What our customers are saying:

★★★★★
Review: June 22, 2005 Completion: June 23, 2005

This letter is being written to commend two of your Installers (Alex & Tim). It is our feeling that they have worked diligently through all sorts of weather conditions to complete a large and difficult roofing job. In spite of hot, humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s, they have worked to strip the old shingles, install the plywood and new shingles. They have also worked through cool rainy and misty days. For some unknown reason the dumpster was hauled away after their working hours. If my husband hadn't been home to retrieve all their tools, wheelbarrows, harnesses, etc., the tools would have disappeared as well. The men had to finish stripping the old shingles off our porch roof and haul them away in their own personal vehicle. Please be sure to extend our appreciation and satisfaction to your installers for a job well done. They are extremely polite and pleasant young men. It was a joy having them at our house. If only all outside contractors had such devoted and skilled employees. They did a wonderful job at our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Freeport

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Freeport, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Freeport.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow loads?

Interlock's aluminum panels shed snow and ice efficiently because they're smooth, non-absorbent, and installed over a solid deck with underlayment—preventing the ice dams that form on asphalt shingles. Freeport receives about 130 cm of snow annually across roughly 86 freeze-thaw cycles per year. The four-way interlocking design and metal's thermal conductivity work together to minimize ice buildup. Optional snow guards are available if you want to control slide-off for safety. The light weight (Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your home's structure bears far less load than slate or clay tile would—no reinforcement required.

Will freeze-thaw cycling in Maine damage aluminum metal roofing?

No. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the material itself cannot rust or rot—the two primary failure modes in freeze-thaw environments. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) expands and contracts with temperature swings, but the four-way interlocking design accommodates that movement without cracking or splitting. Freeport's 86 annual freeze-thaw days and 130 cm of snow pose no structural threat to aluminum, whereas wood shakes absorb moisture and split, and asphalt becomes brittle. The Alunar® 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) protects against the salt-air corrosion that coastal Maine experiences year-round.

Can an aluminum metal roof rust in coastal Maine?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a thin, self-repairing oxide layer that protects the metal beneath—even when scratched or exposed to Freeport's salt air and rainfall of about 1022 mm per year. This is why Interlock has installed roofs from coastal homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998. The Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides of every panel) adds a second protective barrier, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. Steel roofing, by contrast, rusts when the protective coating is compromised. For Maine's corrosive coastal environment, aluminum's chemistry simply outperforms steel.

Does a metal roof stay secure in Maine's coastal wind?

Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Freeport's typical gusts reach about 129 km/h, well within that range. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than concentrating stress on fasteners. This engineering—combined with proper fastening to the solid deck below—is why metal roofs outperform asphalt in high-wind zones. The ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) documents compliance with IBC/IRC wind standards. Homeowners often see lower insurance premiums after installing wind-rated metal roofing in coastal areas.

What's the hail rating on Interlock metal roofing, and will it lower my insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact rating available—meaning it withstands hailstones up to 1.5 inches without perforating. The warranty covers perforation from hail within that range, so your roof is protected where it counts most. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofs; contact your agent to confirm your policy's specifics. Freeport's climate rarely sees severe hail, but the rating reflects the material's toughness against all impact. Asphalt shingles typically achieve Class 2 or 3, meaning they fail at smaller hail sizes. If you've had claims or live in a hail-prone corridor, metal's Class 4 rating becomes both a financial and peace-of-mind advantage.

Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?

No. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, and Shake profiles weigh 0.41 to 0.58 lb/sq ft—so light that no structural reinforcement is needed on any home built to code. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than a concrete or clay tile roof. Because most homes are already framed to carry asphalt shingles (which weigh ~2 to 3 lb/sq ft), Interlock can often install directly over your existing roof, eliminating tear-off labor and landfill costs. This is especially valuable in Maine's older stock and in homes where structural upgrades would be expensive. Your installer will verify the existing deck's condition, but weight is rarely the limiting factor.

What warranty does Interlock offer, and how long will the roof actually last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once to the next owner with 50 years of coverage from completion date. Because aluminum cannot rust and the Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking, the roof's active lifespan exceeds most asphalt shingles (15–20 years) and rivals slate or tile while being far lighter and lower-maintenance. Freeport's 3085 annual sunshine hours and 130 cm of snow do degrade other materials, but aluminum's chemistry and the non-prorated guarantee mean you're buying durability backed by certainty, not hope.

Will an Interlock metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes. energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect significantly more solar heat than asphalt absorbs, with initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84. This Cool Roof Rating Council certification means less heat transfer into your attic and living spaces, reducing air-conditioning load on warmer days. Freeport's ~3085 annual sunshine hours make this benefit tangible year-round. The reflective coating also keeps the roof surface cooler, reducing thermal stress that can age roofing materials. While Maine's winters are the dominant energy factor, reflective roofing helps offset cooling costs in late spring and early fall, lowering total HVAC runtime. A 10% off promotion is currently available—worth comparing against a standard dark asphalt roof's heat absorption over 25+ years.

Is a metal roof more cost-effective than asphalt over its lifetime?

Yes, when you factor in lifespan, maintenance, and replacement cycles. Asphalt shingles cost less upfront but need replacing every 15–20 years, meaning two to three tear-offs, disposal fees, and reinstallation labor over a 50-year period. Interlock's non-prorated lifetime warranty and proven durability in Maine's 86 annual freeze-thaw days and 1022 mm of rainfall mean you likely replace it once, or never. No algae growth, no missing shingles from wind, no granule loss to gutters. Energy savings on qualifying colors further offset the initial premium. Current financing (no payments, no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation) makes the entry cost competitive. The math favors metal when you own the home for 15+ years.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Freeport, Maine?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served Cumberland County and the region since 1999, bringing 25+ years of Maine-specific installation experience. They're familiar with coastal salt-air conditions, heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw durability requirements, and local building codes. They can also discuss current promotions and coordinate with your insurance or financing. Reach out directly for a site assessment and timeline—Freeport's location makes scheduling straightforward, and local expertise ensures your roof is installed to the ICC-ES ESR-1790 standard.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Freeport’s climate?

Yes. Freeport averages about 130 cm of snow, 1022 mm of rain, roughly 86 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 129 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
