic shorelines to Antarctic research stations since 1998. In Falmouth Corner's 1003 mm annual rainfall, a steel roof would rust from the underside outward; aluminum panels simply will not.

Is metal roofing light enough to install over my existing roof without reinforcement?

Yes. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than traditional concrete or clay tile—so no structural work is needed. The Cedar Shingle installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft. This matters in Maine because you avoid expensive beam and truss upgrades that asphalt-to-tile conversions demand. The light weight also means faster installation and lower labor costs. Interlock panels install directly over existing asphalt, felt, or wood shingles (after inspection), eliminating the tear-off, debris hauling, and landfill fees that inflate roofing budgets. Your home's framing remains unchanged.

Can metal roofing withstand Maine's nor'easter and coastal wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Falmouth Corner's typical daily-max winds average about 20 km/h with gusts reaching 129 km/h—well within the panel's rated capacity. The interlocking geometry—each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides—distributes wind load across the entire roof system rather than stressing individual fasteners. This engineering is why Interlock panels have been field-tested on coastal homes from Atlantic salt-air zones to Antarctic bases since 1998. Your roof won't lift, flutter, or leak during the 90+ mph gusts that routinely pound Maine.

What's the hail rating on metal roofing, and can it reduce my insurance cost?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the roof withstands repeated impacts from 2-inch steel balls dropped from 20 feet. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 roofs because claim frequency and severity drop sharply. In Maine's climate with ~3094 annual sunshine hours, hail is less frequent than in the Great Plains, but spring and summer storms do occur—and when they do, a Class 4 roof protects your home and your deductible. Contact your agent to confirm discount eligibility; some carriers save 10–20% on premiums.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal roofing requires far less. Asphalt degrades under UV and thermal cycling, requiring periodic replacement of bald spots and broken seals; wood shakes split, rot, and demand annual treatment in Falmouth Corner's 130 cm annual snow and ~81 freeze-thaw days. Interlock aluminum panels need only routine gutter cleaning and occasional inspection—no sealant reapplication, no granule loss, no moss treatment. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (30-year coating warranty) resists chalking and fading far longer than asphalt binders. You're essentially buying the last roof you'll install, eliminating the recurring labor and material costs that compound over 30+ years.

Is metal roofing worth the higher cost versus asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt but delivers lower lifetime cost. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years; Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years total) means one installation covers your ownership and adds resale value. Over 40 years, you'll replace asphalt twice—labor, hauling, and materials each time—whereas metal installs once. Falmouth Corner's harsh climate (130 cm snow, 81 freeze-thaw cycles, 1003 mm rain annually) accelerates asphalt degradation; metal's durability compounds savings. Plus, current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, erasing the payment shock. Calculate total cost per year, not cost upfront.

Do reflective metal roofs really cut cooling costs in Maine?

Yes, particularly for south- and west-facing roofs. Interlock's energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny profile), meaning they bounce back heat that asphalt absorbs and converts to attic temperature rise. In Falmouth Corner, where mean annual temperature is 8.8°C but summer days frequently reach 25–28°C, reflective roofing noticeably reduces cooling load in June through August. Even at northern latitudes with ~3094 sunshine hours annually, summer solar gain matters—especially in darker roof colors. Metal roofing qualifies for energy-efficiency recognition and Cool Roof Rating Council ratings, potentially unlocking utility rebates or tax credits depending on your state program.
