Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Falmouth Foreside

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Falmouth Foreside, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Falmouth Foreside.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow loads and ice dams?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively because the smooth, hard surface resists adhesion and ice-dam formation that plagues asphalt. Falmouth Foreside receives about 130 cm of snow annually across roughly 81 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that break down asphalt but leave aluminum unaffected. The panels' ultralight construction (the Slate weighs only 0.41 lb/sq ft) means zero structural reinforcement is needed, and snow slides cleanly rather than collecting. Optional snow guards can be installed for areas where controlled sliding matters. The aluminum oxide layer doesn't degrade from repeated freezing, thawing, and salt exposure the way organic roofing materials do.

Will freeze-thaw cycling damage my metal roof over time?

No—aluminum's material properties make it exceptionally durable through freeze-thaw cycles. Unlike asphalt shingles, which harden and crack when temperatures swing, or wood shakes, which split, aluminum alloy (ASTM B209, 3105-H24) simply contracts and expands elastically without permanent damage. Falmouth Foreside experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days yearly, plus roughly 1003 mm of annual rainfall that infiltrates microcracks in traditional roofing. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214), adds a protective barrier. The Guardian warranty specifically covers cracking, splitting, and loss of impact resistance—conditions that freeze-thaw causes in other materials but not in aluminum.

Why won't my aluminum roof rust in Maine's coastal and salty climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, transparent oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath and self-heals when scratched. Interlock applies Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish to both sides of every panel, adding salt-air durability far beyond the base alloy's natural protection. This dual-layer defense is why Interlock roofs perform in Antarctic research stations and coastal salt-air homes globally since 1998. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires constant coating maintenance to prevent rust perforation. The Guardian warranty explicitly covers rusting—a non-issue for aluminum but a primary failure mode for steel in Maine's 1003 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw environment.

Can a metal roof withstand Maine's winter and coastal wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking panel system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Falmouth Foreside's typical wind gusts reach 129 km/h, placing local storms within the rated envelope. The four-way interlock (side-to-side and top-to-bottom locking seams) distributes wind load across the entire roof plane rather than relying on fasteners alone. This design earned ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025) and withstands the gusting that tears seams in single-lock or fastener-dependent roofing. Asphalt shingles often lift and tear at lower wind speeds because they depend on adhesive and fastener count; interlocked metal panels move as a unified membrane.

Does a metal roof handle hail better than asphalt, and could it lower insurance costs?

Interlock metal roofing achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This resilience often interests insurers because Class 4 impact resistance directly reduces claim frequency compared to asphalt shingles, which dent, puncture, and lose granules in hail. Many homeowners have reported insurance discounts for installing impact-rated metal roofing; check with your carrier for specifics. Asphalt typically rates Class 3 at best. Falmouth Foreside's 3094 annual sunshine hours and frequent weather pattern changes mean hail risk is always possible in Maine springs. A non-penetrating roof eliminates that damage class entirely, potentially offsetting installation costs through premium reductions over the roof's lifetime.

How much maintenance does an aluminum metal roof really need?

Interlock metal roofing requires minimal maintenance—no granule replacement, no re-sealing, no moss or algae treatment, and no structural repairs from rot or decay. The smooth aluminum surface sheds debris automatically, and the two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against chalking) resists weathering far longer than asphalt's 15-25 year effective lifespan. In Falmouth Foreside's high-rainfall (1003 mm annually) and freeze-thaw environment (81 days/year), wood shakes split and asphalt deteriorates; aluminum simply endures. Occasional gutter cleaning and inspection after major storms is all most homeowners do. CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, Interlock eliminates the ladder work and expense that traditional roofing demands every 5-10 years.

Can I install a metal roof over my existing roof without reinforcing the house structure?

Yes—aluminum's ultralight weight eliminates the need for any structural reinforcement. The Mediterranean Tile profile, for example, weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft (about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile) and installs directly over most existing asphalt roofs. Falmouth Foreside homes often have standard residential framing designed for asphalt shingles; Interlock's aluminum panels add negligible load—far less than slate or tile would require. This saves thousands in structural engineering and construction costs. The Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, making retrofit installations faster and simpler. Because the aluminum doesn't require reinforcement, the roof can often be installed in a single day, and the existing shingles can stay in place underneath, adding insulation and sound dampening without structural consequence.

What is the timeline and installation process for a metal roof in Maine?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999 and handles most residential installations in one to three days, depending on roof size and complexity. The process begins with inspection and measurement, followed by fastening the interlocking panels directly to the existing roof deck (no structural prep needed due to aluminum's light weight). If you choose to remove the old roof, that adds time, but many homeowners opt to leave asphalt shingles underneath for insulation and sound absorption. The four-way interlocking system means each panel locks firmly to the next, creating a weather-sealed membrane. No special tools or expertise are required from the homeowner. Current financing available: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation—making the project manageable even in Maine's busy spring season.

What warranty does Interlock offer, and how long will my roof actually last?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—meaning no percentage reduction in coverage as time passes. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance without the wear-and-tear clauses typical of other roofing warranties. The warranty is transferable once, giving the next owner 50 years of protection from completion, which builds significant resale value. Most asphalt roofs require full replacement every 15-25 years; Interlock's aluminum, given Falmouth Foreside's 1003 mm annual rainfall and 81 freeze-thaw cycles, typically outlasts multiple asphalt cycles. With the Alunar coating warranted 30 years against fading and chalking (ASTM D4214/D2244), you're buying the final roof for your home—not a temporary solution.

Is aluminum roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes—Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, and when a roof reaches end-of-life, the material returns to the aluminum supply chain instead of a landfill. Traditional asphalt shingles, by contrast, typically end up in landfills after 15-25 years and take decades to break down. Over a 50-year period in Falmouth Foreside's harsh 1003 mm rainfall and 81 freeze-thaw day climate, a homeowner might replace asphalt three times—generating three roofing waste streams. A single Interlock installation avoids that cycle entirely. The lightweight aluminum (0.41-0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile) requires minimal manufacturing energy compared to slate or tile, and the two-sided Alunar coating protects against weathering, extending service life further. At end-of-life, the roof can be melted down and reformed, closing the loop instead of perpetuating the linear take-make-dispose model.
