This letter is being written to commend two of your Installers (Alex & Tim). It is our feeling that they have worked diligently through all sorts of weather conditions to complete a large and difficult roofing job. In spite of hot, humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s, they have worked to strip the old shingles, install the plywood and new shingles. They have also worked through cool rainy and misty days. For some unknown reason the dumpster was hauled away after their working hours. If my husband hadn't been home to retrieve all their tools, wheelbarrows, harnesses, etc., the tools would have disappeared as well. The men had to finish stripping the old shingles off our porch roof and haul them away in their own personal vehicle. Please be sure to extend our appreciation and satisfaction to your installers for a job well done. They are extremely polite and pleasant young men. It was a joy having them at our house. If only all outside contractors had such devoted and skilled employees. They did a wonderful job at our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chebeague Island

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Chebeague Island, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Chebeague Island.

How does a metal roof handle Chebeague Island's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far better than asphalt shingles, which trap moisture and ice dams. Chebeague receives about 130 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 81 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt but leave aluminum unaffected. The panels won't split, curl, or lose integrity through repeated freezing; the four-way interlocking design plus snow guards (installed on request) prevent slides. You'll see snow slide off naturally rather than building up, reducing weight stress and ice-dam problems.

Why isn't rust a concern on Chebeague Island where salt air is constant?

Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust—period. Your roof will never corrode into failure the way steel roofing can in coastal salt air. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that self-heals if scratched during installation or storms. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, giving extra defense against salt spray. That dual-side coating carries a 30-year warranty against fading and chalking, so salt exposure won't degrade appearance or protection.

Will metal roofing stay secure during Chebeague Island's coastal wind gusts?

Yes—the four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph, well above the typical gusts of about 129 km/h you experience here. Each panel locks mechanically to its neighbors on all four sides, so there's no single point of failure. The system is engineered to ICC-ES ESR-1790 code and performs even in severe Atlantic storms. Because the panels are lighter than traditional materials (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft), wind uplift forces are dramatically reduced. Installation to specification ensures fasteners and sealing remain secure through decades of coastal wind exposure.

Can my older Chebeague home's framing support a metal roof, or do I need reinforcement?

Almost no homes need structural reinforcement. Interlock's Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft and Shake about 0.58 lb/sq ft—lighter than the asphalt already on most roofs. Even the Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates heavy clay tile, weighs around 0.59 lb/sq ft because aluminum is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. You can install over your existing roof, saving tear-off costs and disposal. A structural engineer can assess your specific home in minutes, but the vast majority of island homes—especially those originally built for slate or wood shake—easily support Interlock without added framing or reinforcement.

How does aluminum hold up to 80+ freeze-thaw cycles per year on this island?

Aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw climates because it doesn't absorb water or expand when frozen. Asphalt and wood shakes absorb moisture, expand in freeze cycles, crack, and fail—you'll see this pattern clearly over Chebeague's roughly 81 annual freeze-thaw days. Aluminum is dimensionally stable; it won't cup, curl, or split under repeated temperature swings. The Alunar coating resists salt-laden moisture during thaw cycles, and the four-way interlock prevents water from penetrating panel seams. The result is a roof whose performance actually improves relative to traditional materials the longer your winters last.

Does heavy rain penetrate metal roofing, or is it truly watertight?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed water by design—panels overlap and lock on all four edges, so water cannot flow uphill into seams. Chebeague receives about 1003 mm of rain annually, distributed across roughly 130 rain days. Solid deck installation with underlayment (standard practice) adds a water-tight secondary barrier identical to what asphalt shingles expect. The metal surface itself is non-porous; water runs off immediately rather than soaking in. When installed to spec by a qualified contractor like Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., the system is engineered to handle the rainfall and salt spray your island sees without leaks.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost over the life of the roof?

Metal roofing is the last roof you'll buy. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years; Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner) means you'll never replace it again. Over 50 years, you'll buy asphalt three times—each requiring tear-off, disposal, and labor—versus zero additional replacements. The Guardian Warranty is transferable too, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage, which boosts resale value. Current financing offers zero payments and zero interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation, which shifts the cost question in your favor. Add in zero maintenance versus periodic asphalt repairs, and the total cost of ownership favors metal from year 20 onward.

Will hail damage my metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?

Interlock aluminum roofing carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Aluminum's hardness and the panel geometry dissipate impact energy far more effectively than asphalt or wood shakes, which dent, crack, or split. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts on Class 4 metal roofs. While Chebeague Island doesn't face severe hail regularly, the protection is built in at no extra cost. Contact your insurance agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ESR-1790 code compliance to inquire about available discounts.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes—aluminum is about 95% recyclable, and Interlock panels end the asphalt shingle cycle. A typical asphalt replacement generates tons of torn-off shingles destined for landfill, where they remain for decades. Aluminum, by contrast, retains its value; old panels are melted down and reused indefinitely without degradation. Over Chebeague's typical 50-year home lifespan, you'll avoid three asphalt tear-offs (roughly 9+ tons of waste) by choosing metal once. The lighter weight also reduces transportation energy and installation labor. If environmental impact matters to your decision, metal roofing is the choice that aligns your home maintenance with your values.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing on Chebeague Island, and how long does it take?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999, so they understand Atlantic coastal conditions, salt air, and island logistics intimately. Installation timelines depend on roof size and weather, but metal panels install faster than asphalt because there's no nailing row by row—panels interlock mechanically. Most residential projects complete within 3–5 working days. The local team can assess your existing roof in-person, discuss design options (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, Mediterranean Tile profiles), and arrange financing (current offer: zero interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off). Call for a free evaluation and timeline estimate.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Chebeague Island’s climate?

Yes. Chebeague Island averages about 130 cm of snow, 1003 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 129 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
